Good morning Dea. In my opinion, no the teacher shouldn't have said what she had said or made you start it over. It wasn't an assignment. A teacher should know that children have creative imagination, especially in art. She could have really put a dent in creativity. Thinking back to when I was a child. I colored and painted how I wanted or how I wish things could be. Our realism when we are so young, yellow for the sun, green for grass and leaves and brown for tree trunks. I'm glad she didn't dull your artistic shine 😊

Hi Dea: I think that teacher should go to work retail. None of my art teachers were all that interested in teaching me. I was that art student that really stunk. and there were other students that were good and teachers were excited to teach them. We should tell all children , that if any of their teachers say that their picture isn't realistic; that in the color detention it is realistic. Uea, I'm that person that has a thought and it comes out my mouth before I realize I had the thought. I love the way you share your knowledge. Thank you very much!

Hi Dea. I entered a coloring challenge in one of my coloring groups a couple years ago or so...and it was a crayon only challenge. I chose a page from my Raggedy Ann & Andy coloring book. Yes, it's a children's coloring book that is mine. It's got that crappy paper, too. So, I used the front as a guide for what color went where, and scanned it. My husband's scanner isn't very good, but it was sufficient. I tied for first place! I wish I could show it to you. No shading, just coloring. Raggedy Andy's shirt is plaid, and I really had to sharpen my pencils to a sharp point. (Have to remove the sharpener from the box so you can really use your muscles to hold the sharpener while you really push them into the sharpener end. It worked for me!) Talk about persnickety details! That shirt almost got me. The hair was fun too. Yeah. I sharpened a lot of crayons. I used more than just Crayola, as I was using an old bunch of pieces leftover from my children. Yeah, my "baby" is 27! It gave me many different shades and formulations to work with. If one didn't work, I put it aside, and grabbed another one. Your bubbles look great, by the way! I love watching you color. It doesn't matter what you use, it turns out beautiful. (I played with the children's watercolor strips that we buy for our children for school supplies. Kinda fun!) As for your teacher's comment. Perhaps, it was the time. Nowadays, they let the children choose whatever color they like. My grandson made a gingerbread man for Christmas, and named him "Spiderman". Also, he made a dinosaur using his handprint. Things are different now. Already framed a couple things that my granddaughter brought home from school. She did a page using a wax resist technique. It's very nice. She put hearts in the sky area, and then colored over the area so the hearts outline stands out. Thanx, Mindy

I personally think the teacher was a bit harsh. Even if she specified that your picture should be realistic, there is a very fine line between realism and fantasy in young children and I'll always see art as a matter of perspective. Lori from Color My World once told a somewhat similar story about her daughter. When she was in primary school, the teacher told her to write a 'b' and she wrote it with a lot of swirls and squiggly lines. So the teacher called her parents in and told them something was wrong with her and that she "just wasn't getting it". They disagreed and Lori told her daughter, "Write a 'b' like mom does" and she wrote it correctly. Lori told the teacher her daughter was not wrong and that was simply her perspective and how she saw a 'b'. Lori's daughter is now a very talented artist and can put the 150 set of Prismacolors in order without even looking at the color names or numbers because she has such an amazing eye for color. I think maybe your multi-colored raindrops were your perspective. How can perspective ever be "wrong"? I actually love how your picture turned out. I kinda love the texture of crayons. I actually saw color with Claire do shiny black hair today using periwinkle to blend. It's really useful and helpful to know which colors blend well without creating mud. Thank you, Dea, as always for another lovely video with interesting commentary.

Hello Dea! Thank you for this video! I absolutely love crayons and the way they smell. I may be weird but I also love the paper in kids coloring books. Prismacolor pencils also work really good for accents along with crayons on that paper. I have kids books & crayons and I'm not ashamed to use them, lol! As for your kindergarten teacher......she was so wrong, very wrong. True art does not come from following "standards", it comes from the heart & soul of the artist, no matter what age. Now I'm craving that crayon smell! By the way, I sharpen mine with the big side of a two hole cheap sharpener. It can be tedious but works well if you go slow. Thanks again for the video!

I love the way they smell too!! And I'm with you about the paper too--and I have no problem with Createspace paper OTHER than the fact that it is too thin. And I agree--she was critiquing an image that had no pre-set parameters--and implying that there were. I hope she calmed down. And yes again! Art come from the heart and soul. Thanks for the great comment--and have a great day! xo

I know this is old, but I feel so strongly about this! With older kids, you can set up your guidelines from the beginning and hold the students to it. If the expectations aren't properly set, that's the teacher's fault, and they need to take it as a learning experience for themselves. When I taught (admittedly briefly), it was high school math. Very little math at the high school level is very creative, but we still had creative assignments. This is why rubrics are important! Students can't know how to meet expectations if they aren't communicated well. So anything creative was only graded based on what I said I'd grade on. It's the same even with choosing how to solve a math problem. There are multiple ways to approach quadratic equations. I promise, there really are reasons for a teacher to ask you to solve a problem using a certain method. But that has to be established beforehand! Otherwise, students should get to exercise their skills in choosing how they want to solve it. Back to young children, though. You couldn't have overreacted! Children have to learn how to control their emotions, and it takes time. Teachers should be very aware of this. If you upset a kid, they may react far stronger than an adult would, but that doesn't mean it's inappropriate for them. It's a teacher's job to know appropriate ways to talk to children. Literally.

