Over the year there have been some new discoveries regarding Mii Brawlers side-B, Burning Dropkick! This video summarizes and explains some of these discoveries and advanced techs, as well as an edge-cancel-similar occurence, the "Phantom-Land-Refresh"!

The reason for the refresh is that BDK has a "grounded" and "aerial" version of the move. They aren't distinct enough animation wise to be discernable but the grounded one can clank/rebound vs other grounded hitboxes whereas the aerial doesn't (+ some other differences like the aerial one moving during startup while the grounded one doesn't). When you're close enough to the ground the move transitions into the grounded version and you are effectively on the ground (This probably also prevents Brawler from landing/stopping before an specific frame) as far as the game is concerned, but BDK can also transition into it's aerial version if you go over an edge. Also I know this is extremely situational and something that probably won't matter in 99% of games, but PLR happens before you go over an edge. It basically happens as soon as the hitbox comes out. While this might seem like it would never matter, it does mean that if you're hit during BDK you still refresh your stuff. A real game, useful example could be the same juggle scenario vs Cloud, if you BDK towards a platform and he chases you and U-Airs you before you actually land on the platform itself, you will still get all your resources back as long as you were less than about 1 full Mii Brawler height on top of the platform.

That the move becomes grounded is the obvious part, the real question is WHY does it become grounded? Brawler obviously touches the ground to regain his stuff, so BDK gaining grounded properties is a given, but why does this only happen to BDK? Why don't other movement specials do that? And if it's grounded, why can it suddenly go back to aerial without stopping at an edge? This can only happen if there's a discrepancy between two values, with one determining BDKs animation, and a different one determining Brawler current state, which is where the "model vs hurtbox" theory (the terminology is probably exactly the other way around but whatever thats not the point) comes from

@@Gaegel “Grounded” BDK travels in the air. So BDK probably has a “minimum height” before it is considered to be an “airborne” BDK so that you can have the different versions of it (with slightly different properties). What I am assuming is that this “minimum height” is purposely introduced into the attack to differentiate a grounded and aerial BDK, otherwise they would all be aerial BDKs. Not all specials have a different aerial version, and not all that do have one can transition to and from the versions. That’s a per special kind of thing. There are only a few sideways moving specials and most of them work the same on both the air and the ground. And even for those that do have different versions, we would have to check if they can transition between the versions Grounded BDK can go past edges without stopping, so if you go from aerial version to grounded version, just like a normal grounded version you would still be able to go through edges the same. Tbh I also believed it was the hurtbox vs model theory when I first saw the interaction, and it could very well be that. We can’t be sure of what’s happening without checking the code, but there doesn’t seem to be any other specials with an error between hurtbox and model, making it unlikely for this to be the only case in my opinion. There are though, a lot of examples of moves with different properties in the air and on the ground, and lot of example of moves that can switch freely between the 2 versions of the moves upon landing (or even upon being pushed into the air by a windbox, going from grounded to aerial version) The special thing that allows PLR would be that this is the only move that has those common properties + also travels horizontally allowing you to do air -> ground -> air (at least as far as we’ve tested, there might be others) At the end of the day, this is all just semantics tbh and irrelevant. If it was purposely introduced into the move in order to allow aerial vs grounded versions or if it is just a bug/miscalculation of “model vs hurtbox” the end result is the same: If you are below a certain height from the ground your BDK (and Brawler) is considered grounded while the move/Brawler keeps traveling like a normal grounded BDK would I was just responding to the part of the video that asked to comment below 😂

@@Zykrex well man you guys are brining back out the labber in me. There's another move that I know causes a triple jump- corrin's side b. Seems like it would follow the idea of a move that has a different grounded version than aerial, if you do it close to the ground you can get out a triple jump although I haven't been able to find much use for it yet. Maybe this could be something to lab?

how to use counter throw? It’s really good for high stock finishes, sometimes even becoming marth, one of the fastest in the game, stalling to recover, used as a getup option and a ton of stuff that would be great for you to go over

BDK is a much better move than I expected. I knew it was at the very least an alright move, but damn. Not like I hate it tho, Brawler is a fun character to verse, even if I main Ganon. Hope y'all Brawlers have fun optimizing your tech! :]

Since watching this vid I’ve been testing double jump shotput into bdk over the ledge to try and cover a lot of stuff when the opponent is offstage approaching ledge

You can sometimes triple jump just before hitting the ground after using the kick in feint jump, maybe it is similar to phantom-land -refresh

I tried to find something similar with feint jump, but I couldnt get anything edge specific :/ I think feintjumps triple jump is more a general down-b bug (moves like wolf reflect can also give a triple jump), but if feintjump is able to semi-edgecancel, that would be INSANE

I've always preferred BDK over suplex, sadly BDK is more of a recovery than a neutral/kill tool so it only really gets use if you aren't running faint jump

Having to b reverse BDK in any situation at all is the main reason I'm never using it. Cool video tho I hope better players than I can use it.

TBF both Suplex and Onslaught also get massive boosts from "wavebouncing" them. If you want to do them "optimally" you should be wavebouncing them in like 95% of cases.

@@MrStokes for sure I agree it feels more necessary, but I think that's because no-momentum BDK is kinda bad, so if you want to BDK in the direction you're not moving, it feels 100% necessary to do a Slingshot. Meanwhile Non-Reversed Suplex is still amazing so you don't really care as much. In reality Reverse Suplex vs Normal Suplex is a bigger upgrade than Slingshot BDK vs Maximum Momentum BDK.
