kneeling while saying my prayers has definitely been a struggle since it’s so easy to feel uncomfortable. but i’ve noticed that once you’re really mediating and focusing, you hardly notice anything at all :)

Etiquette for Adoration, Step one: Be quiet. Every other step: See step one.

Lol 😂 I hear 👂 you. I hear bead rattlers all the time. Not praying just using their Rosary 📿 like it’s a fidget toy or something. I try to let the annoyance recall me to the present moment and keep me aware of the presence of Jesus and my presence with Him. Key word: TRY. Not always successful. I’m sure I am unaware of the things I do that annoy others as well.

I'm not sure about the walking backwards. If you watch traditional nuns who have perpetual adoration, they don't walk backwards when they walk out of the church. The priest, after placing the monstrance doesn't process backwards up the aisle hoping not to mow down an altar server. This makes me suspect it's a local custom or a misinterpretation of an exhortation not to stand with our backs to the Lord while chatting to a parishioner during adoration, rather than universal Catholic etiquette.

I loved reading this about being distracted in Adoration" If the heart wanders or is distracted, bring it back to the point quite gently and replace it tenderly in its Master's presence. And even if you did nothing during the whole of your hour but bring your heart back and place it again in Our Lord's presence, though it went away every time you brought it back, your hour would be very well employed." -St. Francis de Sales

Also, if you’re the first or last one in the adoration chapel and your tabernacle has either a door or a cloth hiding the host: be on both knees and bow when exposing him, and if you are the last one before leaving, re cover Him again in the same reverent manner.

Great video! I joined the Church 50 years ago and this is the first time I've heard about walking backwards when the Host is exposed. It does seem like an appropriate and very reverent practice. But if I tried it, I would most likely wind up on the floor. I still do the double genuflection, and I rarely see anyone doing it these days. You are so right about wearing our Sunday best for Mass and adoration. I admit I get lazy sometimes and show up in jeans. I need to make more of an effort.

This was very helpful. I'm a senior citizen, RC all my life, went to Catholic elementary school, and still didn't know about Adoration or the etiquette for it. I feel much more comfortable since I sort of stumbled upon an Adoration chapel a few month ago. One difference though-- the thing about walking backwards-- my first Adoration after watching your video, when leaving, I started to walk backwards as you said is proper etiquette but stopped, because, honestly, it felt clownish. I looked at a few other Adoration etiquette videos (by priests) and no one else mentions anything about walking backwards. That's just how I feel.

I totally agree 100% with everything you have noted in this video. Going back to how we dress for church/adoration… I have been attending a lot of Spanish language masses here in the USA lately. (It’s summer, and this parish is much closer to my house than the one I am enrolled in - a 5 min drive vs a 30 min drive, I cantor and am in choir at the farther church.) Anyway, initially I didn’t enjoy the hispanic mass because it seemed more festive than reverent. After a few more visits it became very clear to me that the hispanic catholics have such an incredibly rich faith, they are praying the rosary and litany of the saints before each mass begins, and the majority absolutely dress for God. The percentage of parishioners who veil there is much higher as well. It is such a drastic difference. This parish does have a couple English masses too, but the difference between the two are like night and day. I’m considering making this my home parish, but not right away. I’m feeling it out a bit more and praying on it. I have learned to love the Spanish mass now too, plus it’s great learning the prayers in a third language. But yes, the Spanish adoration was the first place I saw people back away from Our Lord’s flesh.

I was good w/ everything except how to walk out. We didn't have Adoration at my small, rural parish growing up. At my suburban parish we have built a separate, freestanding Eucharistic Adoration chapel, which I frequent, but for some reason I only ever witness Hispanics backing out so I thought it was more of a cultural thing rather than general etiquette. Good info. Being a small chapel, though, we're able to repose the Blessed Sacrament if have to leave and no one else is there. This is very convenient if you're only able to stop for 10 or 15 minutes on your way to work, etc. Thank you for the videos, though. I'm sending them to a dear friend who has never even been to Adoration and has no idea what to do if he goes. God Bless!

