Aerosoft have released their new Twin Otter for Microsoft Flight Simulator, and if you - like me - have found yourself with a new shiny aircraft and wondering how to fly it, worry no more! It comes with a nicely detailed and very informative 166-ish page manual at the time of release full of checklists, data and there is certainly plenty to read (it's basically a book - take a look, it's great!)
Over the next 3 episodes in this mini-series I will show you all the key basics you will need to enjoy this fantastic aircraft from gate to gate using BASIC checks so you can make the most out of the Twotter!
We'll run through a basic flight from Skiathos (LGSK) and back.
I hope you find this Start Up video tutorial useful and enjoyable. It's designed to be as basic as possible for all to enjoy so skips a few steps within the start up checklists but as a real Twotter pilot told me a little while back - they're the "full basic checklists" used.
If you want the Twin Otter Checklist summarised onto one page, be sure to visit britishavgeek.com
You can purchase the Aerosoft Twin Otter for MSFS here: www.aerosoft.com/en/flight-si...

Interesting, I have been flying Twin Otters on floats for the past 15 years around Asia, so I have a bit of experience with the airplane. In 99.5% of the time, the props are in feather with the engines shut down, these graphics show props on prop latches which is very uncommon configuration and really only used on seaplane Twins. In real life we are conservative with the battery usage, so min electrical before engine start, including one boost pump at a time. The start up, you want to achieve the most airflow through the turbine, so you wait till Ng peaks, a good battery should give you about 18%, all companies I worked for listed 15% as min. The 12% you are using is PW number, but I have never introduced fuel at this low RPM (8000 hrs in the Twin). As a point of interest the fuel control unit has a min fuel pressure check valve that will not introduce fuel before that 12% is reached. Once Ng stabilizes, release the starter, you don't want the engine driving the starter. After start props all the way forward, not just out of the father detent. Cool sim, have fun.

I think the propeller levers should be all the way forward when starting. Otherwise the propellers are in the feathered position. In the feathered position the blades are parallel to the flight direction and therefore making a lot of aerodynamic resistance when starting the engine. In the fine pitch range the propeller is making the least resistance when rotating. Corresponds to driving your car in the 1 gear, and then shifting up as the speed climbs. I think the recommended propellerpitch/-setting is around 75% of the max revolutions.
@BritishAvgeek

Quite possible but I was following a checklist sent to me by a real twin otter pilot and I guess company SOPs will differ
@jrpsims
@jrpsims 2 года назад
FWIW I’ve sat right behind the pilots on several flights and the prop levers were always in the rear (feathered) position at startup. When it was time to taxi, the prop levers were pushed forward and were then ready for takeoff. Perhaps this is less of an issue because the PT-6A is a free turbine engine?

The Aerosoft Twin Otter was fast becoming my favorite until I found a hole between the cockpit and the passenger compartment in VR. I reported this to them and finally was able to send them screen shots. Today they more or less told me that you are not supposed to be able to be between the cockpit and rest of the fuselage that there was nothing they were going to do about it. This is the last Aerosoft product that I will purchase. I already have the CRJ. I will not accept shoddy workmanship when I spend my money. I have the HP Reverb G2 VR Headset and I see a gaping hole when I am seated in the pilot's seat and look up and back at the overhead panel. You can see out of the aircraft and see No. 1 Engine also. Aerosoft's response was: But that view is only when you move your head through the wall, into the cabin. Ans as that simply is not possible in the real aircraft there is not a lot we can do about that. I'm sorry to be negative but I feel it needs to be said that it is clear you are now making adverts for devs. Not to say it's a bad product but it's clearly far from "fantastic". There are many glaring issues and you have managed between the disclaimer filled preview and this tutorial series not to inform your viewers. Had I made the choice to get this plane based on your advert i would have been sorely disappointed. Getting free planes from devs works well for you but telling others to spend their money when you did not and putting Aerosoft watermarks on your vid is beyond cringe. Sorry but we need content that supports the community and raises standards in the sim not adverts to buy pretty but sub standard products. Again sorry for the shade, but you know what you're doing.
@BritishAvgeek
@BritishAvgeek 2 года назад
Hi! I'll address all the points you have raised as I don't agree with them at all (you'd probably say that's expected): 1. I think it's great and I genuinely enjoy it - I also do not make adverts for developers. I get asked to do reviews by some scenery developers but if it I think something is bad I say so (just look at the constellation video I did) 2. A disclaimer filled preview. That's because I was filming it using the beta so some features may have changed with the release version. Also some of the issues are being actively worked on by Aerosoft - shouldn't we give some credit for that? They're a solid developer. 3. It's not a high fidelity aircraft like the DC6 from PMDG or the upcoming 737 from PMDG. They have aimed to capture the entire MSFS market as best as they can - it appeals to some, not so much for others 4. Again, it's not an advert. 5. "Getting free planes from Devs works well for you"... that's why it is marked as a "paid promotion" - easily confused to think I have been paid for the video but I have not. I have purchased plenty of add-ons off my own back too because I want to - I am not, and this channel is not the sort to go begging or asking for free stuff. 6. Aerosoft watermarks - it's their product isn't it? I've done it for scenery developers etc in the past before too - check some of my previous videos 7. Are you saying I don't support the community when you say "sorry but we need content that supports the community and raises standards in the sim not adverts..." ? I'd like to think I've been exceptionally supportive of the community - funnily enough with tutorials like this amongst other things. If you don't like it, there are plenty of other content creators. Viewing is always optional (as is purchasing any add-on) - and whilst I appreciate your opinion I'll simply call out comments that are out right unfair.

This is not addressed to me, but really dude? Literally nothing you say makes sense.. If you really think Britishavgeek is doing it for the devs, you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. Did you even check any other of his videos?

Update 1 is due out on Tuesday, which is supposed to resolve a number of issues, including the A/P. When the sound gets fixed, it truly will be a fantastic add-on. I also own the Kodak, which as everyone knows came in a more finished state. But it’s kind of boring with the glass panel and short service history. Long live the Twotter!

@@DanBlake3rd I've heard there are flight dynamics issues with the Kodiak too? Haven't got it so don't know myself but read bits around forums. Lots being put into the update from sounds to AP tweaks and more 👍

Right engine starts fine for me, but left engine won’t. It spools up but won’t catch. Left GG rpm stays stuck at around 20%. It leaves the simulator in an unusable state. Must quit and restart. Also, I don’t like that you can’t map some switches to physical hardware because the switches modeled in the sim use non-standard MSFS2020 variables. For instance, the Front and Rear Aux Boost Pump switches can’t be assigned to a physical switches because none of the fuel pump controls match what was used in the plane. You are forced to turn the front and rear pumps on only by using the mouse.Annoying and disappointing.
