Rajiv Jalan is a highly accomplished clinician and distinguished Professor of Hepatology at the Institute for Liver and Digestive Health, UCL Medical School. Additionally, he serves as an Honorary Consultant at both the Royal Free Hospital and University College London Hospitals. With a remarkable academic background, including, and a wealth of experience, Dr. Jalan has established himself as a leading authority in the field of Hepatology.
Dr. Jalan's research interests lie at the intersection of clinical practice and translational research, with a specific focus on liver failure. His groundbreaking work has yielded crucial insights into the role of systemic inflammation in the progression of liver injury, cirrhosis, and ultimately, liver failure. Notably, his pioneering observations have led to the identification and characterization of acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) as a distinct clinical syndrome, characterized by specific clinical, prognostic, and pathophysiological features.
Recognizing the significance of ACLF as a high-mortality condition and an unmet medical need, Dr. Jalan has played a pivotal role in spearheading research efforts. Over the past 15 years, his groundbreaking description of ACLF has inspired more than 800 published papers on the subject and has motivated research groups and industry alike to delve deeper into understanding its pathogenesis, refining prognostic tools, and developing novel treatments.
Dr. Jalan has cultivated a vibrant clinical practice and established a dedicated laboratory to further investigate the pathophysiological underpinnings of ACLF. Through extensive collaborations with renowned investigators, influential foundations, and industry leaders worldwide, he has fostered a collaborative environment conducive to groundbreaking discoveries. Notably, he was a founding member of the EASL CLIF Consortium, a collaboration of 100 European hospitals, which has gained independent funding with the aim of advancing new treatments for cirrhosis and liver failure.
With a prolific publication record comprising 396 original papers, editorials, and reviews, Dr. Jalan's research output reflects his exceptional dedication to advancing the field of hepatology. His contributions have garnered widespread recognition, as evidenced by his impressive H-Index of 83 on Google Scholar and a total citation count surpassing 20,000. Dr. Jalan's enduring commitment to research, patient care, and academic excellence continues to shape the landscape of hepatology and holds promise for improving outcomes in patients with liver failure.
The current lecture was presented at the INEDSYS Hepatology Club on May 6, 2023.
