Just because it's shaped like Knipex does not mean that the metallurgy is anything like knipex. This includes the chrome on the finish.

Icon is designed here USA and made in Taiwan. The warranty exchange is better if ever needed. The newer design Icon piler wrench is good enough for my needs. I try not to pay extreme prices for big brand name imported plier wrenches. I did purchase the 7 1/2" brand name no one else makes one. If you own a business or are a professional purchase the big brand if your career depends on them. Check with a tax professional. Some items can probably be considered a business expense.

I have both the Knipex and Icons. Knipex now stay at home in my nice tools collection and the Icons go on the work truck where they have a higher chance of walking away. I use the tools daily. For what it’s worth, a pair of Knipex, the lower jaw exploded into pieces on me. Menards swapped them out for me no issue.

The Icon isn’t bad at all. So far, I haven’t had any issue outside the Pittsburgh line with the metallurgy (literally the metal just snapping under minimal load - not frequent but it happens).. the one thing with this specific wrench, and the positive is the grip is the best, but the price is so close to the real thing. For less than $7 more I replaced mine with the name brand on Amazon. It’s a heavier tool than the gen 2 knipex either of weight matters as it’s a decent difference. .. my point is the argument isn’t as solid as the slip joint pliers vs the snap on for nearly $60 (list of course, as you can get it for even closer in price off the truck). This is not scientifically tested, but I do question the 10-1 that knipex advertises if the the icon meets that standard. It’s a minor issue but as you move the handle you aren’t constantly moving the jaws with the icon. There’s a small amount at the apex.. something you’d never notice without using the things side by side I’d bet.. but if the knipex dose offer a higher leverage “bite” that’s worth noting. At least from a design perspective it’s a minor advantage to the knipex.. it’s like gen 2 was run through its paces to see exactly where they could lower the weight and maintain the strength. Thanks for the close up of the different icon versions. Mine is like the second model.
@thingsmen
@thingsmen 8 месяцев назад
Appreciate the feedback. I do notice some differences between Knipex and Icon. Like you mentioned Knipex appears to have found small ways to improve design, weight, and functionality. I haven’t performed a direct side by side of those two pliers but will be very soon. Please consider sticking a round and subscribing to see the results.

Icon does what Icon does: they make tools that look like Knipex, hopefully work almost as well as Knipex, and cost much less. I’ve put the Knipex and its Icon knockoff side by side, and they look the same and work pretty much the same. Push their limits, and you will want the Knipex. But you must admit, HF knows marketing.🙄

The icon is nice. It is not as good as the knipex The jaws don’t open quite as much at each position You can’t get a 1/2 inch pipe over the icon handle like the knipex for the extra leverage The knipex are just a little slimmer Same can be said for the Knipex water pump pliers and the Doyle knock offs, decent pliers. Not as good as the knipex HF has some decent good value tools in Icon, Doyle, Quinn, PittsburghPro lines. The Pittsburgh line is mostly junk
