Thanks for the review. I just ordered one and wasn’t sure how well it will work, but it was on sale for $10, so I thought it was worth a shot. I bought one last week and tried it on some scraps of OSB yesterday. It is crazy how simple this jig makes dowel joinery. The only thing you have to measure is the depth of the drill bit. Done properly, and it doesn't take much effort to get it right, you get accurate results every time. The only caveat is you must clamp your work piece to drill the holes. With your work piece firmly clamped, use firm pressure to hold the jig in place and you will not have to worry about any movement of the jig while drilling. I was concerned about movement at first but I was surprised at how easy it was to keep the jig still. The handle is comfortable in your hand and the plastic is very stiff. It will not twist or bend. You could spend a lot more money on a Dowelmax or a Woodpeckers jig and you would get a versatile, quality product. But for the price of the JointMate, you could break 10 of them and still only spend less than half as much as you would on one of those expensive tools.

Great vid! Thanks for saving me time figuring this out and saving me $100. I’m sure some purists would say dowelmax, jessem, and the Stanley 59 are better quality/accuracy etc. But as a beginner shelling out more money for a joinery jig isn’t something I really want to do. For $20 the milescraft kit seems like kind of a steal. I’d probably pay $20 for the jointmate alone. Not to mention it’s at every home center I’ve ever been to so I can easily pick one up.

@NBGTFO
@NBGTFO 3 года назад
I just bought this and used it for the 1st time. The joint came out ok... board edges were off maybe 1/64" so not perfect (user error, not the jig's fault) but acceptable for my first time using it. I've got a small cabinet build that I plan on using dowels on for all the panel joints so hopefully I'll be able to do a better job with the rest of the joints.

The options seem to be this, a very expensive Dowel Max or Jessem kit for $100 or more or Chinese knock-offs of these high end options at $40 more or less. Think I will start with this and get an idea of whether I would benefit from a high end option.

I ordered one of these recently. I've been looking around at some various tools, and had considered one of the clamp over self-centering dowel jigs, but after looking at this more, I'm going to try it out. I think once you have the idea of how exactly you should use it, it will be a really good and cheap way to use dowels. Just out of curiosity, if you still use this regularly, do you buy the same kinds of dowels they ship with the jig, or have you tried just cutting down a dowel rod to size? I had considered trying the rod method, and even having some joints that actually go through the entire face of a board to have the end piece show. Although I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not.
@PaulAshley

I just got this jig and found thus video after using it. I'm a novice woodworker and found that the toughest partvifvusing the big is holding it steady on a narrow face while drilling. The video maker here made it look simple but It's not the easy. I wish that the under side was solid so a clamp could be used to hold it in place.

At first I was thinking it was just another gimmick. Once I saw how well it worked for the second half of the joint I realised it could be a really useful tool. Even better was the price. I think I'll be asking Santa for one as my wife never knows what to get me for Christmas. Thanks for sharing this handy tool with us. Just out of interest, inside the moulded body of there might be some writing embossed into the plastic like FRP ABS or PC, PE, PP etc. If it just has the plastic type without FRP or GRP then it could be prone to breaking. The addition of the Fibre Reinforcing or Glass-fibre Reinforcing makes the plastic a lot more durable.

Thanks for the video! Very useful. I own a similar jig that I bought from a China site, difference being it's all yellow and the alignment fence is a little different. I'm a novice woodworker and joinery is an area that I want to learn more, I already use pocket holes a lot but would like to use other methods. I've challenged myself in making a small table with the "mid century style" that is hot right now without using any screws, just glue and joinery. Definitely the dowel jig will be the way to go.

@larryvergon6740
@larryvergon6740 4 года назад
How does the jig compensate for the 3 sizes of dowels it works with? I assume the 'end' holes (are they drill bushings that you use in the center hole for different sizes?) on the top have something to do with it, but using a dowel in the first part to align the fixture for the mating part dowel holes would require some kind of compensation for the different diameters of the dowels.
@WoodshopJunkies
@WoodshopJunkies 4 года назад
For the most part the process stays the same for all dowel sizes. The only difference comes when centering and drilling the first set of holes. For 10mm dowels you use the 10mm bushing located in the center of the jig (like I did in the video). To center the 10mm bushing you use the centering posts located across from one another. For 6 and 8mm doweling you would use the 6 and 8mm bushings located along each side of the jig. To center those bushing you would use the centering posts along the corresponding side. at 1:01 I briefly show the difference. Later in the process you would use the corresponding dowel alignment slot in the same way. Hope this is helpful.