Set the example for others. I teach Catechism and one of the things I tell the children is to remember to wear a nice clean shirt and trousers or the girls a simple blouse and a skirt that covers the knees. I showed them a picture of a group of children in a very poor village in Africa and they only had one t-shirt for school and one for church and no shoes. Before the children went into the church they washed their feet. My family was poor, but my sister and I each had one nice church dress and church shoes. Nothing fancy, but only for Mass and very special occasions. I remember wearing a crocheted "doiley" as a head covering at Mass until I made my Confirmation and my mom gave me a veil. I'm 77 and continue to wear a veil and encourage other women to veil.

I think dress is personal preference and some people put way too much emphasis on it. I do not agree with her comments about “Sunday Best.” Jesus sees the heart, not the clothes. John the Baptist walked around eating locusts and they all likely wore single garments, sandals, and rarely washed. This is a modern, Westernized rule. If you feel called to veil or dress up, by all means, but our clothes should be the least of our worries 🙏🏼
@willthatcatholicguy
@willthatcatholicguy Год назад
Great video thank you. Some of things you mention, I've done. One thing that is different is dress etiquette here in the south, well Texas to be specific. Sunday's best is your best pair of jeans, clean boots, button down shirt with or with out a sports jacket/coat, sometimes just a polo for men, dresses of any kind for women as long as its modest. Which is 100% different then when I was a child going to church in the NY area, where it was three piece suits for men only, and elaborate dresses for women. Me personally, I disliked that a lot when I went to church as a kid and even into my teens. I literally disliked wearing that and it made going to church feel like an uncomfortable chore. I know a lot of other people who felt this way as well. Anyhow, my point being, I think Sunday's best, really depends on the area of the US and yes I will be the one you mentioned about dress. BUT I do dress better then if I went to a dance or a party for church, because of respect for my Lord. Edit: Oh yeah, I can't kneel at all due to various knee injuries, so when it comes time to kneel, I will sit forward and place my good knee down and keep the bad one up, so I am still taking a knee and that's perfectly acceptable.

Im planning on going to a adoration chapel near our school, at least once a day. I did my first visit yesterday and was able to do the rosary (wearing my earphones) with a app called "Hallow" wherein you may pick the basic rosary (16 mins+) or the rosary with reflections (26 minutes). Also, the kneeler in that chapel is quite hard and not comfy, so what I did is that, every "our father..", "glory be..", and the first hail mary of each decade of the rosary, I kneel and then sit again to continue the decade. Thank you so much for this video! Love from the Philippines

@@debrabusing1264 I believe it was St. John Vianney who asked one of his parishioners, what he did in the church. The old man said, "I look at Him (Jesus) and He looks at me." The only thing you have to do is be reverent. When you come into the presence of Our Lord genuflect, if you can, or bow before Him in the Tabernacle or the Monstrance on the altar. Sit or kneel and then pray in silence. No special prayers except what is in your heart. Tell Our Lord how much you love Him and what is in your mind. Sit quietly and listen to Him. If there is a prayer group going on, you can pray with them or choose to sit apart and quietly say your own prayers. If you are there for Benediction, there should be booklets or the missalette with the prayers for all to say. I hope this helps. Peace and blessings!

Hmm...I have heard this 'Not turning your back to Jesus', but have not observed anyone 'NOT' do this. I think for two reasons: it's both impractical and more of a safety issue. If I recall, even during Exposition, Benediction, and reposition, I haven't seen the priest go backwards. It's a great idea and makes a lot of sense for etiquette, I just haven't seen this in practice. I've been going to Eucharistic Adoration on a regular weekly basis for over a year. Great points! Amber, physically walking backwards all the way to the entrance, seems to me like a dangerous thing to do, especially in a large Church (small chapel maybe different) and the Church doesn't really require it from you. I feel like kneeling, and maybe one or two steps backward out of reverence should be enough, then you can turn around and walk to the exit. It's just how I feel about it. You have to be practical and safe, Jesus doesn't want you to endanger yourself or others unnecessarily.

