Adidas SolarBoost 19 - First Run

Today I'm taking a look at the Adidas SolarBoost. It's my first time running at an Adidas daily trainer. And while it's a neutral shoe that is going to work well for a lot of runners in a lot of different situations, I find that I like it more for easier runs or longer runs. There are some guide rails along each side of the foot and an ample heel cup that keep the foot right where Adidas intends. I think this will be most enjoyable for those of you out there who don't need a stability shoe but might want a little bit more structure or support than bootie or socklike uppers might provide.
Also, because of those guide rails, I think this shoe will do quite well at the gym where you might be mixing it up between the treadmill, weights, and/or a group fitness class.
Overall, I felt like the shoe provided a nice amount of guidance without getting too assertive. I could feel what it was trying to do, but I didn't feel like it was fighting me. I took this shoe out for a recovery run (I might have been going a little fast for this to be a true recovery run though), and I enjoyed the cushion both in the midsole and around the heel, ankle, and top of the foot.
The only real complaint I have about the shoe is that there is a lot of boost, but I can't really feel it. The cushioning feels good, and I do feel cushioning in the midsole. It's just not that signature Boost sensation that I was hoping for. And if I did get more of that Boost feeling, I'd probably forgive that it does feel a tiny bit heavy.

The point that I feel you're missing is the amazing versality of the Solar Boost. I've got an extensive collection (Peg Turbo, VF 4%, Boost Tempo, Ultra Boost ST, Glide Trail), but the Solar Boost has been my goto shoe for the last 18 months. It is an universal shoe that does it all for me: everyday trainer, tempo, long, marathon, light trails. It's not the lightest, not the flashiest, not the fastest, but it's very solid shoe with exceptional durability (got 1000km out of my first pair). I have to admit that it took me some time to understand this shoe, but I now consider the Solar Boost as a massively underrated shoe.

Got these, and the Solar Glide. Returned both and went for the Rincon, which I put 70k on in the last 7 days, Amazing shoe but the midsole shows quite some wear and tear now. Both Solar shoes (didn't try the "budget" Drive, it doesn't have a Torsion shank which biomechanically is a no-go when it comes to a material like Boost) are quite narrow, with the Boost being even narrower than the Glide. What put me off the most was the abundance of Boost in the heel, which makes the forefoot seem quite hard in contrast. That and those Solar rails who dug into the medial side of my forefoot so hard that I finished a 10k easy run and my left foot felt like after a HM. Funny how the Adios and Boston are the only Adidas shoes left that have that signature Boost ride despite their low stacks of it. Supernova Glide 8 (I think it came out in 2016, and to date is the highest rated shoe on solereview) was the last proper running shoe in the Supernova, now Solar lineup.

Got them for 2 months at a good price and because SB 3 are heavier than this, and the review is right about Boost, if you're around 154 Ibs you just don't feel it while running, it's just too dense for me.

I purchased these shoes today along with the solar drive st. I've been using a pair of solar drive or glide st🤔 that I picked up last month on sale and am closing in on 200miles. I plan on using them for daily training and maybe races depending on how I like them. Got 2pairs of shoes a running tee and socks for $160 so either way I'm happy.

Remove the insoles and stuff it with newspaper. Your shoes shouldn't be wet from sweat (except for the insole), consider different socks or models with more breathable uppers. I am a very heavy sweater, and am drenched after any type of running, yet my shoes are bone dry.

This 2.0 version of the Solar Boost should not be as hot as the 1.0 version that had some kind of rubberized mesh thing that no air would come in or out of the shoe. That was probably a good shoe for winter time to compete with Nike Shield. Kkkkk.

I want to try UB19 but I'm afraid of the upper since the pureboost2017 and p.boostGO didn't work very well for me, they had very good midsole and traction but the upper is terrible in the pureboosts line. Since you have have used them, Is the upper of UB19 good like the upper of epic react or NB 1080v9?

i ran in the UB4.0 last year. i spend all of last year arguing with people that it is a legit running shoe. i got tired of arguing. i decided to pass on UB19. but after trying this and the boston 8, i think i might just have to.

kofuzi We just do our running and give frank opinions based on the shoes we run in. Each of us have different foot type and history of injuries etc hence what suits us might not suits others. Ignore those haters, no need to argue with them. What matter most is we enjoy running, regardless of the shoes we wear. Cheers! 🍻

Giacomo Ultraboost 19 is among the shoes I ran in. I love the upper; thin, comfortable, conforming and enough support. It is definitely better than flyknit. The midsole is firmer than normal Ultraboost (which is too mushy for my liking) and definitely I can feel the energy return. The only downside about the shoes is the weight, especially when you compare to its competitors. I never run in pureboost before so no comments.
@ryanyap8859
@ryanyap8859 5 лет назад
Giacomo On the subject of upper, just to add on, primeknit 360 of Ultraboost 19 is more structured and snug than normal primeknit which is more stretchy. Nike’s flyknit is also comfortable but has a rougher feel. The upper of NB 1080v9 is very plush and smooth, very comfortable for easy run. NB Zante Pursuit’s upper is sock like and very stretchy. All are great upper but overall primeknit 360 is the best in my opinion. I have yet to try the NB fuel cell rebel which also has a one piece upper.

