Thank you Andrew, yes I use true stops and place priority on the aperture value as well. Easier to calculate, even for the DOF at 1/3 difference it's too little to differentiate.

That's a really good idea! With post-processing always being used nowadays, full stops get everything close enough. I could never see the difference a third stop makes, anyway. Thanks!

Hi, would you recommend changing the default settings in your camera to true stops? ( Instead of the usual 1/3 stops)

We use true stops to calculate light as it is easier to memorize. As for camera settings whether to set it to true stop increment, as pointed out in certain situation when we want 1/3 of stop to be added / subtracted, compensation must be made else where, either by ISO or shutter, or aperture. IMO it is a creative process, and we always try out what works best to get that shots that we have envisioned. Happy shooting!

I don't think using "untrue" stops is a big deal at all. I use f/3.2, 3.5 all the time and sometimes f/5 and f/7.1, and I have absolutely no difficulties whatsoever adjusting my exposures. I can calculate 1/3 or full stop increments quite easily. It has nothing to do with professional lighting. Many incredible photographers shoot in "untrue" stops. Besides, a stop either way on any camera is 3 clicks of the dial. It's that simple. People should do what works for them and not marry themselves solely to true f/stops. And what's this nonsense about we should only change our light in full stops? That's insane to teach people. You use WHATEVER increments of light you need. Not only sometimes we need 1/3 or 2/3 stop changes; we need them a lot. You use whatever amount of light you need for the shots. And 2/3 of a stop more or less light is only imperceptible if you're blind because that's a significant visual difference in exposure. I can tell you that I have more than a fair idea of what the addition of 1/3 or 2/3 of a stop approximately looks like. You do it for a long time and you just get used to what that looks like. I usually like your vids but this one I cannot get behind. Have a great day, though.

Hmm I disagree that we only perceive true stops. Maybe if you're evaluating on the back of a camera but on my monitor back home when I am doing post (even on a laptop monitor) I can tell the difference down to .2 stops of exposure changes so if something is a little off and I need to adjust I will make .2 stop adjustments in post. Now at the time of shooting if I am only using the back of my camera and I am not shooting tethered then maybe true stops is better and then can fine tune in post but I can perceive if something is a third of a stop over or under.

So would I be correct in assuming (according to this cheat sheet) that if I use 100 ISO, I need to either brighten the flash by 1 true stop or open the f stop by 1 true stop but keep the distances?

@@BeyondPhotography ALL flashes have different max outputs WHY else do you buy better ones ie more power, so any fraction of output will all be different power If I have a 200W output next to a 600W how can 1/2 power be the same??? One will be at 100W the pother will be at 300W if your talking hotshot flash you did not say that but all have different guide numbers so same applies.

@@chazM6116 and try it.... measure it someday. You will be surprised like i was 5 years ago. Try measure Canon vs Nikon vs Yougnou vs Godox at 2 or 3 feet at 1/8 and hold a light meter to them. I know you won't believe me. But, really, go try it. I teach photography everyday and i was surprised too.

@@chazM6116 i may not hv said hotshoe flash in THIS video. But i alwys say so in almost all my videos. Sorry. So, remember, lighters cheat sheet ONLY works for hotshoe flashes of almost All brands. Surely not studio strobes, that goes without saying, bcos of watt/s all being different.
