i got an old crazy shad in that same color without the props; i kinda use it as an in between popper& walker since its weighted to set upright. For props' I throw old devils' horse baits- man they still produce. My pop actually taught me that twitch- pop, swim-twitch w/that old rapala. great stuff.

I like to use the Rapala J-9 as a wake bait. For some reason early in the year it simply KILLS! It is the second best top water I use. Nothing holds a candle to a clear Zara puppy. It catches Spots, largemouth, hybrids, and stripers. They hit it so danged hard I have caught 2 fish at the same time on one lure many times. The tiny torpedo has it's place as well. Especially when they are feeding top water and dive down to chase the shad back up. I can "pull" them up with the blade on the back then cast back into them with the puppy. Nothing beats the top water bite. The explosion as they hit it with an attitude gets anyone's blood pumping!

Some of my biggest bites have come on a popper this year. Usually the bass are decent sized also. 2 of my 3 biggest bass have come on bass pro shop poppers. Best $2.99 I ever spent! 😂

I fell in love with the Pop Max this Summer. First time trying it, I caught 4 fish over 4 pounds including a new PB. It was awesome. I would cast into shade near shallow cover, let it set until the ripples dissipate, one pop then wait 10 seconds or so... Most of my fish came several seconds after the first pop as the bait just sat still, but the bass exploded on it!

The Rapala's I've a dedicated box just for them. Number 9,11,13's floating, countdown, jointed. I keep'm separate from my jerk baits. Woodchopper's are a bit hard to find but I love them! I've four at present of different colors.

@@castandchill Well as an old man of the north, I don't fish beyond Thanksgiving. If then, the water gets too hard. But if the water is dead calm, I'm reaching for the rap's. Whether it's spring, summer or fall. Randy mentioned using the smallest of jerks to stay nearly in one spot. Another trick is with a med action soft tip is to wiggle from side to side 4-5" each side. The bait will stay in one spot and create rings around itself. I've watched die'n shad on the surface just quivering much the same way. Another way to fish it is 1-2 inches under the surface. Water that is dead calm is like a mirror and it looks like two to the fish! Spring it's the 13, summer it's the 11, fall I'll generally go with the 9. It's not a power presentation but a finesse. Randy we have clear water here and it changes color's in spot's our deepest depth is 25ft and you can still see completely to the bottom but whole Reservoir is like that even depth changes we have on spot that is brown but it is still clear can you do a fishing video about fish that brown clear water that you can see all the way to the bottom on how to fishing what like that attached or not attached to the clear water without stain. Can you do a fishing video on how fish situation's like that one moving into different stained clear water from totally clear water or just the stained clear water straight to the bottom or both.

I have a question about water clarity. How dirty is too dirty for topwaters? Are there any you would use in less than 18" of water? Or is it better to go with a different technique in the murky water? Thanks Randy

Randy can I ask what your FROG SETUP IS?! You said you use a rod under 7ft but I haven't found a Hvy 7 ft rod that works well for FROGGIN! Any info would be appreciated greatly Thanks

Man, in sevreall years infishing here in Brazi (at lesta 30 years). I do think that colors are not a magor factor. I mean, I beleave that black or white are the go to collors in a everyday fishing. But I do feel that some pink collors make a diferense some days

Can you use the wake bait at night? Or is it too subtle? I heard that the walking baits get missed too much at night, otherwise I think all the other ones will work at night.

I have used wakebaits to great effect after dark. I usually retrieve it a little slower than I would during the day. In my experience, fish don’t miss it as much as a walking bait because the side to side motion of the bait is not as wide or erratic. I seems to be pretty easy for fish to track. Just my experience.

I have to disagree about the whopper popper I fish it all year, I also fish it like a walk to dog during the spawn! I also know a guy in our local tournaments that throws a frog allllll year and catches fish....

I need to use the old school floating rapala. I have not used it in 20+ years. I love the hollow body frog, my favorite buzzbait is the old school Lunker Lure, and my favorite winged bait is the Jackall Pompadour. I am trying the new Rapala prop bait, and I have lost all faith in the whopper plopper.
