dial in your gear, your effects, and your sound, but remember... NOTHING is more important than having a heart for serving God's people in whatever you do -- whether you're rocking out or stacking the folding chairs in the storage room after the service. the second most important element is practice practice PRACTICE!!! both of those essentials WILL come through your guitar, your pedals, your amp, your presence, your facial expressions, and all that you do, regardless of how much you spend on gear. God bless and thanks for a helpful video.

my son is a worship guitarist and that's what we pray for about the worship team and church in general, we left a church where the worship leader had no business being there. we found out he would cuss at some of the worship team and was a jerk on top of that , we left the church before he and his wife who was the same were let go but there were some other things going on with that church!

I agree worship is not playing or singing, it is not what this world thinks. It is not what is seen or what is heard by men. There is no glory in men for worship, yet we are the recipients of his perfection when we worship him through spirit and living his truth. Music is great and he made it, but it is not the only way on how we worship, it is only a tool.

That's why churches should have orchestra pits, so the focus is on the Lord and not on the "worship team."

My thoughts on how to get this kind of sound even cheaper: Use the guitar you want because yeah it's preference. Swap the vox ac30 with an ac15 because they can be had for cheap. Substitutes could be blues jr (fender) or a classic 30 (peavey). Swap the xotic compressor with a mxr dyna comp, boss cs-3, or dod 280 compressor because they are cheaper (especially used) Swap the polytune for a used TU-2 (because we are doing this on the cheap but not on the suck) Keep the spark or swap it for an electro harmonix LPB-1 Swap the OCD with a EHX the glove (cheaper) or a Joyo Ultimate drive (cheapest) as they are both varients on the OCD. Some people even like the Joyo more than the OCD. Keep the Cinders but also consider the EHX soul food as these are both (loosely) based on the centaur and can be had pretty cheap used. Keep the CE-5 but if you are really on a budget the Mooer ensemble king does the CE-2 sound pretty well. The boss DD-20 unit is awesome but honestly older boss sub compact stomps are gonna be fine in this role. I would avoid the dd-6 (the way tap tempo is done kind of stinks on the 6), but the 3,5, and 7 are all solid choices. Swap the matthew effects for an RV-6 or oceans 11. If you need to go cheaper snag an RV-5 used.

Perfectly good/very nice sounding rig for a little over $1000. (All things being bought used on Craigslist/reverb etc for realistic deals on those sites that could be found with a little patience) Keep in mind this in in my opinion. Mexican made Tele or Strat - $350 Fender Blues Jr - $350 Fulltone Fulldrive over drive pedal- $75 (has two gain stages which is nice to have) Boss DD20 delay pedal - $100 Strymon Blue sky reverb - $200 True Tone 8spot isolated power supply - $100 Ernie Ball vp junior volume pedal - $60 (for swells) Of course all that to say, your gear is only as good the technique you play with in the first place and the time you take to dial it all in. Hope that helps somebody :) - Great video. Keep doing what y'all are doing.

Great vid! I don’t understand the criticism in the comments section about spending so much on a worship rig. What’s wrong with wanting to sound good for God? People are acting self righteous about how little money they have invested into an art form that is supposed to be dedicated to praising Christ as if that’s not totally twisted and backwards. I know I’m just stirring the pot on a positive constructive video, but I’d challenge anyone that criticized the budget in this video to check their yearly TV and video game budget and then reassess what they deem to be a “Christian use of money”

For everyone harping on the AC30 choice, he explains clearly that he uses an iso-box to control the stage volume. If you’re not handy with tools to build one yourself, then just buy an amp attenuator. There are tons of options people!

For anyone looking for a board only solution (no amp), I highly recommend Tech 21 Character pedals. I have been using a Tech 21 Blonde for years, and it's one of the best things to happen to my live playing. Signal chain is compressor > OD pedal(s) > volume pedal > Tech 21 Blonde > delay > reverb > into a DI box to the mixer. It's wonderful :)
@wesreynolds3454

Sounds very similar to my rig... but with the Sans Amp Tech 21 NYC amp/cab sim. Signal chain is tuner>compressor>stacked OD's> volume pedal>Tech 21 NYC> 2 delays (1 analog and 1 stereo)> 2 reverbs (1st for light and 2nd for heavy for ambient)> tremolo> DI box to mixer. Yeah I've tried several amp/ sims but I always come back to the Tech 21!!!

I would started a Mexican Telecaster which was roughly $400 used. Great guitar and perfect for worship. I set the amp to have a decent amount of break up to make up for a drive. Compressor: Optional but amazing Drive: Ocd or a Morning Glory Reverb: Boss Rv5 Delay: walrus delay Tuner: Boss Tuner That is what I had when I first started and worked well.

