Advanced Bionics Cochlear Implant | New CI Connect for Bluetooth and 3D Implant Magnet! Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and Founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Phoenix Arizona, discusses Advanced Bionics' CI Connect accessory for Bluetooth with a Naida CI, and new 3D Implant Magnet that can be used in up to a 3 Tesla MRI machine!
Website: www.DrCliffAuD...
Clinic Website: www.AppliedHea...
Advanced Bionics, the manufacturer of the Naida Q90 Cochlear Implant, has recently made a few nice additions to their already impressive Cochlear Implant & Naida Processor. Originally, the Advanced Bionics T-Mic, the microphone that hangs in-front of your ear, was originally intended to improve microphone placement when using the telephone. While it did do this and do it well, using Bluetooth to stream directly from a cell phone is an even better option.
While the T-Mice remains, due to it's ability to utilize the power of the Pinna Effect, Advanced Bionics has developed the CI Connect to allow it's Naida processor to connect to any Bluetooth device. This means that you will be able to stream audio from nearly any Bluetooth device. This includes Phone Calls, Podcasts, Audio books, and RU-vid Videos.
The CI Connect is a tiny little attachment that can be placed on the bottom of any 170 battery, and converts your Naida Q90 into a Bluetooth Processor. Just pair it with your phone, or other Bluetooth enabled device, and you're all set. On phone calls, it picks up your voice and sends it to the other person.
The CI Connect does have a few limitations. First, you can only stream to one ear at a time. Second, it doesn't have a smartphone app for you to use to change programs, volume, etc.
The other new product that Advanced Bionics has rolled out is their new 3D Magnet for their Hi RES Ultra 3D Cochlear Implant. This magnet lets you receive up to a 3.0 Tesla MRI without requiring a splint or the need to surgically remove the magnet before the MRI. The magnet is comprised of 4 rotatable magnet rods encased in a revolving disc that allow the magnet to provide alignment with the MRI field in all 3 dimensions.
The Magnet seems like a minor improvement to the Hi RES Ultra Cochlear Implant, but it is definitely worth while, especially if you find yourself needing an implant at some point in the future. However, while it is safe to do an MRI with the magnet in place, the magnet could still impede imaging capabilities in the are of the magnet.
Overall, the CI Connect and the Ultra 3D Magnet are both nice additions to the Advanced Bionics offerings and a LOT of AB users should be excited about these new features.

It should be noted that you could always stream bluetooth to the Q70/Q90 utilizing the Phonak ComPilot and do so in true stereo. It also allowed you to use a cell phone without having to hold it to your ear. The CI Connect removes that device from having to be worn. I've used both and prefer the sound from the ComPilot.

Hey Steve, that is the point of the whole video.

Do the Compilot and CI connect sound different? or are there any significant differences? I’m a Q90 user deciding between the Compilot and the CI connect. The compilot works perfectly with my Q90, but I haven’t tried CI connect yet. My local AB representative said I have to wait until the CI connect is approved in my region.

What I would love to see is the journey from your doctor saying "I don't think conventional hearing aids are going to help you. You may want to consider Cochlear Implants." The process, the various "exams" and not to mention the out of pocket costs not covered by insurance. I seem to get the Texas Two Step. I have not got used to "It Depends", I can't help it but when I hear that I think of the adult diapers.

This is actually the processor and implant I am looking to get. I am alarmed at how fast my hearing is deteriorating and how little anyone at the insurance Company seems to care at all. I have found a resource here in Texas to help (the Texas Workforce Commission if anyone out there is wondering, and they also assist with hearing aids too). But best case scenario I am looking at getting the implementation done in early to mid March 2020.. but as for now it's a massive struggle to hear on the phone and in wide open space like a store...

Hey Dr. Cliff, thank you so much for making these videos! I really hope youtube makes it worth your time. Question unrelated to CIs, generally what do you recommend in terms of premium hearing aid options, if a patient is candidate for CROS but ENT recommends a hearing aid for the impaired ear? To me, some of the binaural environmental features and ear to ear comms of ReSound linx quattro and Phonak Audeo Marvel seem like a decent compromise. Kind of wondering if these are programmable enough to allow for compensation of the impaired ear while still amplifying sound in that ear.

Please note that the removal of the magnet is contraindicated for HiRes Ultra 3D imlant. Although 3D does not require bandaging procedure, it will always create an artifact. Greetings from Lithuania!

I think it was very informative, speaking a little slower might help a lot! Also, would like to know which battery type that Bluetooth/ everything processors that attaches to the battery is called! Got my implant a few days ago, needed a stronger magnet , got a bigger one, works better. Have another visit to Johns Hopkins Thursday, want the info so I can see about getting just what you talked about! Again Thank you!

Great information, but can I please make a suggestion? Your speech is clear, but it would help if you slowed down just a bit. Remember who your audience is!! I am glad to have found your videos in advance of my upcoming assessment. Thank-you.

I have problem in understanding incoming calls on my IPhone 11 ProMax through the cochlear processor. The calls sound are gibberish and not understandable. Consultants at Cochlear in Colorado tried different processors without success. Currently I am using Apple’s AirPods Pro to overcome this limitation. I have no problem in handling landline speaker phone calls even without a cochlear processor. My audiologist and doctor state that this problem is unique to few patients. If I understand your above presentation Advance Bionic magnet attachment to my processor together with TCoil may help me to listen incoming calls directly to my Iphone. I will appreciate if you would evaluate my situation and advise the steps I need to take to get full benefit of the Cochlear Implant. THANKS
