This is a SHORT format video of the full video where I recently upgraded the factory carburetor to this Edelbrock 1406 unit, now I need to adjust the idle mixture screws, and I show you how to make the idle happy using a vacuum gauge.

If you're adjusting these idle mixture screws with a vacuum gauge and the vacuum gauge doesn't move no matter how much you turn the screw in or out, then your curb idle screw is too far in allowing too much of the transfer slots to be exposed, anytime you adjust your idle mixtures screws you also have to adjust your curb idle screw. Just a tip for whoever

Thanks for pointing that out and saving me the effort. Too many times I see people who complain that they can't (or just don't know how it works) get their carb adjusted correctly. Your info is so simple but, true, if the curb idle is too high, the idle screws are useless... Unless you're working on an "Edelbark" carburetor, which apparently he is. 😉 And it's "whomever..." (Just a tip for whomever). 😆 😊 Have a good one.

My father (he would be 83, if he was still around) used to idle the engine down...and the make the mixture adjustments...as you adjust for highest vacuum, the idle will come up....adjust down again...and persue highest vacuum AGAIN...keep doing it...eventually, you can get the engine to run so slow, that you can almost count the fan blades spinning by. Once you've achieved highest vac/lowest RPM....adjust idle back up to spec.

Good video -- thanks. You mentioned that turning the screws in, clockwise, leans out the mixture. But I've read elsewhere that turning it outward, anticlockwise, leans out the mixture because it in lets more air. Can you help clarify this?
@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 8 месяцев назад
On this carb, turning the screws in (clockwise) will create more of a lean condition as you go because the screw is going farther into the threaded port and letting less fuel go by. Once the screw bottoms out, no fuel can get past the screws and it would be the leanest condition possible and the engine will die.
@moparnut6286
@moparnut6286 Год назад
Your better off getting the vac reading directly from manifold vac as in the booster or other source away from carb. As that port is for old Ford's that used a vacuum modulator in the transmission.

I don't know what engine the manufacturer had in mind when they labeled the green zone, but it's really irrelevant with respect to your engine. What you're looking for is the highest vacuum you can find by adjusting your idle mixture screws until the needle won't go any higher. :)

@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 4 месяца назад
RPM is only important during this part of the process when you are trying to maintain your chosen idle while dialing in the mixture screws. RPM needs to be tweaked after setting the screws, and it may require adjusting them again. I cover all this in the full video. What we have here is a RU-vid Short, which is limited to 60 seconds and I cannot fit everything in 60 seconds. But I do reference the full video in the description. 🙂

Seated my screws back and opened both up 1 and a half turns now engine won’t turn over at all. Thoughts?
@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel Год назад
If the engine won't turn over, it has nothing to do with the idle mixture screws. The first thing I would check is the Starter. If you mean the engine turns over but doesn't fire, and all you did was bottom out the screws and then back them out, I'd check to make sure you didn't break the tip off the idle mixture screws in the idle seat on the carb. If the tip was broken off, air cannot get through there and affect the tiny amount of fuel being sent through the carb during idle. From here it is difficult to help as I don't know all the things that changed from the time it last ran fine until now. If all you did was adjust the idle mixture screws and nothing else, then there's some kind of issue with fuel getting through the carb during fire up.
@n8020
@n8020 Год назад
@@AndyKruseChannel Thanks. Originally the car was set to run at high altitude. Where I live is at sea level. The car would run rough but would take 10 minutes of feathering the gas to get it warm enough to idle without stalling. But it would still stall whenever you put it in gear. So I figured it was getting too much air or not enough gas. So I decided to screw with the idle mixture I seated both screws and at one point could feel the idle smooth out but then it stalled again. The screw on the right turns and rotates in a wobbly circular pattern I know that can’t be right but I’m reluctant to take off the carb and dig further, f’n it up more when it was just idleing…rough, but idleing. Now it won’t start just fires then cuts off immediately.

@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel Год назад
My first guess would be the Cam, but if it's the same unit as mine, then it could be differences in the Carb, the Intake Manifold, or even the settings on your Carb. It's tough to say, but the goal is the same, finding the best lean idle condition with the highest vacuum reading. :)