Boss pedals can work across the board (pun intended). They are often very affordable used and easy to find on Reverb / ebay / Craigslist. For worship, I'd recommend SD-1 and/or DS-1; any of their reverb series (RV-#) and Delay (DD-#). Those three pedals should be good enough for ground-level electric guitar parts.

Do you have a video or info on how you're connecting to the amps if they're off stage? I'm trying to understand if your amp is off stage in another room are people running one long (or connected) guitar cable to the input or are they using XLR cables? Also if the amps have an effects loop how would you run delay/reverb pedals into the effects loop from your pedalboard over a long distance? Thanks.

If you’re in my position, qnd my first time to own one.. all I want is just to have a galloping delay tone like U2’s (Where streets have no name) and some ambient delay tones (Hillsong), which should I choose? Music equipment is so much developed, it can be easily overqualified. When the worship team uses Cajon or a V drum kit, you can mix this with a $ 200 Behringer Xenyx X2222 USB console. When the room is smaller, a MAUI 5 or Bose L1 compact twin set together with a subwoofer may be enough (can't validate the price, because Thomann isn't allowed to sell products of US companies into the USA and about other dealers Google is anything than my friend). This would be about 1300 to 2300 $ plus some monitoring and microphones you may pay possibly between 2000 and 3000 $.

A more budget friendly option would be VR series from vox, you get that chimey vox tone and if you use the channel selector pedal you get an overdrive/distortion built in. The ac30vr is like 500 new I found one used for 300 thing is a champ but they also have ac15 version that’s even cheaper

@DareBear2099
@DareBear2099 5 лет назад
Thank you so much for the response Mr. Reed! Before I start, I gotta say this, his tone is pretty amazing and he had some awesome tips and advice. However I know from my experience that you don't have to spend a lot to have a lot of killer tone. I have known a lot of guys and gals that get a little deterred when they see names like, VOX and Guitars that have headstocks with Fender or Gibson or PRS on them and pedal boards that look like they can launch Marty McFly Back in time. For worship you don't need a lot and I think your friend had the perfect amount of pedals needed. That said, for the amp and guitar you could go with something more on a budget. I use an Orange Micro Dark, which sounds and looks silly, however it has all the things you'd need to play at a worship gig and still utilize a pedalboard setup if you are playing at a church that doesn't allow amps on stage. It is a tube amp head, single channel, speaker emulated line out, 20 honest watts of power and fit's on a pedal board and has a buffered effects loop for your delay's and reverbs. If the gain structure is an issue, it's easy to swap out the pre amp tube and replace it with a cleaner tube with more headroom like a Groove Tube 12AU7 (and they cost about 10 or 11 dollars new), you can pick up a used Micro Dark cheap for starting about 140 dollars on Reverb.com or a new one for about 180. Then if you want you could replace the tube for about 10 bucks and you have a very pedal friendly amp that you can use either with a direct box to the board/PA or plugged into an 8 to 16 ohm cabinet of your choosing. Thomann.com has a Harley Benton 1x12 Cab with a real Celestion Vintage 30 that goes new for 117 US dollars, and that's kind of the cream of the crop in terms of speakers. If you want an amp that sounds like a Matchless or a Vox, Bugera makes two lines of fantastic amplifiers that fit the bill and have all the modern appointing's. I used a Bugera BC-30 for YEARS and it cost 200 dollars new from musiciansfriend.com when I bought it at the time, and like the Matchless, it was an all tube amp with two different 12 inch speakers, had 4 different sing channels and an effects loop along with the ability to go from 30 to 15 watts, Bugera also have their V22 single channel amp that is modeled after an AC15 and cost half as much. Guitars is a big trickier I feel, there is nothing wrong with owning a Squire, and they offer models that are 100 percent professional and usable in worship. The Squire J Mascics (from Dinosaur Jr.) offer a Jazzmaster type guitar that goes for less than 400 dollars and has the look, feel and play-ability of a guitar double it's price range. G&L makes Fender style strats and telecasters that are quality that I've seen used in many worship bands and damn do they sound fantastic. My main axe for years at my old church was a PRS SE Singlecut stock, it wasn't flashy, it was just a very well made no nonsense instrument and I loved the tones I got out of that thing. And again used you can grab one for 250 to 300 dollars on reverb. If you want to go bang for not much buck, the Harley Benton brand (thomann.com) puts out some amazing guitars for around the 250 dollar price point that are professionally set up, have quality hardware and electronics and are 100 percent professional and are set up by guitar techs in Germany. The thomann website has quite a few, from Les Paul models to Telecaster models and even Jazz master models all retailing for max 300 dollars including shipping. For pedals, I'd recommend checking out cheaperpedals.com. They have some excellent pedals there that are budget friendly and professional quality and to be honest most of them are on my board now. I use a hotone Blues (Blues driver clone) as my main Over Drive pedal, a Joyo Black Rat (Rat clone) for my lead gain and a hotone fat buffer to thicken up my rhythm. All three of those pedals cost less than 50 dollars new and will cover any gain you may need or use in worship. Joyo makes a volume pedal as well that I've been using for over a year that is in the less than 50 dollars price range. I use a Donner Delay Pedal also from that site that cost less than 50 dollars and an old Line 6 M5 for my delay and modulation that you can find used for less than a hundred dollars on guitarcenter.com or Reverb.com. Added up, 350 for pedals, amp/cab/combo starting around 300 dollars, and worship guitar for between 300 to 400 dollars, add a powered pedal board from SKB for 100 dollars on amazon and you have a rig for right around a thousand dollars. And you won't be skimping on quality/tone.