This was a good video. A lot of priests don't want to talk about specific rubrics or etiquette because they don't want to offend people who do things differently, or who have done things one way their whole life, and for other reasons. So, thank you for taking on this issue. I think you're spot on about clothing and dress. It's all about reverence. Our utmost for his highest. I love the idea of walking backwards, I do this to some extent even at Mass. Taken to another level, do you turn your back on or your attention away from the Blessed Sacrament when you give the sign of peace? Hmm, something to think about. People will judge you and even hate you for doing things like this, but then I remember the Litany of Humility and I realize this is to be expected. A small penance actually. One last thing, Dennis Prager is not Catholic and maybe not such a good person to get advice from.

My terminology is bad because I’m a recent convert. In our adoration chapel, we don’t have a traditional monstrance-ours is more of a tabernacle with a door that you can open and close. What is the etiquette on this if I come into the chapel alone and the door to this tabernacle is closed? Do I open it to expose Jesus or do I leave it closed? Sorry for the ignorance, I just want to be as respectful as possible when I visit Him.

I'm sorry I just saw your comment from a year ago. #1 always be quiet and reverent. Our Lord should NEVER be left alone and unguarded especially if just anyone can open the Tabernacle, which should NOT ever be left unlocked. Please let the priest know about this. There should be a schedule for at least 2 people to be assigned to be at the chapel at every hour and each one signs in on arrival. The main reason for keeping the Tabernacle locked and for having at least two people in the chapel is so mo one will commit a sacrilege against Our Lord by desecration and stealing the sacred Eucharist.

@@berthaadams6742 You're quite welcome and I'm glad to be of assistance. Our Church is such a wonderful treasure trove and has so much history behind it. I'm going recommend that you read Beautiful Eucharist by Matthew Kelly. It's a great little book on Adoration. I also recommend Rome Sweet Rome by Scott Haun. It's about how he and his wife converted from the Presbyterian church, but as you read it you will discover more about our Church.

Where I’m from, when we see Jesus in the Eucharist (monstrance, tabernacle, etc) our foreheads hit the floor and our butts the air - or we just prostrate. THEN, we sit or whatever

Why can't you just have cabinet doors in front of the monstrance where the host is, then close the doors before you leave? I go to a church that does this for adoration. It seems a bit excessive to say that you can't leave if no one's there.

Just commenting on this cuz u seem to mention a lot. As someone who goes to daily mass, I completely agree about the dressing up well for Sunday mass. However, to dress up every day or always have a spare clothes is a bit much for daily mass or adoration. That can cause us to be too concerned about what we wear. As long as the attire is modest and respectful, it should not be much of a concern for daily sacraments. I love your videos and advise. I just would be careful in overemphasizing the importance of clothes for the daily sacraments. While we should still keep reverence, the fact ur there for the sacrament is infinitely more important and shouldn’t discourage anyone from going or create anxiety. God bless 🙏

Dressing up isn't about the wearing expensive clothes, but about wearing appropriate clothes. Most everyone should have something that is modest and fits properly. It doesn't have to be extravagant. I'm a widow and wear t-shirts, jeans and sneakers on a daily basis because they are sturdy, but for Mass I have one black skirt and a couple of nice blouses and a good pair of shoes.

Let’s also keep in mind that there are many people who don’t have the option to dress up.

not the emergency skirt 😂😂 I think Jesus is just happy for us to draw near to him. Come as you are. I don’t He minds what we choose to wear when being with him. I just personally would never wear revealing clothing when at church/chapel out of respect

I think Jesus is happy to see us. The walking backwards etiquette seems a little bit strange to me. You can pray with your eyes closed, you can pray with your back pointing to Jesus. This doesn't seem to be disrespectful to me.

Do you talk to someone with your back to them normally ...usually face to face right. As per walking backwards unless your in a crowd....it's not wring unless you have balance issues..he's your king you should walk backwards like leaving the court of the highest king you just encountered. Turn around after leaving the main alter room & exiting past the doors into it

Before entering the building, I silence notifications on my phone. I put my earphone in one ear and proceed to open the Hallow app and I make sure everything is ready to go before entering the exposition of the Eucharist. I don't have something playing into my ears constantly because I want moments of silence, but I have it queued with sacred music or devotional or dailies. I would estimate I use my phone in Adoration 15-20 mins. 🩸🌝❤️‍🔥⚜️
