Adrenal Symptoms vs Thyroid Symptoms: Don't Get Confused

Is your problem your adrenals or your thyroid or both? Adrenal and thyroid problems can mimic one another and make diagnosing the problem very difficult. I've seen patients believe that their primary problem is their adrenals when it's their thyroid and vice versa.
In most cases, it's BOTH issues at the same time and treating one will NOT fix the other. You must treat BOTH your thyroid and your adrenals if you want to feel better.
There is a strong connection between your adrenal glands and your thyroid gland. Those people who have low thyroid function, otherwise known as hypothyroidism, tend to ALSO have problems with their adrenal functions or adrenal fatigue.
The problem is that there is a big overlap in the symptoms seen in both adrenal fatigue and hypothyroidism such that it can be hard to tease out the difference between the two.
Learn more about the symptoms between these conditions, how to determine if your symptoms are related to your thyroid or your adrenals or both, and how to test for adrenal problems.
This connection is so strong that I recommend all thyroid patients treat their adrenal glands.

@@tanyawieczorek6603 Eventually, yes and still working on it! After my 8th loss, a stillborn this time, at 41 weeks one year ago my thyroid and all symptoms went crazy, my tsh was always at a 4-5 but no doctor acknowledged an issue despite being very symptomatic, I had massive flares after giving birth and it reached a 10 along with my other thyroid labs (Free T3 and free T4 being out of whack, antibodies were good though surprisingly). Lead me down a rabbit hole of thyroid even more (always suspected it). I’m now on Levothyroxine AND liothyronine it’s my 3rd month. My thyroid labs are now optimal but I still have some adrenal problems (I think though it could just be a result of trauma) but everything else has improved dramatically. I need to work more on my adrenals it’s not something I’ve started focusing on too much, baby steps for me. I also discovered I was low in iron, vit d, folate, b12 and my inflammation crp was at almost a 10. After starting supplementing with better supplements than I was on and going on thyroid meds I’ve improved everything. I took nac for inflammation and I got it down to a 4. I’m going to be trying LDN soon to further help. I’ve still not gotten pregnant again yet though but it’s only my 3rd month and 1 of those times our timing wasn’t great and I think there’s other factors still going on. Overall though my health and well-being has improved. I no longer suffer constipation for example like ever, I don’t suffer from that inwardly cold feeling and I don’t feel like I’m literally losing my mind and I can get through the day without having a sleep, despite the massive mental consequences of losing our son my depression improved overnight once I started meds, I’ve been able to actually clean the house and do things again before I was just too tired. Lots of improvements I’ve not listed here.

I had a traumatic event summer 2019 and slowly, I started gaining weight rapidly. I got scared and did research to look into Hashimotos. I asked to be tested for tpo antibodies and they came back positive. I focused on my thyroid, got on meds, increased doses according to labs, added t3 as my rt3 was high.. I did it all. I still continued to lose weight. I figured I can do my regular workout, teach my fitness classes as I was being medicated. I had been so tired for a long time, worked 2-4 jobs, 12 hours a day, had major toxic relationships, and was always chronically stressed. Summer 2019 was my tipping point as a miscarriage, im guessing, tanked my adrenals. It was down hill from there. After a year of research, i finally realized (through a dutch test) I have chronic adrenal fatigue, cortisol was low all dat, thyroid low, ALL sex hormones were low, dhea was non existent, etc. So I focused on thyroid when it was my adrenals that I needed to support.

I know I have adrenal fatigue for sure. I keep talking to my doctor about it and they won't do testing for me. They just redirect me back to my thyroid. My thyroid is fine! Thry just keep telling me if symptoms persist then come back within a few weeks or a few months and they'll test my thyroid again 😑 I can hardly get out of bed in the morning. I have so much I'm determined to do and I'm not depressed... I just feel like there is a 500 pound weight crushing me! I'm wired but tired 😫

Thyroid humor: In this case the thyroid is in a toxic, co-dependent relationship with the adrenals. Yes, I have like most all they Hypothyroid list, but fertility issues seeing as how I am 55.5 years of age. I have many of the Adrenal symptoms-tired but wired, intense cravings for sugar and carbs, caffeine pretty much keeps me alive. I don't gain a lot of weight but I don't lose it either. I can certainly pack in on easily as I already have major weight issues. Question, how do we fix our adrenals or at least improve them? Thank you for another informative video, Dr. Childs.

I know I’ve had low thyroid many years ago- along with the suite of insulin resistance, severe pcos/ estrogen dominance… but docs didn’t mention my thyroid for years- but of course conventional docs don’t really understand thyroid. Ugh. I take adaptogens and I just started learning about thyroid again. I am so tired of having health issues to fix, it’s been over 30 years..,

I tested it all - thyroid TSH, fT3, fT4. rT3 recently as well, which was hard to get. Cortisol, Saliva Cortisol during the day... there is a minor thyroid hypofunction which I am treating with a T4/T3 combination, but other than that all values are declared normal by the labs and doctors. The cortisol saliva was done three times over some years and twice it was in norm range, with a bit low levels in the evenings, once it was too high in the morning and too low in the evening. So I have no clue as to how to treat it. I guess the main suggestions I get is to reduce stress, do sports like jogging regularly and meditate regularly...