I would say that most art is subjective which would make your teacher wrong for saying what she did. ESPECIALLY to a child. I would never try to stomp on a child’s creative imagination unless they were being downright destructive. Anyway, I had a similar experience when I was in the 3rd grade. We always had art time on Wednesday afternoons and were allowed to create whatever we wanted. (Let me back up and say that for some reason my 3rd grade teacher hated me.......why, I do not know.....I was a very sweet, shy little girl.). Anyway, I had drawn this big green frog.....I am by no means an artist but I just remember being so incredibly proud of myself and thinking that it was the most beautiful frog I’d ever seen. The teacher was walking up and down the isle looking at our creations and when she got to me she stopped and snatched my paper off my desk and said, “Linda Michele, what in the world is this?” I painfully replied, “a frog.” And then she held up my paper for the class to see and said, “Linda Michele (Lord I hated how she called me by BOTH names) thinks she’s drawn a frog......what do you think class? Isn’t this the ugliest frog you’ve ever seen?” Of course I was humiliated and began crying and then she told me to stop being such a baby and went to the next person. It was an awful experience and I wonder sometime if it’s the reason I have such a hard time liking anything I color.

Lol, Dea! That wasn't weird, it was fun, just like I thought it would be! Your picture actually came out pretty, I'd say and those water drops turned out great considering! I still have the 24 and 64 pack of crayons from when our daughter was young, so they are over 30 years old. Been meaning to play around with them, just haven't gotten around to it yet. i still have my first coloring book from grade school as well. By the time i got into 3rd grade, I still had a hard time coloring inside the lines. My teacher was someone who did what she could so her students could be the best they could be. So she sent me home with a note to my parents instructing them to take me shopping for one because I had to take it back to school, I think it was every week or maybe every other week to show her my progress. I didn't choose one with fairies or princesses, I choose "Lassie". By the end of the year, I had improved drastically and was coloring really well. I left it home when I left home-BIG mistake on my part. Ended up having to rescue it about 25 years ago before my nephews and nieces destroyed it completely. I was proud of that coloring book and what it represented to me and I discovered pages done with those cheap water colors and completely out of the lines and opposite of what I was doing. I have discovered that the paper they used in children's books back then was 2-3 times thicker than they use now. (The water color didn't even bleed through to the other side, fortunately!) As for your teacher-self expression in art was something they obviously didn't understand. Were they wrong? Part of me says yes, the other part of me says that they were just doing their job the best that they knew how. But really when it comes to Art, they should have allowed you to express yourself the way you wanted because there is no right or wrong way to do art - unless it is just pure evil and disgusting.

Loved your demonstration with the crayons - the layers made it look more realistic, even with crayons. I had art in the 50’s. Then my art teacher would draw an example on the board with colored chalk of what she wanted us to do. The one I remembered was cattails. I thought mine looked pretty good, but when she stopped by my desk, she actually drew on my picture to show me how to do it the “right” way. I thought hers was beautiful, but I can’t help but wonder if that is why I’m so afraid to actually start coloring. Swatching pencils is a lot safer than actual coloring!

Well that was fun. I have used wax crayons for doing quick sketches and I found they freed me up quite a lot, but never tried them in a colouring book. I was wondering what effect you might get with blending solution, so Suuby's comment was apposite! Maybe I shall dig mine out again and have a go. As for your teacher, she sounded a bit much! It is one thing saying as much to a teenager in a proper art class, but an elementary schoolkid should be encouraged to experiment as much as possible, there is plenty of time later on to practice realism!

