Today in the second installment of my affordable dream car series, I am looking at the Ford Mustang GT. An American icon, the Mustang was finally launched in RHD for the UK market a few years ago - to coincide with the release of the sixth generation car. A big upgrade for the Mustang as a whole, just how is this car in my first drive of the V8 on UK roads?

This is the best "real world" review of the mustang on the internet so well done. It's interesting to read that when Ford Australia initially pitched for the Mustang they were given an allocation of 1000 units by Ford HQ which was over what Ford Australia thought they could sell. Some execs were worried that they would only shift 500 or so units in the whole model life. 5 years later they have passed 26,000 units. I had my first drive of a mustang a few weeks ago and was seriously impressed. It's not an M3/M4, it's a different beast and pitched perfectly at the market segment it's aimed for. Its fast enough, sounds great, looks great. It's special enough for the average bloke (and increasingly females ) to feel a real sense of achievement and pride in owning one without breaking the bank. It can be modded by people with OCMS (obsessive compulsive modification syndrome) or left bone stock. Either way it performs it's intended function of bringing a smile to the owners face. That's the whole point of owning a car like that.........innit.

@@chevalier_noir you have to compare to its competitors though. You’re looking at £60,000 for an equivalent power BMW, more for an equivalent powered Mercedes here in the UK. For something that sounds as good, looks good and has a lot of go it’s a bargain compared to its competitors. I know the Australian economy is different to the UK, cost of living is 40% higher but I’m sure the general comparison still works

These mustang's are a cool car regardless of interior, very affordable means you get more bang for the buck, and does stand out more compared to European cars of the same power, even if it's not as good to drive the b roads.

@@coopsnz1 The premium package is still extra, tho it is a bit different from the US one. In europe we always have the SYNC system with the big screen. Premium Package pre facelift was just better (fake) leather, cooled seating (or recaro bucket seats without heated/cooled seating) and more speakers, a subwoofer and different wheels. But overall you're right, the Australia & EU models are standardly better equiped and the price "difference" isn't really there after taxes and extras you'd pick anyways.

There are a number of appeals for the Mustang in the UK. A decent sound/throb, it looks good, RH drive, relatively spacey, selection of engines, decent price (more bang for the buck), Ford is a familiar, trusted and established brand and it comes with a MANUAL box, making it a drivers car, not just a poser or commuter slog.

Anyone who owns the current Mustang owes it to themselves to get Koni's Special Active dampers. I test drove two Mustangs back to back with and without the Koni dampers and the difference was huge. It completely transformed the ride and handling of the car. The standard car had a very harsh ride especially the rear, and like Jay has said, also a bit floaty as you push on. Meanwhile with the Koni's the harshness was completely eliminated, but itstead of it now being soft like you would expect, it actually maintained a reassuring firmness (as opposed to being jarringly stiff like the original) and had much improved body control. There was some turn in understeer I experienced on the standard car. That was fixed with the Koni's. I also felt like I could flow with the car through the bends and down the road as I had more of a feel for the car and a trust in what it was doing at any given moment. With the harshness gone you really gain a confidence in driving the car as it doesn't get upset over bumps anymore and the feedback from the road is much purer. So yes the Koni's make the Mustang more comfortable and gives it more body control, but the key takeaway here is the confidence it gives you in the car. If you enjoy driving these cars like they should be driven, that is the one thing that will make you enjoy it the most as you can fully use the car without being scared of it. Usually with suspension upgrades you expect some compromises, but with these dampers it improves every single aspect of the ride for every different type of road that I drove it on. It turned the car from something I couldn't wait to get out of, into a car that I wanted to take home.