I love this video on how adrenal fatigue effects cortisol!! But can you do one on how how high cortisol might affect adrenal function? My doctor told me I'm hypo thyroid, despite being in the low normal range, and prescribed T3 only. At two weeks taking 30mcg of T3 only, I began noticing periods of elevated resting heart rate, especially in the mornings, of 90- 130 for hours. I got nervous, quit the T3 and a bunch of my hair fell out. A friend told me my cortisol was probably too high to tolerate the T3... could this be possible?? 🤔

Had thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer at age 16 (I’m now 60), with no problems since, other than having radioctive iodine treatments about 10 yrs ago to help get rid of some thyroid tissue that showed up on a scan. I have always felt tired but the last few months I have suffered with extreme fatigue/low energy which is impacting my life in a neg way because I have no motivation to do anything anymore, and I am pushing myself to get through the day and perform well at work. My hair has been thinning terribly this past year, dry skin, and developed eczema/psoriasis about 2 yrs ago. I also deal with lots of joint & muscle pain (which on top of the low energy issue makes it difficult to try to exercise or do anything active, and takes me a while to get up and move upon awakening. I take ibuprofen daily for this, which I know is not good to do, but idk what else to do, other than yoga, but I just don’t have the energy or motivation enough for it. My sister was recently diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and yet never had thyroid issues (that we knew of until now). Could I possibly have Hashimoto’s even w/o a thyroid? I have ALL the symptoms in both lists, except depression. I never had a wet problem until the past couple yrs, and have gradually gained an extra 15 pounds, and now have a bloated belly as well. I thought it must be high cortisol due to stress, lack of sleep. I haven’t seen an endocrinologist in several yrs, but my family physician has done a thyroid panel on me and checks my t3/t4 occasionally, and always says they’re “normal,” but a past endo doc yrs ago informed me that normal for me is not the same due to the history of thyroid cancer, so I’m unsure if I’m even taking the correct dose of Levothyroxine (recently pharmacy chgd it to Euthyroxine). I’m wondering if the Euthyroxine is not working as well and making me more tired? I live in the Kansas City area and trying to find a good endo doc. (I’m sorry this was so lengthy) ~Suzy~

The blood tests aren't very effective in detecting underactive thyroid. /Taking your under-arm basal cell temperature under BOTH arms, first thing in the morning before you even sit up in bed over a few days is MUCH more accurate. If either arm is much below 97.6 you are hypo-thyroid. One side of your body could be worse than the other side. The same goes for blood pressure, kidney function and a lot of things - but that hasn't dawned on orthodox medicine yet.

I moved to the East Coast and quit taking that medication. No refills on it and still looking for the right doctor. I have both adrenal and thyroid issues. I venture to guess that having a complete hysterectomy at age 27 and being a highly driven multi Tasker born in state of fight or flight burned out my adrenals and that dampend my thyroid. I'm 13 days into just eating meat, salt water and as much animal fats as my body will tolerate, in hopes of healing my adrenals and thyroid.

I was put on NP because I tested with a sky high TSH (but normal T4) (no other tests before medicating) and got severe hyper symptoms within 5 days. I'm starting to seriously suspect that adrenals may be making appearances for a thyroid condition which I've never felt I had symptoms of in the first place but was pressured into medicating by more than one doctor. Feeling at a loss of what to do about this but it has really tanked my quality of life for the past nearly 5 months.

I have had low thyroid for over 23 years. It was discovered 22 years ago. When I went on Levothyroxine, it changed my life almost immediately, for a while... I was SO much better. But, over the years, maybe by 5 years after that, and since, I have increasingly gotten worse again. I have never had my cortisol tested, until last week. I don't have the results yet, so am not sure if that is my problem, but watching this was helpful to me. I knew a little bit about adrenal fatigue, but always thought my issues were a need for NDT or T-3. So far, my doctor is not interested in changing my medicine. I suffer with hypothyroidism for 20 years and and diagnosed with Hashimotos 3 years ago. If my TSH is hight then my Thyroid is not working properly so the antibodies are atacking the Thyiroid. I'm taking Armour 90 mg,and I still have Thyiroid problems, anxiaty, stress irritability, brain fog, difficult loosing weight. It could be that I need to address the adrenals first. I have been alternating the meds daily from 90 to 75 mlg Is been Olmos two months! I felt better. My Dr says he cannot prescribe Armour with other meds. I hope I can address the adrenals and take less meds or get off the meds. Thank you so much for your info, support and hard work! Thank you! ***I need so much help*** Everything you say makes sense. I know a lot from years of research. But, now at almost 48, I am at my highest weight and it can be a combination of so much: no thyroid, not eating much, no energy to walk or exercise, adrenal, hormones, fibromyalgia meds, antidepressants meds...... My doctor will test me for whatever I suggest, so he is not the problem. Coming up with a plan that will help me is the challenge.

