I've watched enough of these to where my thoughts are in Simon's voice when I'm working sudoku puzzles... Makes me sound smarter to myself so I'm okay with it.

In 2007, Sue couldn't find printed Sudoku puzzles that were challenging enough. Also, most printed puzzles from the grocery store are ugly. So, I wrote a little program that generates puzzles that look good, but also (hopefully) provide a good solving experience, neither too easy or difficult. I hand select the best and print them for her. I anyone wants more, let me know.

Same here, title gave it away. Noticed 2 different bent triples in my solve at a similar stage.

I really prefer how you use bent triples over y-wing (and bent quadruples, quintuples, ... instead of sue de coq) as it gives much more to the imagination of where the logic/problem is situated. I think it's really good you stick with terms that visualize problems to those learning Sudoku. Time to make this!

I do not know the first thing about cryptic crosswords or their difference from normal ones that my aunts used to solve when I was a wee lass. Do you guys have an intro sequence like with the sudoku's? Or could Mark give us a place to start in learning the hows and if, say, we should have a dictionary at our side to help. Gave up after thirty minutes... kept trying to make empty rectangles and never found your bent-triple hint from the video :(

Wow... I'm kind of happy with myself actually. I got just as far as Simon on my own at the point he finds the bent triple and explains what it implies. I hadn't made any mistakes, I just didn't know about bent triples. Now I know. So *that* means, if I had known, I would have started "cooking like gas" all on my own. Lol.

18 minutes roughly got me to where you found the first bend triple. Still new at solving so didn't really know what to look for and got stuck there. Explanation helped tremendously. Found the second bend triple on my own. Solve was easy from there. Total time was just under 30 minutes.

(Before Simon begins) I found one bent triple (Y-wing) and several busted triples (worth the cost of their individual digits). I'm stuck now. I'll probably discover a pencil-mark or easily placed digit that I've missed. My previous puzzle, I got stuck only because I apparently didn't complete pencil-marking 9s. 13:50 I'm staring at the bent triple (Y-wing) that I found earlier, 279. Your mouse is nowhere near it, so I wonder if it's the same one. (10 seconds later.) I was right. It's a different triple that I didn't spot. And it will unwind the 279 bent triple. 15:10 Actually three Y-wings. The one I found on my own turned out useless.

Very nice puzzle, I found the first bent triple, but not the second, because it did not occur to me that there was a square that saw both 9's. Still learning, great video. I would like to see more from Mike Halderman. Gene

Found a bent triple that gave me some progress, but It didn't solve the whole thing and in the end I just guessed. (After finding another bent triple that didn't progress the puzzle, not to mention a couple more where the affected cell(s) were already solved.) Curious what I missed. Edit: Ohh, I did find that second bent triple but simply overlooked that the 79 cell is affected by it. (For anyone curious, the one I found that didn't progress the puzzle for me was r3c1, r3c7 and r5c1, eliminating a 2 from r5c7.) Likely would have benefited by walking away and coming back later. Need more practice.

I got halfway through and then made a guess at the solution to the 379 triple in the top left box, followed it through, it turned out to be correct, and I missed all the cool logic. Karma.

Never saw the y wings, I guess that's my new ceiling. Excellent puzzle and very surprised to learn that it was computer generated by Mike whose clearly doing something that most computer generators are not.

so bent triple and y wing is the same thing right? I like these, I understand the logic behind y wings, but for some reason the logic for xyz wings does not fit in my head 😣

I'll note the puzzle isn't quite symmetrical as there's no given in cell 7,2. Not sure if this is a transcription error or just how the puzzle is. Obviously it's solvable without that digit.

That is how it was meant to be. I try to make them mostly-symmetrical, but with the minimum number of givens to have a unique solution.

Bit odd as not fully related to the video... But does anyone know if their Classic Sudoku app allows the double notation like their web app? Basically corner and center notation.

It does, but you have to go into options to enable it. options>gameplay, press next and there is a page with the option for double notation.

It's not a total symmetry as the position r7c2 did not have a clue. And I'm wondering why not as if you put that 7 in there as a given this sudoku is as hard as it is without it.

26:12, but I bifurcated. Now to see how Simon does it. Edit: Man, I went completely differently on this one! When Simon saw his first bent triple, I was using the 7s in the central box to resolve the 7s in column 3.

Is the “bent triple” technique the same as an XY wing?

Effectively, yes. The only difference is in the name. The Bent Triple is an XY-wing where one of the wings shares a 3x3 box with the "pivot" square. The XY-wing is a *really* bent triple where the bend takes the other wing out of its box.

it may looks hard, but this isnt hard sudoku..xy just 2 times...cmon (i mean for some who knows karate=) WXYZ-wing, thats shit im tryin to find,=) never did..What about 3d medusa (not even trying, coss im whey to stupid yet)..Im playin "sudoku daily" (android phone) on level devious, and there are sudokus litlle bit over me..on this medium level
