Hey guys. I apologize for the sound quality on this one, as well as the other technical difficulties. I know it's bad. But It's hard to throw away an entire days worth of driving, setting up, shooting, and a ton of lead, and start over sometimes. My philosophy on slug testing for a big game hunting gun. Shoot several slugs at or near max power and see if it likes one of them. I'm looking for the top of the curve where speed and power peak and give me the accuracy I need. I'm sure some of these lighter slugs might shoot better at lower speeds/pressure. However, they would not get anywhere near the energy or penetration as the big heavy ones. I try to choose a bullet that is best for the animal I'm hunting as well. I'm tuning this gun primarily for bull elk this fall in Idaho so I'm after max power. If you are hunting medium size game like hogs and whitetail, I think it would be worth it to tune speed/pressure with the 350grn to 480grn slugs. Where you can sacrifice a little power to have a flatter shooting slug with plenty of power for that size animal.
I started my testing at 3000 psi and am moving up. It’s amazing what a thousand psi can do to a group. Those lighter rounds might stabilize around 800-1000 fps. You might even need to drop it to 2500-3000 psi to get them to fly straight. The bonus there is multiple fills from a 4500 psi tank. Try it you might be surprised by the results.
I agree Sam. It was spraying the light stuff. I will test them again with less pressure. With big game hunting in mind, I tend to just start near max power and see what it likes the best. I want to put the most energy, penetration, and expansion, I can into the animal. Also, if I'm hunting with this gun I'm after something big (bears, elk, big hogs) so a 350 to 450grn bullet going 900fps won't penetrate like a 610grn at 920fps will do. On smaller animals (small to medium hogs, whitetail) the lighter stuff would be great though.
This is what I do for bullet development for my cast bullets. I cast for my Texan 457 CF TX2 so the max fill is still 3600, but the principle is still the same for this larger capacity bottle. I’m very interested in this .580 cal and this is what I would do for testing EACH bullet regardless of weight and style. I have a spreadsheet chart to record data including FPS and groups on target. 4500 psi, 3 shots 4300 psi, 3 shots 4100 psi, 3 shots 3900 psi, 3 shots 3700 psi, 3 shots 3500 psi, 3 shots 3300 psi, 3 shots 3100 psi, 3 shots 2900 psi, 3 shots 2700 psi, 3 shots 2500 psi 3 shots Then when I’ve found the best accuracy, fine tune the psi range to tighten up! Like Sam Houston stated, a lot of surprises are to be found and we’ll likely get more refills from a breathing tank!
I would not mind testing a wide range of lead to find the sweet spot on mr hollow point slugs for the community. I posted my results so far but it is just what slugs I have made myself so far.
Good video, thanks for sharing. I use the Challenger Bullpup cal.50 for big game hunting at a ranges of round about 110 yards, never had any problems at least the first 5 shots. I shoot big pigs 🐖 and realy huge deer 🦌 easily. I don't know how big the game of those guys is, who use the zeus cal.72. In my opinion this gun is to heavy, and for real hunting unpractical. You have almost 2 or 3 good shots with the high pressure you'll for big ranges!
I want a good long range whitetail pcp air rifle but I just can't imagine trying to get in a box stand , Ground blind , lock on stand , hunting in a saddle or even carrying around this giant Elmer Fudd gun in the woods or field all day or period actually... its seems so unrealistic & unreasonable to try to hunt with a gun that's longer than I am tall and weights 15 lbs !!! LMAO 😂 where & how do u hunt with this rifle ???
@@lindseyzacek5211 u ever done any saddle hunting , I wouldn't even attempt with a rifle longer than myself ! I've got a shooting stick but that doesn't help when your gun doesn't fit into the ground blind lol 😆 or the box stand & it's so heavy you wouldn't want tote it more than a 100YARDS... I just think a 8ft gun is a bit extreme lmfao 🤣
You know I like that when you guys have a air rifle and the trigger is no good so you say it's a hunting trigger what about the other big bores that's got like a really good trigger is that not a hunting trigger like the hammer that got a 2 lb trigger I just don't understand it if the triggers no good it's no good why do you guys call it a hunting trigger if the trigger is just no good
What I've never understood about airgunners is that they say 'oh, that bullet was going too fast to be accurate", yet people shoot very similar bullets out of firearms (especially Black powder muzzleloaders, which are at a technological disadvantage to these airguns) at similar velocities and get good accuracy🤦♂. It's not just big bore stuff either, everything from .17 on up, it's the same story. I've looked around on forums and such for an explanation from airgunners, but all I get sounds like absolute BS. If the bullet is sized to the bore dimensions, it shouldn't be shooting 12" at 50 yards from a rest... that's worse than what smoothbore military muskets are capable of lol (they can hit a man in the chest 7/10 shots at 100yards with laughably undersized military ammo, smoothbore competition shooters can get sub 14" groups at 100 yards consistently) but dang, those ".72" bullets have a bad BC, a 585gr .73 round ball has a BC around .103 lol
