Great video Wheeler. I am addicted to the swim jig. I have trouble trying other presentations for too long when that jigs does so well for me here in MN. I even sometimes use a snap swivel when I am around pike, it helps me from losing so many lures to those sharks. Seems to create just enough distance from the line that it doesn't end up in their teeth. I am sure I don't get as many bass hitting it, but it saves me money. If i was in a tourney i would have trouble justifying that philosophy. Thank you sir, and love watching your videos and watching you compete. Congrats on a phenomenal year!! Cheers.

Great video as always and I will be adding your techniques to my repertoire. I have only ever straight retrieved a swim jig with 20+ # floro or 30+ # braid on a 7'3 to 7'6 MH with success. In the past, I would use a swim jig with a craw style trailer, but this year I have started using Paddle tail and zako swimbait style trailer.

Awesome video. I really needed this video. Ty for going into deep detail. I use a swim jig with a keitech swim bait for smallies in rivers or whenever I can find current over rocks and crawl it ever so painfully slow. I caught 4 small jaws over 4lbs last year in the West fork river here in West by God Virginia. That's a big smallie around these parts and not a huge river. Thanks again for the info. I had often wondered about the Alabama shake.

For shallower dirty water one technique i like to use is a 3/8 to 1/2 once darker colored (black/blue or balck/green) swim jig. i trim the skirt so on the pause it flares more agrresively and fish it similerly to a crank bait. I skip it under or through thick cover to the bank if possible and Immediately start the retrieve reeling at a medium to fast paste to keep it just off the bottom the key is to direct the bait so it rams into any available cover. Doing so makes the bait flare and change direction Like a crankbait and thats when ur strikes will happen.

I strongly agree with a) the paca craw or baby paca trailer, they are amazing, great on swim jigs, best on bladed jigs like the jackhammer! It’s the hallow body maybe. And B) i always super glue them in place and they stay put until they are beat! don’t glue the skirt tails

Jacob you got any tips for Swim Jig techniques and setups in Stained muddy water? Thanks
@mattthomen1608
@mattthomen1608 2 года назад
I use a few different swim jigs, I like the old school, strikeking sexyshad down here in florida,and blk blue both 1/4 and 3/8.i use the gambler swim jigs w the braid, and the sk jigs with floro 15 lb for clear open water. I use yum cristie craw for the craw trailer, and a flat top boot tail swim at for the swim trailer. Both can be cut down for matching up bait size. I prefer the floro if it's Brite out in stained or clear water, and the single layer skirt has better Secondary action with the shake...now the gambler jig has starflash round ru ber skirt that flares more like a regular full skirted jig, and with a agressive paddle tail w flat top creates more jig skirt pulsing ,and flaring. I don't trim out the inner skirt. For this setup I want the bulkier profile to look like a big pan fish or brim.and this jig draws big strikes! Less bites. And I fish these on a 7ft1 med hvy w a 6 to 1 reel for deep stuff, and 7to1 or higher for hvy cover,or around grass mats or open holes.retreives I keep simple, the cast and reel w rod tip shake,and the pump and glide w a few quick reels then kill it,which I use in edges of shade and Reed cover,or ambush points or pads and pockets.the craw trailer I use around rock and wood more to emulate a craw.and the swimbait is for bumping into padstems,or cover to create the reaction strikes. Great bait for when they go back.out to secondary points to recover after spawn, even shallow ponds have them pushed out deeper or mid lake. I find them where the contours first drop from.a shallow feeding flat to open water.or just outside the grass edges or elbows of the bank dropping off to deeper water. Edges are the important areas to target in small ponds with little or no cover.if I can dupe em on just a swimbait I'll do that to fish faster w winder. Conditions and use the vmc ballhead to a paddletail swimbait in 1/4 and 1/2. Works when it's got more surface chop and cloudy Conditions. The faster fall gives no time to inspect the offering, and flees like a escaped fish.

Good stuff! I started to get comfortable with a swim jig last year. Scattered weeds, weed lines, ledges, and deep docks. I usually bulk up the profile in staind water to displace more water. In clear water here in Michigan, white with a 3.8 or 4.2, has caught a ton of big bass, smallmouth and largemouth! Skirted jigs I prefer braid, everything else is fluorocarbon, 12-17 lbs.
