Weights cited in the video are the wet weights of the bike. Forgot to put that in.

I know some will scoff at the 196kg of the Himalayan, but don't forget, it comes standard in that weight with a centre stand, rear rack & front upper crash guards. All the things most people add to their bikes anyways. How many people go out and buy a 204kg Yamaha T7, add those very accessories and end up with a 220kg bike?. I bet the aftermarket will come to the diet rescue soon enough & if you're happy to live without a centre stand I bet that's 5kg gone before you've travelled a mile. I'm rather impressed with what Royal Enfield has pulled out of the hat.

I think the 452 hits the mark with enough power to actually ride on the highway and strong enough (frame & suspension) to actually use as an adventure bike. No silly plastics and bold new graphics.

@@retipserjayzoom to care about "finish" on a purpose built bike, is like caring about a scratch on a gun. It has an amazing and unique design and nothing more than necessary, it's actually a bit too good looking for how utilitarian it is.

I do a lot of very long distance adventure touring (on road and off road), spend weeks in the saddle at a time doing substantial distances daily, my most recent tour doing just shy of 5000 miles in 11 days of riding. My longest day crossing 10 countries in under 24 hours. Reliability, simplicity, and easy repairability (bodgeability?) is crucial for me as I can be far from garages and civilisation in areas where a broken bike could potentially lead to much worse (especially depending on weather conditions). For touring I currently use a slightly modified Euro 4 2021 411 Himalayan. Almost everything I love about the 411 Himalayan, they have ditched on the new 452. Now putting the styling aside which is a very personal preference (I love the classic/vintage styling of the 411, not a big fan of the generic modern styling of the new one), my biggest issues are: 1) ride by wire - can't think of a worse option for a true adventure bike, if anything goes wrong with the electrics you are well and truly stuffed (and trust me, on a tour, the electrics always find a way to go wrong), and I am predicting now that there will be part shortages for this and so many problems reported by customers. I'll stick to my cable throttle for touring, plus it gives you the flexibility to go carb, not to mention easily bodged to get you to civilisation, and literally anyone can repair a throttle cable. 2) liquid cooled engine - not a HUGE issue, although much like the electricals on the new Himalayan, I expect there to be a substantial number of manufacturing issues and teething issues for both customer and manufacturer for a few years (predicting recalls and lots of Himmy's at dealers sorting issues relating to the new engine). Royal Enfield does air cooled engines exceptionally well, they're simple and reliable, I'm not expecting that same simple and reliable experience here on the new Himalayan. 3) Shim under bucket valve adjustment - do your own service and maintenance? Expect quite a bit more complexity and frustration when it comes to checking and sorting your valve clearances, yes you'll get more mileage between checks, but you'll sure as hell need this in to a garage to work on this - or have to take it to a garage/dealer. The old Himalayan used screw and locknut which is far quicker and far simpler, you could basicaly do this by the road if you wanted to. The 411 Himalayan is basic and perhaps a little underpowered at stock, but do the simple TEC cam and sprocket upgrade and the bike is completely transformed. Also scrap the stock tyres and put on some Conti Escapes and you're unstoppable. But honestly, anyone who has owned a Himalayan or other Royal Enfield will tell you that the build quality isn't that fantastic, exposed cabling, dodgy welds, moisture and dust is able to get into your instrument cluster, if you have a tripper nav you'll know how awful they are functionally, and let's not get started on the compass on the pre-tripper units. You'd have more accuracy using your fuel gauge needle as a compass 😂 (I have a ball compass stuck on top of my Himalayan's) - so imagine now those same manufacturing facilities and same workers (411 manufacturing is coming to an end to make way for the 452) now producing bikes and engines which are a significant order of magnitude more complex than the 411. 100% guarantee that there are going to be major issues for a number of years to come. Norally may be singing the praises of the new Himalayan, and sure there are a lot great things about the new unit, but let's not forget that she is essentially backed by Royal Enfield and will have their directors on speed-dial, if anything goes wrong for her and her bike, they'll have a new one or someone sent to repair it within a few hours, you won't get that same level of care and service if anything happened to you and yours. And let's not forget that this is a paid brand endorsement, a free bike, paid flights and more. Hard to remain impartial when you're being treat like royalty. All that being said, I'm looking forward to seeing and trying the bike (hopefully at the NEC later this month), I hope my fears and predictions are proven wrong. But as someone who has worked in QA, testing and manufacturing around the globe for well over a decade, I expect my predictions will be accurate.

