I got a new wrench for the arsenal, and I give my thought on the Knipex pliers wrenches. I guess I’m just old school when it comes to tools.

you must be doing something wrong with the plier wrenches, i stand on the back of my 10" set maybe once a month to pop a fastener loose and they always stay locked on. they never slip out of adjustment, they will crush a fitting before rounding it off, they squeeze so hard that if your alignment is off a little the fastener is turned straight inside the jaws. I have had cases in the past where using them on too small of a bolt head will prevent the self tightening action, but those are so small that 10" is overkill anyway. only thing an adjustable wrench is good for is an impromptu hammer in comparison
@realworldtoolreviews
@realworldtoolreviews 2 года назад
They definitely squeeze hard. I’ve actually used them for bending metal straight a lot. I know you can stand on them and lock them on to a fastener, but they have popped off on me in awkward spots where an adjustable wrench has not. They work well a lot of the time, but my adjustable wrenches work every time. That’s why I like them better. Thanks for watching!

I've had them slip off plenty of times. I'd never trust standing on it but I wouldn't hesitate to stand on my adjustable. Good quality adjustable wrenches are far better. Get a little grit or dirt in the pliers wrench and you're having a bad day. They also don't make great hammers...adjustable do. Sure they are old tech...there's a reason for that.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. LOL No matter how wrong. It all depends on the angle. Lots of plumbing is straight in access. The knipex are not designed for that. Knipex are awesome. And the jaws have a smaller profile than same adjustable and get on your gas fittings. But you gotta have space for it. I hate old style adjustable ones, I just keep trying wrenches till I find the one that fits if no room to get the knipex in. The basin wrench is usually my go to for plumbing in tight spots. If you can’t see it I’m not too worried about the finish Agree on the pricey comment though
@realworldtoolreviews
@realworldtoolreviews 2 года назад
They are very well made tools. I think it really depends on what you do. I have used them for gas fittings before, but like you said, you have to have room for them. My main gripe with them is that you really have to hold the handles together in a lot of situations, and that is aggravating to me when I’m reaching somewhere in a crawl space and I’m back holding with another wrench in the other hand. With my good quality adjustables, I can get them on the fitting and not worry about it. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
@raphealwood4434

You must work new construction. Cuz as a service plumber we hardly ever have enough room.. because you pretty much said that they are situational. Meaning they're not a replacement they're just more of a good idea and will save you on occasion. So a solid big adjustable wrench for that s*** that it just can't do. And then the two small ones you take care of your normal easier fasteners. Now as far as gas pipe I don't know the ones you're working on. But normally we have to take a big ass monkey wrench to it. Like I said I guess if it's brand new and you ain't got to do all that. But when you're having to break loose something that's been there for I don't know They say 10 years yeah you need something with a little bit more leverage!

I collect Adjustable wrenches made by Western Forge, specifically for Craftsman USA, Proto and Mac though they had made for others. 18" is my favorite size to use. But I do love the Knipex pliers wrenches as well. The largest Knipex opens so much larger and it has the positive grip its almost like having a small narrow vice in your hand. Specifically I was pressure testing some -24 hydraulic hoses and my 18" doesn't open enough for the nut but it does open enough for the plug so I was using the knipex on the fitting nut because the vice is mounted on the other side of the shop from the tester. I recommend having 2 of every size adjustable and plier. Anyways I'm rambling, but I don't think theres a reason to not have both styles.

I'll have to try the Milwaukee. I didn't know they made them. I do have DeWalt 10" and they are 'tight' and my go to for medium work as I don't have to retighten them once adjusted initially (not sloppy at all). I never looked to see if there were smaller of the same, but I have thought I'd use them if so. They are metal with no inserts at the handle but they have a matt-like finish which is easy to grip. I'm not a fan of chrome as I don't like the slippery factor, especially if they get wet and yet that is what protects them from rust. I'd rather have the grip when using a wrench.

I am a Knipex fan-boy, but I don't really like the pliers-wrench. I try. Really I try... but I keep reaching for my Milwaukee adjustable - the best adjustable I have ever used. I don't have a problem with the pliers-wrench slipping, I just find it annoying to adjust to size. I don't find adjusting the Cobras (which I love) to be annoying, but there really isn't anything else out there - water-pump pliers are always annoying to adjust (unless they are automatic, but those really really desperately suck) but for smooth jaws, when I have an alternative that is so easy to use one-handed (the Milwaukee adjustable) I just keep reaching for that. By the way... I'm a millwright and I'm the wrong guy to try to impress with a 'big wrench'. I have a set of adjustable wrenches that go up through 12" to 15" to 18" (like yours) to 24". I use my 24" adjustable regularly. I know they make larger ones (up to 36", that I have seen in catalogues) but I have never personally seen a larger one. Don't get me started on my pipe wrenches. Love the Milwaukee Cheater, though.

You’re wrong about the cost argument: it’s the cost of one e.g. 180mm pliers wrench vs multiple high quality adjustable wrenches sized 8” or 10” and smaller. Because the jaws on the pliers wrench have such a big range, each one replaces several adjustable wrenches. You can put a pipe over the pliers wrench handle too. The nut or bolt will round off before the pliers wrench breaks.

Crescent was bought out by a Chinese company. The Crestoly alloy they claim their wrenches were made of is gone. The quality is not there anymore. It's a zombie brand. A Chinese company is parading around in Crescent's skin to take advantage of it's established reputation with consumers like so many brands these days. Milwaukee included. I know this because I grew up with American made Milwuakee, and I have purchased, used, and own some TTI made Milwuakee products. Are all their tools bad? No, obviously they get the job done. Certain products have suffered reductions in overall quality compared to what I have enjoyed with the previous owner's products. Do your research before you buy a tool. Read reviews and examine it yourself in person if you can. The Knipex plier wrench is great and I need more substantial proof than personal preference. The video just proves to me that you prefer adjustable wrenches. They are familiar and you are more efficient in your use with familiar tools. To make a more compelling argument. You need to demonstrate how the Knipex pliers are "failing" to meet your needs. Also demonstrate how the adjustable wrench is the superior option to use in your situations.
