Adire is the distinctive fabric tradition of West Africa and specifically of Yoruba women - with its dyeing techniques dating back centuries. But this special fabric is under threat from cheap international copies - prompting one state in Nigeria to call for an all out ban on imports from countries like China. One Governor has even directed that all public servants should wear Adire once a week to promote its cultural significance. Ronke Phillips-Pakenham travelled to the city where it’s said to have originated from, to learn about its enduring appeal and the fight to preserve the craft. Exactly! As a Ghanaian raised by PanAfricanists, I’ve always upheld this secret by creating the Adire Fabric awareness, whenever Asians are accredited for its crafting and creation.

The government should make laws that ban textiles not processed in the Adire way from being called or advertised as "Adire". It should have a CLEARLY stated different name and anyone importing, selling these fakes as "Adire" should be fined thousands of dollars/millions of naira. Good source of revenue for government. That is the same way European nations protect their special brand industries like Parmesan Cheese, Cornish Pasty, Champagne, Cinta Senese, Carne Arouquesa, Jersey Royal Potatoes, Buxton Blue, Gorgonzola, Asiago cheese, and Capocollo di Calabria. You can't make a drink anywhere else apart from the Champagne region of France and call it Champagne, and they would allow you to sell it in Europe.

the problems are often tracing back to federal gov, even when state gov is willing to make change in nigeria it all comes down to who is elected, if only the system was truly democractic

No, please...this is misleading. Nigeria has 371 ethnic groups; Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba are the largest ethnic groups. Now, Adire is the cultural fabric of the Yorubas. The Hausas have theirs, as well as the Igbos. Please, while trying to educate people, stick to facts.
