Adire is the distinctive fabric tradition of West Africa and specifically of Yoruba women - with its dyeing techniques dating back centuries. But this special fabric is under threat from cheap international copies - prompting one state in Nigeria to call for an all out ban on imports from countries like China. One Governor has even directed that all public servants should wear Adire once a week to promote its cultural significance. Ronke Phillips-Pakenham travelled to the city where it’s said to have originated from, to learn about its enduring appeal and the fight to preserve the craft.
