Get off social media would be my advice to young people (I'm 44). Unless you're using it to market your business or for a very specific purpose all it is doing is eating away at your time and shortening your attention span. You will lose nothing without social media. You will only gain time to dedicate to things that will bring benefits to you, real benefits.

As someone who is also in their 40's, I couldn't agree more. I often wonder what I would be like if it existed in my formative years.
@calebvisage8892
@calebvisage8892 3 года назад
As someone in their early 20's, I second that. I've been almost completely off social for almost a year and just a couple weeks ago I had to go on FB to contact someone, and scrolling through my feed I painfully noticed what a sad place social media really is. I'm only going to use it to market myself as a freelancer someday, like you suggest, otherwise it's just a time-vampire.

The one thing I'll say about this is that your friends can easily kind of forget you exist if they don't see you interacting on social media. Especially if you live far away. There are definitely other ways to remind them but social media is a lot easier to interact.
@miguelribeiro5165
@miguelribeiro5165 3 года назад
I agree social media is not a good place to be when managed poorly.. But, there is always some good side. I'm able to interact with scientists and learn/get inspired from them and watch real and scientific news where I would not be able to do without it. This is true for Reddit and Twitter. If social media is managed correctly, it is a good and fun place to be. But it is really hard to do it, a challenge if you want.

This is really good advice. The thought patterns when you really hone in on some singular subject deeply, make you smarter overall. So specializing in a certain subject doesn’t funnel you down, but instead makes you a better generalist thinker.

escholarship.org/content/qt44v6z152/qt44v6z152.pdf is a great meta-study on the positive effects of training your working memory. There are some nuances on the methods used (n-back training), but I think it captures my point that thinking deeply actually increases your general IQ and fluid intelligence.
