Yep, always alternatives. You can even use Blender if you want or rizomuv or other software.

Store page doesn't give specifics on how its structured. Is it time lapsed narration giving tips on advanced techniques or is it step by step. Either way I'll pick it up looks like a killer deal.

incredibly detailed and talented work but the end product looks like overgreebled, incoherent, generic scifi nonsense. If you toned the detail of the character down a lot then it would be more memorable and unique

You can definitely give it a try, but there'll be many specific techniques shown in Zbrush that do not necessarily translate to Blender. If you have advanced sculpting skills in Blender, you may be able to make it work though.
