Bill Lowen has perfected swimming a jig for bass through decades of trial and error fishing tournaments and fun fishing all over the country. He offers a lot of great tips for how to work a swim jig, choosing the right weight, using trailers to give it the right buoyancy, and a lot more.
Bill demonstrates a lot of what he has learned and will save you a ton of time if you are wanting to get better with a swim jig . He catches bass after bass on an early spring cold front day in south Louisiana while explaining many of the nuances he has figured out to catch more bass.

Nice feature W2F! Bill Lowen is one of the most underrated pros and yet he's one of the most consistent anglers on the tour. He almost always cash's a check and has quietly gone well over $1 million in lifetime earnings.

I fish a swim jig 75% of time. Love it! Actually I use the SK Denny Brauer Structure Jig. Not sold as a “swim jig” but the cobra head wobbles and adds extra action. Plus you can instantly switch from swimming it to dragging through cover. 👍🏻

Awesome video subscribed ! I feel you on the incidental learning of swimming a jig vs traditional fishing a jig I was in a tournament on mark twain lake i couldnt get hit on a spinner bait which is what i had done well on in practice so i put on a blk n blue strike king bitsy bug jig an chompers trailer also blk n blue with blue flk An started flipping it still no luck but on one cast once i got past my target i pitched to i started burning it back to the boat to hit the next peice of structure An out of nowhere boom ! 2lber smacks it So i throw back in there did the same thing but started reeling it sooner Rather than letting it drop an fall an work it like a standard jig n plastic or pork But ever since then I now use an actual swim jig with swim jig head style since the head can make a diffrence based on cover type

@douglas schmidt- When I try to explain bass movement from one place to another, I always allude to a cat crossing a room full of furniture. The cat doesn't cross the center of the room- it goes from doorway to rocking chair to ottoman to sofa to the other doorway, using "structure" the entire way. Anyone who's had a cat has seen it.

My personal experience: The swim jig bite is very subtle for me. Almost feels like your bumping a lily pad. I often get em to “bump” it 1-2 times before they commit, but most times they are just “there”. As if you just feel their weight. It’s not like a crank bait or spinner bait where they seem to smash it. Also my experience, hook-up ratio is near 100% over course of 8 years. My difference with Bill, I have a smooth leaning hook set.
@murphroberts4891
@murphroberts4891 3 года назад
After 9 months of no reply, I'm going to assume none is coming. Your personel experience doesn't tell us where your personal experience comes from or what the water color and temperature is when you're having your personal experience. Since we have no further information, I'm going to assume (again) and say you are some distance North of where Bill and I are. Bass that are wearing long johns and overcoats don't typically get as aggressive as they do around here, as they are cold blooded creatures who's metabolism and activity is directly relative to the temperature of the water they live in. Then, again, they don't need to be as aggressive because everything around them is also moving in slow motion. When the water warms- around here it gets into the 90s- they can be quite aggressive and competitive or food. But they can also be lethargic due to the temperature's (and dying vegetation) depleting the oxygen in the water. If your hookset technique gets the results you say it does, there's no reason to change. As touring tournament competitors, we run into a variety of conditions that influence all aspects of the way we fish. The hard part is determining what the fish, on a particular body of water, want. Two bodies of water may be geographically near each other and vastly different in color, water temperature, forage availability, vegetation, etc. So you go there and take/make an "educated guess".

@@LeatherNeck1833 Completely true,1833. Hooking the fish is pointless if he hangs you up in the weeds. A few things I came away from this video with: I think I do, but I'll concentrate on making those follow-up casts. Meanwhile, I'm separating out my 3:1 and other slower reels and dedicating my 5:1 and 7:1s to this kind of fishing. I also think sweeping a longer rod helps keep up with the fish. You mentioned your "Menace"- which I assume is your trailer. But you don't bother to elaborate. You also make the statement that you need to sit down and "Paint your string" but you don't bother to do it or explain the statement. I've blackened my line with a Sharpie or similar marker in clear (Colorado River) water, so again, I assume that's what you mean. The people who come to watch videos like this generally come to learn from them. If we were here strictly for entertainment purposes, it wouldn't be an issue. But you guys leave out a lot of an awful lot of stuff that would be extremely insightful. I don't mean y'all need to become another Bill Dance, and create a continuous commercial for your sponsor's products (one Bill Dance is more than enough).
