Thanks for doing the video and pointing out all the possible mistakes. May I suggest you keep your long hair up in a bun while working around the lathe?
I'm an engineer, long hair almost to my waste. Was in a huge factory not long ago, and the CEO was walking through with the forewoman, and she starts screaming at me about company policy, and hair being tied. (I had been there for over a week installing a $1 million dollar machine, and this day I was only training.) Anyhow I looked at her and said, "Let's get 1 thing straight, you invited me, I'm not an employee, and I won't be told how to wear my hair." She starts with her, but, but, no, but, wait a minute..... I said, "I'm not in a position to debate whoever came up with the hair policy. I will state, it indeed is a DANGEROUS proposition. But I can tell you this, on rare occasions my Japanese wife my throw a braid in. If I'm working around spinning shafts, I would be ENTIRELY descalped if it is in a braid. And many times, that literally can kill a person. If it is in just a pontail, you are "almost" in just as dangerous a position, you might get lucky, and it not entirely descalp you, so that is very dangerous. If my hair is hanging, what "likely" would occur, is I'm going to lose a CLUMP. So of the 3 ways to wear your hair, doing NOTHING, would be the least of the 3. A BUN! would indeed be the safest. I'm not sure I know how to do that or most guys, but you INDEED are correct. My PREFERRED, method, is to stuff it all under a baseball hat. I'm not a "wear it backwards" kind of a guy. But if I'm working up close to something on rare occasions I do. But YOU are correct in your statement. Many people immediately go to braid, or pontail, and I personally believe, those are more dangerous than doing NOTHING.
Nice work! Two things you definitely did right were to use wood blocks and apply lots of smaller taps with the hammer instead of getting in a hurry and trying to knock the spindle in/out with a few big hammer swings. I have an old flat belt Logan too. I haven't tried this myself yet (mine came with several spare splice belts so I haven't had to resort to using a serpentine) but I've heard several people recommend flipping the serpentine belt inside out, facing the smooth side inward toward the pulleys. You can probably ease the belt tension off quite a bit more than with the original leather belt too. The less tension, the less stress it puts on the components. --More importantly though is that if the compound slide / tool post crashes into the chuck while under power feed, the belt can slip instead of breaking gears. I have a Logan witth a leather belt, and If I try to take off more than the lathe can chew, the flat belt slips and more often than not slips off the pulley. It's annoying, but it keeps tthings from breaking.
I broke the clipper lacing out of my belt just now and thanks to your video I am on my way to the auto parts store to buy a serpentine belt. Thanks for the tutorial. It was really helpful.

Done some of that kind of work for a living, where you are possibly having "lube squeaks" if there is no "yellow metal" bearings/bushings, you might try moly loaded grease as used on cv joints, I have good luck with it.
@@DylanEdmiston Ok, if it still is and bothers you, (admit you may already have done this fix..) a touch of beeswax might fix that without introducing slip.
