There is a chance you're doing the topspin forehands and backhands incorrectly when you're receiving faster balls in your tennis game.
You may be "doing" the topspin technique / movement the way you were taught in the beginning.
You learned that you need to brush up almost vertically on the back side of the ball in order to make it spin.
And sure, that worked at the beginning and when you hit slower forehands and backhands.
You engaged your forearm and wrist and moved the racket up very steeply on the backside of the ball and made it spin.
But when you received a faster ball and you still tried to apply topspin that way, you hit a lot of mishits and short balls.
You may be thinking that you just need to practice more and that the mishits will eventually go away but that's not the case.
You actually need to apply topspin differently where you don't "do it" but you "make it happen".
You make it happen by simply swinging in a more shallow swing path and letting the swing path apply topspin to the tennis ball.

Such a phenomenal clarification of doing vs making topspin happen. The crazy thing is that this is the fourth time I've watched this video and only now did it click for me.

I started playing tennis six week ago and people in my club tells me I'm about USTA 3.0. They are shocked to hear that I learnt the game watching your videos and without actual lessons. I may need a private lesson someday but I want to thank you for teaching me how to play. IMHO, you do a best job in explaining tennis among many on RU-vid.

This is EXACTLY the video I needed! I am definitely guilty of trying impart topspin on my shots very intentionally, and just like you said, I often get a lot of miss hits when the shots speed up (either framing the shot or hitting a really shallow and loopy shot)

This last tip about topspin has been invaluable for me, thanks Tom! I was really suffering from the "fabricated topspin style" and from using too much my forearm.. All of your videos are unique and useful but this for me was a true revelation! Hope to see more and more material from you soon! (I also appreciate the fact that you produce a video only when you have something interesting to say, and not just for the sake of pumping out content...)

I've spent quite a lot of money doing private lessons & still don't have a forehand; didn't even learn anything about topspin. I just watched 2 of your videos (including this one) & I learn more about topspin forehand than I ever knew before. Thanks a million; you're a great coach. Really hope some day I'll be able to do some private lessons with you. I've watched many tennis videos on RU-vid & you're the best I've seen. Keep it up.

@ArmedFerrett

its probably due to your racquet face and/or follow through. Make sure you are following all the way through up at least shoulder level. To force this you could tuck your chin in your shoulder holding the racquet. Also you should look into taking some clinics or private lessons and explain to the instructor that you want more top spin and they can make on the spot corrections. Sometimes you may "feel" you are doing it like the video but in reality you are not.

I need this video in my life and I will come back to it over and over again. I was doing exactly the wrong thing trying to pull up on a fast ball and I either frame it or hit super short ball in matches, than i magnify the mistake my trying to brush up even faster and frame it even more. The vicious cycle continue and I end up hitting short ball all day and got push back even further back and lose lots of matches like that against similar level player.

I also find that a lower ball, like a slower ball, is easier to hit up on more than a higher ball, or faster ball. When the ball is a bit higher, I find I need a shallower, flatter swing path. Good lesson.

You saved my forehand. Thx. I came back from a couple days without tennis and my forehand, my weapon, was total shit. Now I think I figured out why. I tried to spin the ball with this steep upward motion, which I was used to 2-3 years ago and by using it I had now length control, framed that many shots and now I know why. Btw I figured out how to time the shot with the steeper angel, and got like 4500-5500 rpm and forehands launching of my stringbed with extreme height, spin and little pace... Thank you very much! Would I've seen this video 5 days ago, I had won the tournament I played this weekend... Dammit

I watched another youtube video that proposes that that federer is able to hit the ball with so much spin and that he is able to do this by going across the ball in the last micro second. So the resulting spin is mixture of both top spin and side spin. The tutor said the arm and the wrist can be more actively engaged which allows the raquet to more vigorously work the ball. Do you agree?

This is awesome. Exactly what I been looking for. Spent so much time focusing on forearm and wrist for topspin, that I developed an ugly inefficient constantly shanking forehand which I still have, since its hard to untrain. Can you direct to other videos you have to compliment this that get into the fundamental "action" to create topspin, separate from the "additional" actions that can be added (like using the forearm) to the fundamental action. Thanks again!

@feeltennis
@feeltennis 7 лет назад
Hi Darren, you are to think more about path through the ball instead of trying to spin it with your wrist in a very "artificial" way. The spin will just happen as a result of your swing path.
@audiopluginz6126
@audiopluginz6126 3 года назад
Mr Tomaz, I'm having trouble implementing this technique in my own games. For fast balls I usually stand 8 or more feet behind the baseline similar to what Nadal does, and find it easier to return these balls when striking them after they have already started on their downward flight. I usually use a low to high swing path when doing this, and find the closer to the baseline I get the more balls I miss hit or completely skank . Should I stick to what I have been doing or continue trying to master these topspin techniques? I'm 6 feet 9 inches tall by the way and standing further back makes me lose a good amount of points on slices and backspin balls dropping in front. Thanks for your time. Steve

Great video, thx!! Make the spin happen. Same concept at the volley. There also we create a passive backward spin while we go into the ball with an open racket face. In contrast to the drop shot - there we create a active backward spin. Hope Im right Tomaz;-)

I have been struggling with my forehand for years. Before, I often hit balls out of court, especially in the games. So, I need to hit the balls softly, saving my power a lot. But I really hate that way. I want my powerful big forehand striking my opponents' court like top players showing us. Then, I realized that I need more the top-spin on my forehand and changed my grip from the eastern to the semi-western, finally to the full-western grip currently. However, my forehand still hit balls out at some decisive moments in the games, when I hit the balls harder. Usually, I don't apply the traditional forehand, the low to high up on the shoulder but the modern forehand, the "Wiper swing". Some trainers force me the traditional way but I don't want to do the way. Because I want to hit the balls like Djokovic, Nishikori and other players who are applying the modern forehand. I have no idea what are wrong in my forehand, grip? swing? swing speed? contact point? I appreciate if you would advice me on how to make the powerful big forehand without hitting balls outside of court.