New water cooled motor with electronics.. that's a recipe for disaster. These are the things that cripple KTM for reliability so I wouldn't trust Royal Enfield to get it right first go since they have no experience in it before.
@SonOfDrogo

@@miketran4289 I don't mind the water cooling. Almost everyone wanted more power in their Himalayan. So, I don't understand why everyone is complaining now since it's probably impossible for a practical 450cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine to make >40hp and not burst into flames with the current technology. I agree with the electronics part, though. I don't understand why anyone would require riding modes on a 40hp bike. Just learn to handle it, ffs.

Thanks, once again, for some cutting edge news! As an older, "budget-minded" rider re-entering the dirt after years as a Harley humping weekend poseur wannabe, I have thoroughly enjoyed my '22 Pine Green Himi 411, especially the 3-year, unlimited mileage warranty. However, knowing that RE has this 452 waiting in the wings will make trading in the 411 less of a heartache if and when that time comes. Looked at the KTM 390 in '22, but just couldn't get past the reliability questions and the fact that it's parts didn't add up to an off-road capable beast of burden that could take whatever abuse I could dish out; admittedly not much at 61 and 20 or so Evel Kneivel-inspired broken bones and more strains, sprains, bruises, etc. to my discredit than I care to think about! Two wheels down, indeed! Royal Enfield is definitely making its mark in the world and in America! I have much faith in their products.

The Royal Enfield looks like it will be popular alright and best thing is that if it sells up a storm the other manufactures will be motivated to make the bikes so many people have been asking for for so long. Thanks for sharing that. I hope it's true I own a 2021 KTM 390 Adventure and the weight difference is the key ingredient that keeps me from switching to the 452. This brings them closer together, plus I believe the 452 gas tank is larger. The other consideration is the center of gravity. If the 452 has a lower center of gravity it will influence how difficult or easy it is to pick up. For example several years ago it was proven that the KTM 690 Enduro R took less effort to pick up than a crf250l due to it lower center of gravity.
@bwlyon
@bwlyon 7 месяцев назад
I think Royal Enfield made a giant leap forward with new 452. While I still prefer analog Speedo & Tach, I get the reasoning behind the new instrumentation. I like they kept seat height reasonable too. As far as weight goes, you can only lose so much weight with steel. You build an aluminum tank, frame, and swingarm and cost skyrockets. If I had to make one complaint, it would be not going to an 18” rear wheel and tire combo, and a center mounted brake light. I’m in the market for a 40-50 hp adventure bike or scrambler. The Triumph 400x and 452 Enfield are high on the list. May even buy one of each.

The thing with re is the weight is very down low. And surprisingly easy and friendly to ride. It's primary market is emerging markets where big bikes are a luxury and too expensive. Making it accessible to a lot of people who just want to go out there explore. For anyone wanting to pay more and want more than this, there are so many great options. Have to be honest - the weight on the Himalayan doesn't bother me too much because: Mainstand, luggage rack, metal tank (magnetic bags are the best), metal fairings for more luggage and protection, ~480km range per fill up.... All stuff I'm missing on my Fantic Caballero 500 right now, as soon as I want to travel somewhere. The Himalayan 452 will be the perfect small displacement travel bike, especially if you need storage room for camping equipment and ride along one or an other gnarly backroad, I can't see how KTM offers anything comparable, since they're quiet the spec sheet warriors