I had, in my youth, a brand new 1966 2+2 Mustang with the 'hi-po' 289 engine and 4sp stick. I paid about $2600 for it out the door, and loved it for a couple yrs. before I had to move to an uncertain job 2000 miles away and decided to give it to my Mom and just keep my motorcycle for my new life in CA. I wish I had it now, cause it would be worth about the same $ as the one you were driving here. I've had the pleasure to drive a friends ecoboost 2.3 with Mountune upgrades and must say "that" is the version I'd buy if I were buying a newer one. The feel of the more balanced weight dist. with the same power as the V8, makes it feel much more nimble, not to mention the fuel economy. It's not as important to me these days to make lots of noise, even on my MC.
@kmlpchikaz

Seen a few challenger hellcats up here too and a jeep set North Yorkshire is an entirely different animal. Go to Harrogate or York and you’ll spot at least 5 supercars in a day easy. I lived in the States for a couple of years and placed an order for one before they came out, didn’t even drive one, read a great review and it said all you need options wise is the Performamce pack and that’s what I did. Not sure what that would equate too in the UK but it was summer tyres, stiffer anti roll bars and the 6 pot brembo’s up front and optioned the cracking recaro bucket seats. Owned for 20 month, 20K miles, 5 track days, the car was faultless and so full of character, I loved it. To an English bloke in the USA you need to do the V8 thing and so glad I did, if we had stayed over there a Corvette would have been next on my list. After moving back to the UK bought a 996 c2 which I love, more nibble than the Stang but miss that rumble and soundtrack of the V8, I love to see them on the road in the UK but have not chatted to any owners as yet. Great review of a car that oozes character and contrary to belief I think handles well, only downside in the UK to ownership is the Petrol prices. Keep up the great reviews on a superb channel.

This summer I finally got a 2017 GT, in Europe. The reactions I get from random people are insane, all the time, and I didn't expect that at all. Personally, I enjoy all these strangers talking to me. It makes me feel more alive, but... because of the attention, I don't like to be seen in my hometown driving it. The guy with the cool car always gets hate and I don't want to contribute to it by doing grocery runs in a V8.

With the GT it’s not just the engine that gets upgraded. The suspension, brakes, tires, exhaust, wheels also get upgraded. Ford is now providing upgrades to the ecoboost models as well (exhaust, suspension, brakes etc). There is a ecoboost HPP that has like 330hp and other speed goodies. The V6 option has been dropped since 2018 models came out.

The 2.3 turbo Ecoboost Mustangs are very common in America. Much more common then the V6 (those seem to have all been sent to rental agencies). You should try driving one of the Ecoboost cars. I think you will be surprised by it. Less weight up front and quite a bit more torque than the V6 they replaced.

Well done and well said and perfect car to start the Affordable Dream Car series! The spec on this Mustang is spot on! What a beautiful car! For me, the Mustang does not become relevant to own until Mustang GT with a manual transmission all the way up to the less affordable Shelby Mustang GT 350. The Shelby Mustang GT 500 is an AMAZING example of what a Mustang can be but it does not come in a manual and it is even less affordable than the GT 350. I would have LOVED to have that V8 growl and crackle every morning but right now, as a family man, I needed car with room for my family and the back seats in the Mustang are just not usable and even here in the US with my "2 car garage" there is no way I could fit a Mustang and another car in my garage :( For me this affordable dream car would mean I would need another house to put it in because there is no way I would park it on the street. Keep up the great work. Can't wait to see that comes next.

One thing i'd also say is Ford fitted terrible (and dangerous) Pirelli P Zero tyres to the 15-17 model year cars, they are downright scary in the wet when cold. The 18+ ones have Michellin ones which I've heard are much better. Seems a minor criticism but doesn't give a lot of confidence in a 420BHP RWD car when the tyres start to slide just pulling out of a junction on a cold day. Otherwise i'd truly recommend one, i take my son to nursery in it and the boot space is more than ample which is a nice almost surprise too.

I’ve always agreed with Rory Reid on this one. Part of the charm of muscle cars is the fact they’re unsophisticated. I think you need to be a special kind of person to choose one over the usual German alternatives knowing it’s technically worse in pretty much every way. This generation of Mustang was built by Ford, knowing it would be sold in Europe. In order to be a sales success they had to make it more sophisticated, easier to live with, to appeal to a wider audience. It’s not a true muscle car in my opinion. They should be brash and unapologetic. The newest version even comes with a quiet startup mode. A quiet startup mode? On a muscle car? Come on guys.... “If you want a Mustang that’s easy to live with, do you want a Mustang at all?”

