I previously owned an Africa Twin but I found it a little tall and heavy for off road use so after a couple of years, I sold it. Then I bought a Himalayan and I owned this for three years and I got my fill of single track. Recently I bought a KLR 650S which suits me fine. I'm 5'4" and 70 years old. I will be sticking to gravel and easy single track.

At 74 my favourite places to ride are back gravel roads . Roads that are not maintained for year around use & Logging roads etc. I miss my old 04 KLR & was hoping to find a newer model when I found a KLX which I must admit has been fun to explore with, but I miss the comfort & wind protection of the KLR on open paved roads. My older brother is 78 & still rides regularly. Just ride within your abilities. As you age you need to adjust.

yup, if you stay relatively healthy and strong enough there is no reason people can do stuff like this as long as their health situation allows it. Im 53 and am at the local motocross track going crazy once a week when its not winter. In the winter im in the gym. Im 5'11 and 220lbs of muscle because of the sport. People call my popeye because my forearms are massive from my death grip on my motocrosser.

12 years ago I started riding. Started on a 2011 KLR, and it was tippy toe. Made myself get better, and the gravels roads and trails helped alot. Now at 44 I'm just getting into hard enduro, and always enjoyed the work out with trail riding a KLR, but holy shit hard enduro skillz you up and keeps you in shape. Trying my darndest to line up a snow bike kit for my 450 enduro. Also really wanting the Triumph Tiger sport 660. I just love riding😄 Many middle aged riders switching to the up right, higher veiws in traffic, and the best riding position to travel long hours. Plus the skills learnt on loose surfaces will someday save your bacon✌

56 here. After 12 years of riding road bikes (notably 2004 BMW R1150R for 6 years and a Honda VTX 1300), I went for ADV riding with a 2022 KLR650. Having a lot of fun. Took a few classes to learn the basics of off-roading and ADV bike handling. The KLR is exactly what I needed to learn the fundamentals while still having fun touring at an appropriate pace. I might upgrade to an middle weight ADV twin cylinder bike in the future, but I am definitely glad I took the challenge. I plan to ride for a long time. Not long ago, I met an older rider in his late 70's who decided to downsize to a KTM 390 Adventure for his daily rides, and added a Ural Side Car for his long distance Adventure touring trips. Quite a clever option.

I have a YZ250 two-stroke and hit the local track once a week when its not winter, sometimes twice a week if work allows.. Im 53 now. I have bene told a MILLION times by people I know that Im too old for the sport since I was in my early 40's. It annoys the hell out of me when I hear it and I sort of lay into them with "Why? Im strong and healthy so why do you think I should stop exactly?" and they say things like "oh you dont bounce back as fast when you get hurt" etc and I tell them Ive bene doing this for 30 years now and I dont get injured as badly because im so strong and healthy all the time and when i do hurt myself, I heal up and move on. Im 5'11 and 220lbs and pretty much solid muscle because of my sport. People mean well but they are clueless.

I can’t imagine not having an ADV bike now. It’s too much fun, and that may be where the age thing comes in. Most of us that are on ADV bikes now, have a ton of experience on street bikes. Hey, also 59 and I gave up my street bike for my KLR. Once we get used to the ADV suspension you get spoiled for anything else. What back trouble? The physical aspect of off-road riding is surely a consideration. But it has more to do with fitness, than age. If you're out of shape and think you're going to jump on an ADV and start having a good ol' time ripping around off-road, you will be in for a big sore-ass surprise. 😁 In fact, even in-shape you'll still need to train up for it.... That said, off-roading is the most fun we can have on motorcycles, so yes ADVing is worth the cost at any age. Now if I can just stop taking about it, pick an ADV and buy it... I can get on with the show...

If you want to challenge yourself and your age, sell that mini bike and buy a adventure bike. Then go tear up some dirt, ride like a madman down some nasty trails. Get crazy and live a little. I'm the same age as you and own a Triumph 900 rally Pro and ride the hell out of it. Not on the street passing cornfields, but on the worst backroads in AZ. Michigan has some awesome trails that you could "adventure" on so why are you riding like an old man driving 10 under the speed limit? At our age time is short and we don't have time to be complacent.