KTM should be coming out with the updated 390 Adv with the new 399cc motor and the new chassis, that they have introduced with the Gen-3 Duke 390. The main question is “WHEN”. As much as I am in love with the new Himalayan 452, I’d love to consider the upcoming KTM mainly due to it being significantly lighter in weight than the new Himalayan. The KLR is sort of the last man standing in its class, but its old rivals the F650GS and Tenere 660 absolutely smash the Himalayan 450 specs wise - both weighed about the same as thiz Himi whilst being more powerful and actually being screwed together propelry. The new Himalayan comes with Google Maps navigation, tubeless spoke wheels, etc. I think KTM seriously needs to consider these upgrades as well. We're nearing 2024. It's high time they gave us tech that actually is useful both on-road and off-road. Not to mention, low-end torque is not present on 390 adventure.

I have a 2023 390 Adventure and it's an awesome bike. I also own a 2014 CRF250L that I use for my off-road adventures so the 390 will mainly be used for backroads and day to day riding on the pavement. It's an incredible bike on pavement! Long term reliability is one of the things I question. I guess time will tell. If they beef up the suspension on the 390, that might be a great all-rounder.

*CFMOTO - is expected to unveil its 450MT adventure bike at the upcoming EICMA in Milan.* The 450MT will use CFMOTO's 450 parallel twin with 270 degree crank firing used in its 450SR sports bike and recently released 450NK naked. I suspect this motor is what was under development with KTM's now defunct 490 parallel twin, but now 450cc. The crankcase design looks and exhaust sounds like a mini 790/890. If it is anything like it's big brother, the 800MT, it will present as exceptional value for money with many 'accessories' already attached. Fingers crossed on final weight figure!

Himmy has a Rally (Summit?) version with a rally / single piece seat - should suit taller riders better than the 411. It's a also a few kilos lighter than the 411 which will probably be offset by the extra fuel! Not a light bike but should not be too bad if the weight distributed like the 411 which is easy to push around and lift off the ground.

Disappointed that KTM didn’t upgrade the 390 adventure alongside the new 390 duke with its completely new engine, suspension & frame. Europe has had the 390 SW since 2023 and it was just a wheel styling package, unless this has changed overall for 2024. The different with the RE is night & day, whilst the 390 adv KTM seems to be a box ticking exercise for the A2 market to try draw new riders into the brand, the RE seems like really their flagship product that they want to sell. Another point of note, the RE 196kg kerb weight is at 90% fuel load, and fully equipped with centre stand. KTMs kerb weights are often… more optimistic.

I was a little warry of the weight of the 452 (not that 420lbs is heavy) but there are some items that I think add weight that people end up adding after the fact that just don't get acknowledged, crash protection. If you took the stock crash protection and rear rack off the 452 I would wager that would shed close to 20lbs. Personally on rides where I am on longer faster roads I like a bit of weight (riding a 300 lb bike at 60mph is not fun on the road) Also, and I know it subjective but I think the current look of KTM road bikes are just plain ugly and it makes anyone over the age of 25 look like they are trying too hard to look cool.

@michiganmoto7687 7 месяцев назад
25? So that’s the age cutoff where your not allowed to look cool anymore? 😂😂 I think the only people who think the styling of a bike makes them look cool are immature young men. The rest of of just enjoy motorcycles for the experience they can provide, not how they make us look to others. I will agree that esthetic appeal is in the eye of the beholder but it’s far less about looks and more about how you feel when sitting on and riding the bike. Most people can tell right away if they feel a connection to a motorcycle just by throwing a leg over for the first time. If you pick a bike because you worry how it makes you look to others your missing out on the true spirit of riding.