This video showed more UK "backroads" than I have ever seen before, and I have began to see the problem with your road network. It resembles what the US had before the Interstate system started up in the 1950s. And that is meandering roads that went everywhere, but nowhere at the same time. Meaning that they go to everyone's house no matter where it is in the country side, but by doing so, it takes forever to get anywhere. The back roads in Kentucky resemble this. We call it the "they must've turned a blind mule loose and followed it with a asphalt machine" kind of road. When Interstates came in and then more 4-lane roads, which required more right-of-way, roads tended to straighten out and go thru whatever geography they wanted, instead of sticking to the easiest landscape possible.

Here in the States, I see a lot of base-spec V6 solid rear-axel Mustangs. They seem to be daily drivers for people. But mostly, you see the GTs. The solid axel version are more common. But the 2015 refit with 4 wheel independent suspension are very popular. Saw a young man sporting the 2.3 badge on his Mustang. And he was with a group of young men showing off their Japanese tuner cars, in a parking lot. So, even though it's a bigger car, the handling and the turbo motor seems to appeal to the drift crowd. For a guy my age, 53, I'm really attracted to the GT Premium Convertible, with the 10 speed auto and the 3.73 Torsen rear end. I live in Texas, and the call of the Western highways seems to beg for a V8 rumbling through the canyons. No need to go nuts and race through them. Just cruise with that 10 speed auto. Should be epic with the top down. But, I honestly feel I'd enjoy a Lexus RC F with a sunroof even more. It's a much more refined and nimble car. But, if I decide on a ragtop, Mustang is the way to go.
@RobertFalconer1967
@RobertFalconer1967 4 года назад
Like every other Mustang, it really depends upon how you spec your car out. Opt for the Bullitt, for example, and you get a nice set of performance bits, several from the Performance Pack One: Direct and port fuel injection; intake manifold and cylinder linings from the Shelby GT350; Torsen limited slip differential; 3:73 gears; and six-piston Brembo brakes. You can also add the adjustable magnetorheological suspension system. As to the interior? A little tired of the "cheap" refrain, frankly. Base BMWs ain't that great in my personal experience. Neither are run-of-the-mill Hondas or Toyotas. The current generation Stang is on par with any of those, more so if you go for the premium upgrades...and the styling and presentation is better than any of them, IMHO, especially if you get the 12" electronic LCD instrument cluster.

Now onto the car itself. Mustangs...Gen6 (aka the S550s). Probably the best generation of 'Stangs yet. I had an 89 Fox Body, Gen3 Mustang myself in high school. Total garbage car. Severely underpowered with a 2.3L 4 cylinder engine that struggled to do 75mph. And only registered 85. And it had constantly mechanical problems from minor things like power doorlock actuators going bad, to engine and transmission problems. The price was around $8000 give or take $500 in 1989. The power in these new cars is so much better, but still a bit less than what it should be. My 2016 F150 pickup has a 3.5L EcoBoost that puts out 365 hp with 420 lb ft Torque. Had I waited for the 2017 models, that would have gone up to 375 hp with 470 lb ft Torque with the Gen2 EcoBoost. And don't knock the 3.5L Ecoboosts...they have more Torque than the 5.0L Coyote engines. And only slightly less HP. With my F150, it's happy at 4500 rpm and can get there with just a little bit of gas. It'll jump up there really quick and that's when the Turbos really kick in. And regarding customization options for the Mustang and F150, there's a whole aftermarket website that carries nothing but parts for those two vehicles. It's AmericanMuscle.com ironically.

Even the GT won't really garner much attention anymore, you pretty much have to have a GT350/GT350R/GT500 to get any attention.
