At 5:45, you adjusted the speed to 200 to attain the mid tone (her chin), then you metered her hand and fortunately it was within the range. What to do if her hand was way too dark and lost details? Should she move a bit to get more light? Would this cause her chin to be over-exposed by changing the position? In actual scene, chances are chin is well exposed, but hand under exposed, but we need both. How could you advise? Thanks a lot in advance.

The more deeper and clearly in explanation about mettering and exposing. I'm owner of one APSC Fujifilm (expectacular due to the live histogram during de exposing and mettering pre process) but the ergonomic of the nikon cameras push me to buy one camera full frame. Maybe 810 or 850 . My interest (almost semi professional) are related to urban (street serious) and portrait expontaneous photography. And my questions is about metering. An excellent exposition on the use of spot metering - the best I've seen. Small correction: the "evaluative" metering ( at least on the Nikon matrix metering system) is not a a simple averaging of light intensity in several parts of the scene. Rather, both the intensity and relative pattern of those measurements is compared to a stored record of many patterns which are associated with common types of scenes. The meter picks an exposure based on the associated pattern in memory. So for example, a landscape with a large percentage of bright sky and a darker foreground would average to an underexposure. However, the matrix metering would "recognize" the excess of bright sky and adjust the overall exposure to compensate. Of course, if the meter guesses wrong, your screwed, which is why you need to understand the lessons shown here.

Totally true. The Matrix and Evaluative metering of modern cameras are more than average. But we tried to keep it simple for beginners, so that they can go into the Advanced levels. confused? what happens when you step back from the model, wouldn't the spot metering changes because your no longer on her cheek but on her full figure. Wouldn't the metering change? How do you keep it from changing from the spot metering you had on her cheek. Does a photographer have to keep pressure on the button to keep it from changing?

Hmm, I find it weird when people say things like 'as long as your subject is in midtone you're fine' - which is a massive oversimplification. Also, midtone is 18% middle grey, it IS a line, a specific exposure. This is a good video, but missing things for sure.