Your description confirmed my quick impressions comparing the Solar Boost against the Adizero Prime. The Adizero felt more like a racy shoe, a bit lighter, thinner sole/heel, more breathable and flexible mesh fabric upper without a separate "tongue" -- but my foot felt a bit unsupported. The Solar Boost felt more like what I wanted, moving toward a pavement running shoe from my usual trail/gravel running shoes.

I just took them out of the box for a first try. I completely agree with your thoughts on them. Whereas the solarglide (19) feels light and soft, the Solarboost (19) seems heavier/ clunkier. Not the properties I am looking for! 🙋‍♂️

I have all the models of ub my favorite is the 3.0 but it’s for casual wear as far as working out I’d have to say the 4.0 is best does run a little hot not going to lie but it’s not as tight as the 1.0 and 2.0 but keeps you on the boost bed where as the 3.0 you can slide off The boost but still my favorite pair to wear outside of working out the 19 does the vest lockdown like crazy lockdown but with awesome comfort for sure I’d like to see your take on them God bless great video as always

I like the Solar Boost, since it is a few tenths of an ounce lighter, that said I like the tongue of the Solar Glide more. Mostly using these as my daily trainers. Have gotten a few 13.1 miles on them, but I prefer something with more cushion for it. Considering adding the Boston for track work.

@@kofuzi The Solar Boost is 9.4 oz for a size 9.5. Solar Glide is 9.9 oz for a 9.5. The Solar Boost has an adjustable tongue .The Solar Glide has the tongue sleeve (which I am not a big fan of, took me a while for it to feel comfortable). The Solar Boost apparently has torsion strips in the forefoot. That said overall I give the edge to the Solar Glide, it feels lighter and quicker for me. but all i have now is questions... how often do you run? what surfaces do you run? what races are you training for, if any? are they all the same color? are they all SB19? or are some of them last years? do you know the difference between solar boost and solar glide? what other shoes have you run in before? do you normally buy a variety of shoes? or are these so good that you bought multiple despite a tendency to have variety?

do you know how the solar drive is different?
@kofuzi

I'm afraid I don't. It looks a lot like last year's solar boost with that upper though

The Drive is supposed to be the budget model coming down from Solar Boost > Solar Glide > Solar Drive. As such it misses a few details Adidas puts in their premium priced shoes, like a Torsion shank, which is indispensable if you want to run in these. Without it the boost foam is displaced on each strike as a consequence of the shearing movement ocurring upon foot strike. If you ever ran in any of the Pure Boosts you know what I mean, They are not meant for running. Unless you crawl along at 8:30 pace or slower, without a Torsion shank Boost is not a stable enough platform to run on. Sure they have a layer of EVA on top the Boost and those rails in place, all to retain Boost in its shape but the Torsion shank is maybe the most important piece of the puzzle in how to make Boost "ridable".

@Luke Ng From my opinion latest solar drive 19 difference with its brother are boost volume a little bit low than glide and solarboost. 2nd, in solar drive, under the insole, there is no direct contact with boost like UB, solarboost or solar glide. Thus, the ride is firmer than its brother.

nice review. i'm a lifter and my opinion is no running styled shoe is for the gym.

fair enough. i think that no cross trainer is suitable for running.

Try the ultraboost 19

I've been avoiding it so far this year, but I think it might be time

Shoe is so underrated. I know so much people that use it for half and full marathons. I actually like it better than the Pegasus turbo 2. It’s a consistent shoe.

Wow. That shoe is so reminiscent to me of the supernova....minus the Midfoot cage...but I thought they were pretty heavy and clunky. I need more cushion under the forefoot and Adidas seem to be too thin in that department for me. Hoka Rincon or even the Clifton 6 fit the bill for recovery and more peppy runs for me. snappy haircut.

i loved the Adios 4. but it's a shoe that isn't always the most lovable
@phl0w666
@phl0w666 5 лет назад
Second that, try the Adios 3 or 4. If you're lean and on the light side (sub 150lbs/70kg) it's an amazing do-it-all shoe. Be it easy daily runs, long runs, tempos, intervals, and of course races, it does it all. It's a shoe that demands proper form but at the same time kinda guides you through your stride, it's like being on rails.

I got the same feeling. It has a lot boost in midsole but I can't feel it or I'll say boost can't make me excited anymore (like the exciting feeling that Energy Boost model gave to me) Also the upper is too warm for summer running :)

Looks like my supernova I bought almost 2 years ago. The supernova was quite heavy though.

i'm not sure why, and unless i'm missing something, it seems like they just keep slighlty modifying the shoe and the name, which makes this segment of their lineup difficult to understand
