I have been searching for a pattern to make an adult bib for my daughter who was brain damaged at 29 years old and she cannot swallow her saliva. I am now on my third make and they are just lovely, I am backing mine with terry or thin fleece to keep her dry. Thank you so much for this pattern it’s brilliant. Best wishes from the UK

well done video! I was wanting to see just clips in the neckline curve, and notches around the corner curves. And if the adult bib is made longer, no lap napkin is necessary.
@MaryMakes
@MaryMakes 7 месяцев назад
If you prefer more coverage you can easily adjust the length of the bib . I’ve made several custom orders like that. If it gets very long I would suggest using a top stitch when you turn it out so the longer layers don’t shift.

@@MaryMakes And I’ll be making one Very long! Sitting with feet up in my comfy chair during a meal with a soft lap pillow to set a dinner plate is more comfy and not as tippy like a Tray.. so have been using a t-towel from chin to under plate- to take any drips and messes! Yet I’ve hated when the chin cloth has come untucked and slipped down! Now functional, bright & cute… not old laddish! Ha. Thank you! 👍

You can if you want or even a thin piece of flannel… but it really not necessary. I’ve been using these bibs in my daycare for many many years and they work great. Two layers of quality quilter weight cotton is more than enough. You’re also going to add a lot of bulk which will make turning it out trickier and make it take up more space in the diaper bag 😉

Super project! Thanks for all the details. I'm working with a charity group at a local church. We're making adult-xszed bibs for the elderly using quilting cotton for the top 1/3 and a portion of a bath towel for the lower 2/3's. I'm making my first one and wondered if 30" was too long from top to bottom. I'm thinking that length will catch anything that falls in their laps. I guess I'll check to see how to best split up the bath towel and go from there.
@MaryMakes
@MaryMakes Год назад
Thanks so much! You’re more than welcome to top stitch if you want to add an extra step but it’s completely unnecessary with this pattern. I’ve been making a selling these bibs for 20 years so when I’m mass producing them I want a few steps as possible. Also this project is meant for a beginner and it can be very confusing learning how to adjust your needle setting on a first time project. Not to mention sewing in a circle and avoiding bunching is tricky for a beginner as well. However in reference to your project if you are going to add that much length AND the extra weight of terry cloth fabric you may indeed require a top stitch to keep the layers from shifting in the wash.
@MaryMakes
@MaryMakes Год назад
I should mention that I have several of these bibs that I use in my home daycare and have had for over a decade. They are in still in great shape and I’ve had no issues with them going through the wash over and over. I do prefer quilter weight cotton because it tends to cling to itself.

Oh my goodness...bless you! I just saw an apron that was basically like this except there were no ties or anything. It just had a hole you put your head in and it came down about halfway down your back. The front, of course, came to about halfway down your upper leg. Have you ever made anything like that. If you have, I would die for the pattern. My daughter owns a pretty popular bakery and goes through about 50 aprons a week. We bring them home to wash and it takes forever to untangle all the ties...the ones about the neck and waste. Then after we dry them, we have to go through that whole mess again. This one that I saw would be perfect for everyone in the bakery. Thanks so much for sharing your talent! You are amazing.
@MaryMakes
@MaryMakes Год назад
Thanks so much! I totally get what your saying I about the ties and think I have an idea of what your saying… kind of like a giant bib. Does it just hang loose? Or does it have straps that criss cross in the back? I’m sure I could work up some kind of functional apron with no ties.

Thanks for the video. Have you ever thought about double-sided infusing on the bibbs
@MaryMakes
@MaryMakes Год назад
You’re welcome. To be honest no I havent considered using fusing for serval reasons… it’s not a necessity step tge bib will hold together fine without it… it adds an additional piece of material that’s also not cheap to purchase so it adds more time AND cost to produce and it’s important to mention that some glue products are flammable and this being made for a child mostly I try to avoid anything like that. I try to keep my patterns a simple and effective as possible. You could absolutely use interfacing if you prefer to do so… but for me it’s a waste of time and money.

@MaryMakes
@MaryMakes 2 года назад
Hi Linda that’s great! Lots of beginners projects on my page :) to answer your question you don’t want the neck too skinny or it will be harder to turn inside out. Anywhere between 2-2.5 inches will work just fine. I wouldn’t go lower than 3 or it will be ridiculously wide lol
@Beverly2020
@Beverly2020 11 месяцев назад
Thank you for this video! I could not find a shape that I liked and this was perfect! Also your idea about making the pattern on butcher paper was so helpful. I’m making bibs for Meals on Wheels. I placed my fabric right sides together and folded in half. Then ironed the “half pattern” on the fold and cut once and fabrics were already matched to sew.
@MaryMakes
@MaryMakes 11 месяцев назад
Oh that’s so great to include a bib! And yes that’s definitely a nice time saving tip plus keeps your design symmetrical!That’s exactly how I cut the patterns that I sell. Unfortunately when I make bibs I’m making huge piles of them at a time so it’s too bulky to fold in half like without worrying about the inner layers shifting.

What about for absorbing if that's just material like without any terry cloth or plastic or like one of the little things across the bottom that might catch something that the baby spits out of their mouth you have any patterns for that? As far as the adults go well that's more like a lap napkin to me so there's probably does not have to have all that

I have a home daycare. I personally don’t like the bubs with cups are the bottom because a lot of the time the food never makes it in there anyways 🤣 and if it does it makes the big harder to clean afterwards especially since the food can get mushed down into the bottom seams and then you have to basically scrape it out with your fingers before you wash it. I also have a dog so if anything overshoots the bib she takes care of that lol 😂

Is it just an optical illusion and really looks bigger when it is done. I'm getting ready to make it now. Just wondering also, maybe it is for a newborn???
@MaryMakes
@MaryMakes Год назад
Hi Peggy I assure you the neck opening is more than enough. A child’s neck even a chubby child is not very wide at all. Trust me I own a home daycare 😉 This bib will fit up to a 4 yr old easily. Also you need to keep in mind that you will have a seam allowance around the entire perimeter of the neck opening which will make the space larger in the finished product then the pattern. Give it a try you’ll see! 🤗

@@MaryMakes thank you so much Mary. I love the way the freezer paper sticks to the fabric. I was so happy to see how well it worked. I love the pattern very much. I’m making one now for my niece. She just turned 1. I love your channel and it is one of my favorites that I go to often. You’re a great teacher!

@@MaryMakes I made the bib and I love it. I haven’t given it to her yet but I will when I see them. I will try to figure out how to send a picture.

Making these as Xmas presents adults and children! Sick child in bed…spaghetti night..! Size of Velcro? I want to line inside with flannelette for stability and absorption. Too much weight?

Lol you’re welcome. I’ve been using them in my home daycare for years and have never felt the need to add an extra layer for absorbtion. And stability wise they are fine not flimsy. I’m sewing mine out of quilter weight cotton which is sturdy stuff. However I have had lots of views use Terry cloth or flannel backing for adult size bib since the spill can be bigger and clothes not as easy to change. So you might want to consider that instead of adding a 3rd layer with the lining. But you can always give it try and see 🤷🏻‍♀️ For Velcro I’d use the 3/4in wide and about 1.5-2in long.

Hi Gwen! These are my all time favorite sewing scissors. I use the small ones for everything tiny like mopping threads. And the large ones are perfect for cutting fabric. My hands get sore easily and both pairs are very comfortable! I’ve had them for many years and they are still nice and sharp! Sewing Scissor Set- amzn.to/3y9DDxa