I have low cortisol but still within range. My body is also favoring cortisone over cortisol per my dutch test. I used to have brain fog and feel wired but tired but now I'm just tired. I wake up not tired but by 1-4pm I have to take a nap. Then I wake up and I'm good again. It hasn't always been this way. I used to be a lot worse off. But something that has been happening is that I have these weird throat thumps (feels like a painless spasm) underneath my thyroid.) triggered by stress.

Thanks for sharing! Love your videos, they are very helpful! I had graves, regret RAI, and I have multiple symptoms that cross over prob cause of not having thyroid. Would I have to take supplements to fix the adrenals forever or temporarily? I’m going to order several of your supplements but I’m unsure of how long to take them for. The hair loss supplements, do I take them forever? Like gutbom for weight loss, if I stop taking it will the weight come back etc. Thanks!

Stage 3 adrenal fatigue here and it's causing T4 -> T3 conversion issues among a host of other problems. It's so bad that I get paradoxical reactions i.e. Cytomel burns me out and puts me in a coma. At least it helped me figure out that it's a liver issue with T3 and cortisol. Possibly Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver (my BMI is only 22!) and/or heavy metal/pesticide/herbicide accumulation.

I'm on liothyronine only right now and even though more alert mentally the fatigue is so draining and I sleep so much. It's new for me so maybe my body is adjusting but its frustrating. When I had my cortisol checked it was slightly above reference, I freaked out but doctor said it was fine and other hypothyroid patients on forums said I should be worried instead if my cortisol was low in the morning. My questions is, then why am I so fatigued if I do have the right amount of cortisol? I've never discussed adrenal fatigue with my doctor, just asked if cortisol affects the bad reactions I've had to t4 medications and he said no.

I’m very tired in the morning and I wake up alert approx 3:30 AM IM Taking Adrenotone in the AM and in the afternoon . I’m having difficulty keeping my FT3 optimal while struggling with adrenal fatigue . I also have brain fog. How can I heal my adrenals (normal cortisol curve throughout the day as I’m taking NDT at the same time since I do not have a thyroid? I’m afraid to take less NDT since I need thyroid to think. Hi Dr. Childs I have had adrenal issues for about 5 years maybe longer because doctors just laughed at me. I could barely function. I had been in prednisone my whole life for RA. I was eventually put on hydrocortisone 37mg a day in multiple doses along with compounded thyroid meds. I started having weight gain and blood pressure issues so I have weaned myself down now to 19mg morning with my thyroid meds and another 4mg at 11:30am and then 4mg at 3pm. So a total of 27mg a day. I still test very low cortisol in the morning bloodwork. I am functioning not too badly cognitive wise. My question is with the Covid virus which I’m in the high risk group should it get me should I be trying to get my hydrocortisone dose down further? I seem to be having some fluid retention issues and was seeing an Accupunturist but with the restrictions my treatments are in hold I’m feeling it. Any ideas what I an do. I have often wondered what was primary the adrenal or the thyroid. I went through a long period of complete gut dysbiosis. It’s taken a long time and work but my gut is better but food is still a big problem for me. I’m gluten, dairy, egg, wheat, soy and canola free. Thanks for any advice. Is it possible to get a phone consultation with you?

I have no pituitary gland function so I have adrenal insufficiency as well as hypothyroidism. I get these two confused all the time because the symptoms are so similar. This may be out of your wheelhouse, but can you do a video to address issues facing those of us with hypothyroidism, as well as full-fledged adrenal insufficiency? it can be very confusing. I may think I need to updose my steroid when it’s really thyroid levels that are low. Furthermore, the electrolyte imbalances are confusing. My Sheehan’s support group suggests we do better in the upper third of normal T3. I know I feel absolutely miserable and unable to function in the lower quarter.

Only now seeing this video, because only now I've just found out I have hypothyroidism. All my symptoms are on the hypothyroid side, apart from one. I constantly crave carbohydrates, and I am constantly mega hungry. I don't crave sweet stuff. It might sound crazy, but I crave pototatoes, and parsnip. That sort of thing. I do sometimes crave pasties, or pies, but I will only eat whole foods. My hunger is driving me crazy. My GP has done a cortisol test, and my cortisol was normal. Obviously he does the test the traditional way of a GP. So like I said, it was normal. So is that enough to rule out poor adrenal function?

They are leaning towards me having lymphoma cancer and that's what the spots are.
