some pat testing machines can power up an appliance to perform a load / leakage test of required. otherwise you could perform a function test simply by plugging it in to a socket after the PAT test has been performed.
Ben i was testing a Laptop trolley today, 32 laptops all fed by 8 4 gang extensions, the extensions all plugged in to another 8 gang extension fed by an IEC flex, I couldn't test the flex as ive not seen one like it before, kettle flex but bigger so wouldn't fit in the tester so just did a visual, all 8 4gang extensions test ok but the 8 gang one kept saying open. The trollies are only 12 month old and both of them said open, what am i doing wrong or is it a case of its IT equipment.
what you sometimes find with the IT trollies is that the installed extensions banks have internal switches so they turn in sequence to avoid all 8 of them powering up at once and causing a surge. Because of that it will show open circuit because the internal switch will be open. Can't say for sure that this is the case here but something you could check.
