11:55 -- Aaaaactually, Smart Objects to the rescue! Work with Adjustment Layers in Lab mode, select ALL of your layers including the original BG, convert everything to a Smart Object, and switch your project to RGB mode. You can carry on WITHOUT losing any of the Lab color construct nestled within the Smart Object. 😎

See, this is why I love the comments! I was not aware of this at all. I've gotta jump in and check this technique out ASAP! I might even add this to a new tutorial that I'm working on. THANK YOU FOR SHARING! 🔥

nice video, Interesting way of working with lab. I usually just duplicate and convert the image to LAB, make all of my color adjustments and bring it back to my original image. But this is a great way to keep all of the Adjustment layers. Great video!

That was an excellent tut. I love learning how to use PS tools and the whole infogram thing was so interesting. I always seem to have a number of 'Oh that's cool' moments when watching your tut's the whole 11x11 thing with the picker is something I completely missed. I've been basically teaching myself how to use PS over the last 2 years via tut's and it always amazes me how many different ways you can perform any task and how much each tool can do. I've been using LAB for a while at the start of my edits to colour correct. I work with a lot of very dark screencaps and I find it's the best way to initially pull out a more natural colour and details that are hiding before working with CRW. I normally convert to LAB use curves and then turn it into a SMART object before converting back to RGB without flattening and merging. I can always go back and edit contents, I've never noticed an issue with this. Is there a reason why I shouldn't be doing it or that may cause problems with the psd?

Which colour background will be best to shoot headshots to all skin tones to, for then change it to any colour, vibrant ones included? (I have used an off white or grey, but would like to know your opinion!). Thank you!

hey there....I tried using this technique albeit the photo is def not studio quality and i'm trying to change the color of background(wall) but when I apply the refine edge brush I don't seem to get a clean selection like you do in this video. idk if it has to do with my 2012 mac mini lol or what and I'm using photoshop 2020....any insight would be appreciated..!

just a little FYI, there is a huge difference between working in LAB mode and working with adjustment layers in RGB. LAB does not saturate the colors in the darker areas whereas RGB does. the reason for that is because LAB has it's own Light channel. Anyhow, keep up the great work and thanks for sharing your techniques! cheers!

I am just starting to learn LAB color space and did not realize you could do this in RGB which is interesting. I would love to see the same tutorial in LAB mode to see the difference. Wouldn't it be possible to achieve the background change in LAB mode without using a mask? And therefore you wouldn't have any fringing around the hair or reflections from the original color on the model. I think I have seen that done somewhere..... There are not many detailed and good tutorials on youtube on LAB. Thanks for the expertise!
@tutvid

I love your detail knowledge of Photoshop. Like here with Colours and all.. But it's kind of hard to grasp everything you teach here.. Like with LAB and RGb.. I didn't get to use lab when working with Colours.. You did it.. I just want to know why you went from RGb to lab.. Is there any specific used for lab than RGb and cmyk.. If there is what is it.. Sorry but lot in my table.. Please answer tutvid

You can convert the image to Lab color without flatting the image. Lab color matches the EXACT color so you don't need to tweak it
@tutvid
@tutvid 7 лет назад
It's not the initial conversion to LAB that I was concerned about. When the changes get made in LAB and then you convert back to RGB, Photoshop wants all Adjustment layers to be flattened. There are a couple people in the comments who have suggested using Smart Objects and that will allow you to keep layer structure, etc... even after converting from LAB to RGB again. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough 👌

Why not just desaturate the background and add color opacity layer over that? Tends to work pretty well and is MUCH faster though maybe not quite as accurate.
@tutvid
@tutvid 7 лет назад
Because of the accuracy. There are SO many ways to change colors, but to get an exact color and maintain the shadows and highlights and contrast is what seems to be the toughest. Really glad you posted another technique here, though! Thanks 🍻🍻
@CaryHawkins
@CaryHawkins 7 лет назад
Okay, if you desaturate and have a levels layer adjustment though, you can get really close really fast. Usually when you desaturate, the highs aren't high enough, and the lows aren't low enough. I like this method too and will keep it in my repertoire. I figure it's more for the clients like GE or McDonald's who are very particular. For the average Joe client, speed is probably more important than super accuracy. Good video! Thanks for the reply!