Well i do like the looks of the Himalayan, but the weight was a real let down. But i guess thats not what they put their focus on. Like.the CB500X, is a budget bike, so is the Himalayan. Which i would hope the price will reflect. Having CRF300 power to weught ratio, i no longer consider that to be on the list of next bikes for me personally. Looks great though. What id like to know is what were all the spy shots of the more offroad looking bike that had the 390 engine in it. What was that bike? A 390R? Or did it fall apart like the 490 did. Still sick to my stomache over KTM killing my dream of the 490 unicorn. Starting to look as if i will have to put my creativity to work. By that I mean grabbing a frame and suspensiom that fits me. Then installing an engine that i like into it to create my own unicorn. Its either that, or wait for a few more years in hopes some manufacturer builds what all of us smaller riders have been asking for for countless yrs. Building my own is really starting to look more and more like what I will have to do. Being a Boeing machinist, it would not be hard at all to do. Just time consuming. Again....are you listening KTM? Hearing how the new 6 speed 452 handles fast road conditions, will be the BIG decider for sales! The 411 was a great bike, FOR THE PRICE, but if the new bike cannot CRUISE (not thrash it's guts out!) at 70-75 mph for 200+ miles, and retain it's BUDGET BIKE price tag, then many will question if the bike has the same future the old bike enjoyed! Personally, as long as the new bike can "do motorways" and other fast roads, AND come in at no more than £500 more than the old 411, I predict another WINNER from Royal Enfield! It is very likely this bike would squash all further noise around the demands for a 650 twin version, IF the 452 comes up trumps! With a Scrambler already being unofficially heralded, and the replies NOT being as congratulatory as they could be, could we be seeing the end of Royal Enfield's latest "honeymoon period"? They visuals on the "Bobber 650" weren't exactly inspiring either! (not exactly the "Shotgun" concept we were expecting?

@@miketran4289 hi mate, I strongly disagree. Had a 250 rally and while the 300 might be very slightly more powerful, it was seriously underpowered for 100km/h+ with lugagge. We all love to be on the dirt most of the time but the reality of adv touring, at least for me, is also long days on the road, specially if you only have one bike. On the Hondas it is triciker to put serious lugagge. Seat is uncomfortable for long hours, fuel tank is smaller. The suspension is seriously soft, but great with aftermarket (e.g. yss). In my opinion, the 300, specially the L, is a fantastic offroad oriented dual sport but far from being an all purpose do it all adv bike (including long asphalt stints). I believe they are just in different categories and the new Himmi competes with ktm390, cb500x, klr650, versys300x, himmi 400 and even 300 Rally but not the honda 300L. Excited for the new Himalayan! Have some reservations about the old model: Bit underpowered (for my fat arse anyway). Not roomy enough for taller riders (I'm 6'3"/190cm). Short service intervals: I do around 20.000km/year; valve clearance every 5000 km/6 months means I would have to get it serviced every three months! That's a deal breaker for me.. The new one addresses at least one of these things (power). If it manages the other two as well I'll pretty much have to get one!

I'm waiting for the Triumph 400x to arrive in my country and then saw this new Himalayan. I would still have to go with the 400x because the new Himalayan is just not going to be much fun in the twisties or switchbacks. But, as an adventure bike, this makes close to the bullseye and will probably make 30,000 dollar BMW's look silly on the trails. I think the new Himalayan will sell like crazy in India, they will not be able to make it fast enough. Now a real, credible ADV, just not the best everyday bike unless you live where the roads are very bad.

The power figures on the RE are with all the euro emissions garbage. I’ll be curious to see what it will be producing once uncorked. And compared to the KTM the RE makes torque much lower in the rev range making it better suited to slower speed technical terrain navigation. I’m a bit concerned that it’s designed to only fit shorter riders and will feel quite cramped for anyone over 6ft tall. I’m 6’2” and like the lightweight ADV category but don’t want to have to fold myself like an accordion to ride it. CFMOTO reportedly has a 450 ADV that looks much like the IBEX 800 which is due to launch in 2024. Kinda looks like what the Versys 300 should have been.