It's nice to know I'm not the only adult who still likes to color with crayons and you provided a great deal of inspiration and instruction. As for that teacher, unless they specifically instructed to create something "realistically" then you are free to create and make your ART as artsy and as imaginative as YOU want it to be. It's not as if they had commissioned to you to color something for them. people like that have no imagination and that just don't understand and appreciate the magic that's in this world. I say PHOOEY on them Now I have a question for you and for the other people watching this video have you been inspired to add things to a picture that weren't already there let's say someone's wearing a shirt and you decide to maybe draw a design on the shirt or have something else put on there like their name or something on it?? That's something that I'm working I'm trying to master now. I've seen videos where adults have taken children's coloring books and added to them, but unfortunately the majority of what I've seen they completely destroyed it and took away the fun and Innocence from it. I just want to add things that are fun to it that keep it G-rated for anybody who would see it if you catch my drift. Adults don't need to ADULTIFY everything that they touch. LOVE the REAL smell of crayons. Some of the Crayons today don't have the true crayon smell

Very lovely picture!! Beautiful work! As for the art teacher, I would say she was being nitpicky... especially for a kindergarten art project. I had an art teacher in elementary who liked to criticize every child's artwork. I think she was just a very bitter person..lol. No matter what you did, it was never good enough for her. She also had a rule saying that you are never allowed to use black and white in a colored drawing/painting. She said you can't, because black and white are not colors. And she said absolutely no words are allowed in an art piece. I remember one time, in first grade, I was really proud of a city I drew. I loved the color pink and purple like a lot of little girls do. So the entire thing was done in different pinks and purples. And boy, was she angry. Lol!! She said that pink and purple don't go together. And I was a little mouthy and said "Why, yes they do. They're together on my project, and they are together on my shirt." She got so mad that I got sent to the hall. I don't even know if she was ever pleased at anyone's artwork, except for Van Gough's "Starry Night." That's all she ever talked about and compared things to. Lol.

Thank you so much Dea. I wonder if you used mineral spirits in between colors if that would improve the end result. I want to try that some time. Also did the master painters always use traditional colors. Maybe that is why teachers were so adamant about staying true to that belief. ART is the expression of our sole, so let it fly.
@DeaLenihan
@DeaLenihan 5 лет назад
I can't say for sure about all the masters, but I do know they were eternally on the lookout for brighter and new colors. Everything from bugs, arsenic, and gemstones were used. Some of our current colors are not as bright as the older ones because they were dangerous. And yes! OUR art is from OUR souls--so IMHO no one really has the right to be a critic! xo

Iv not used wax crayons like this since I was a kid ether, i might invest in some now after watching you. My art teach let me do what ever I was happy with,I did a green elephant with purple grass,she was plzed and said I had a great imagination. So I think your teacher was wrong to say things have to be realistic,because they don't have to be. Colour what ever makes you happy.

Hi Dea! I know I'm super late to your video, but I recently bought a set of Prismacolors and I've been watching all kinds of coloring videos. Of course, I still love Crayons as well! Just wanted to chime in on your Kindergarten teacher story. I'm currently student teaching and I was in a Kindergarten classroom last year. I so wish your teacher didn't criticize your picture for having the "wrong color" raindrops...that makes me so sad for little Kindergarten you! I absolutely do not think teachers of any grade should tell their students that their pictures are wrong or should be redone because of the color choices the students made (or any artistic choice, for that matter!). The only way I can see correcting a student's work like that is if they were given very specific directions to use a certain color or draw a particular picture, but even then, I think artistic choices should be celebrated, not shamed!

So sorry it took me soooo long to see this--sometimes the messages get buried and I have to look for them. SO glad you chimed in. Looking back and trying to see it from her point of view, I still think it was wrong. This was the coveted "Easel Time" and I excited waited for weeks. I do think teachers--especially teachers of the very young, should realize these tiny beings are sooo impressionable. I think you are going to be a great teacher--you are already an advocate for them! Thanks for the great comment and best of luck in your future teaching career. xo

About the teacher she should have given encouragement not negativity. I had a cookery teacher who always gave negative comments to my Food. Especially as my Mum hated pastry made with plain flour she always gave me self raising flour. I got in so much trouble for that. But I still use it to this day because the pastry tastes better 😂.

Thw Teacher missed a moment to teach. She could have said that it was a beautiful example of abstract art. She could have explained the difference between realism and abstract and made you feel good about being creative. Teachers have a different way they talk to young students now. Im so glad that my kid's teacher would not say something like that.

Well to me, you’re kindergarten teacher may had sounded a little harsh but is honest / blunt about your artwork but your kindergarten teacher is actually trying to give you constructive criticism and also implying that your learning how to draw real life and learn the art rules of real life physics and reality before you can draw freely and break the art rules and no your teacher doesn’t wanna discourage you to not have fun, creativity, and imagination in your kindergarten artwork. But what I believe that your teacher did wrong is that they should have taught you about constructive criticisms / suggestions, motivation versus shaming, and praises / compliments and how to deal with them as well as differentiate them which sometimes praises gets you not to learn and improve your artwork due to the if you’re satisfied enough with it then you would refuse to learn it further anymore and make your art improvement progression slow or stagnant or even worse, regressing in your art skill while good critiques does the exact opposite though they all depend on your choice to continue to improve or not and having motivation to keep on learning new things about creating art even your mistakes are one of your teachers.
