Dear Rupert, Please define the phrase ‘One thing too many’- (in detail, please)
@EnglishwithRupert
@EnglishwithRupert 28 дней назад
Hi! Let me extend the example of a mountain climber. Let's say they plan to climb 5 mountains this year, starting with the smallest and ending with the tallest. They climb the first 4 mountains easily. However, they find that the 5th mountain is just too difficult for them, and so they don't climb it. This could be described as "a bridge too far". When I mentioned "one thing too many", I meant someone who had done several things but couldn't manage the next thing. I hope that's helpful, and thanks for commenting 🙂

@@EnglishwithRupert Thanks, Rupert. To expand your example, would it be correct to ascribe the meaning along the lines of: ‘One extra thing to do (to climb) would be too much (work) which one won’t be able to handle.’

That's probably true, David! Learning vocabulary is best a little at a time. The key skill is being able to keep learning a little at a time and not giving up! (By the way, that was an excellent use of "a bridge too far"!).