Seriously, what the heck are these comments. Why don’t you go lecture Solomon about the lavishness of the temple while you’re at it. I’ll tell you right now, Jesus LOVES that I spend money on my guitar tone because He made me for that. Most people spend thousands of dollars on hobbies EASILY (take a look at what you paid for internet and television over the last 2 or 3 years), and this dude does this professionally. If you’re a professional at anything and you scoff at spending a couple grand on your tools, you’re not going to be very good at it. Cost is always relative, and God values excellence. I’ll let Him be the one to help me discern when I’m being selfish or irresponsible with the way I spend money. Jake, thank you for this interview. It’s good when your worship leader doesn’t count himself as a rockstar and accept this. Sometimes you can hear: “You should buy Strymons to play in the band.” Which is stupid, I think

Unless you’re playing on a huge stage with a good way to isolate your amp, I don’t see any advantages to a physical amp over a simulator.

I will say this IMHO the Big Sky was worth it the Timeline not so much... my DD-20 did 95% of what I use my Timeline for.... The Bigsky bloom and cloud verb are just better and presets are so useful which many cheaper RV-6 HOF etc just dont offer. Nut yes do you need it of course not God doesn't care neither should you if you cant justify it. (GFI stuff is as good and cheaper and you are seeing new pros using them and astronomer like in this video but even he says it is more boutique)

It’s really nice to hear a guitar player expressing himself out with his own individual tone. A lot of worship guitar players pedal boards consist of about 98% of the same pedals and settings. Sounds all the same lol I actually got rid of some pedals that I had. Yes they were the exact sound but I personally preferred having pedals to my own taste . I play better and can write my own songs without subconsciously trying to sound like other worship groups

OK $500 just for the pedal board. Not add the guitar or amp that is ridiculous. Why not just three pedals a overdrive, chorus, and delay?
@derrekmcfarlane7872
@derrekmcfarlane7872 5 лет назад
That's not ridiculous, he is not even using expensive pedals. If you look at other worship guitar players pedal boards some have pedals that are damn near 500 on there own. This pedalboard is very affordable
@HoodedChief
@HoodedChief 4 года назад
My pedal board I built this last summer cost around 1500 and that was all used pedals, and I feel I get my money's worth out of it. For how I play in worship, it meets and exceeds my needs and is an investment into my career. Alex invested in his career and his board suits the way he plays. For most worship leaders leading from electric guitar, one overdrive is not enough if you are running a clean amp as you can't just bend down and change the settings on the fly, you need a second stage to stack. Chorus is a non-essential, if I only had 3 pedals for a worship board a chorus would not make it lol. Delay is accurate, but also a dedicated reverb pedal to add more reverb than your amp provides is most of the time just a general expectation

Is not by entertainment you “grow a church”! That’s a false teaching! Don’t get me wrong , been a musician for over 20yrs and absolutely love music and worship, BUT, PLEASE, don’t talk like you want to grow customers list for your pub or venue! People go to church to learn more about God and worship together, REGARDLESS of the pedals or amps you use! It’s about God, personal experience and not entertainment! Sorry bro but though I subscribe to your channel I don’t really like sometimes the way your message comes across. Blessing

@JayBarroso
@JayBarroso 5 лет назад
@@Churchfront you're right buddy, indeed you did not say that. Is just that when you say "to grow your church" whenever the context is music, high tech, lightning etc, it just doesn't seem right..... Churches grow hopefully because people heard the Word of God and accepted Yeshua as Lord and Saviour. I think beautiful and powerful worship are the 'cherry' on top of the 'cake' , but not the 'cake' itself :) "... faith comes by hearing word of God" Don't get me wrong, I'm a worship leader myself and I literally devour hours of clips like these and really love the work you've been doing brother! You helped me a lot when I was setting up our PA-mixer-inears, etc. Keep up the good work bro!

So you're basically saying you have to be rich to be in a worship band.
@derykstearns
@derykstearns 5 лет назад
Not necessarily. Lots of worship bands are transitioning into a different type of sound that lots of cheap gear can’t produce. Helix LT and a cheap guitar could be had for $1100. You don’t have to be rich to have that. Just some hard work and saving up.
@derrekmcfarlane7872
@derrekmcfarlane7872 5 лет назад
This is pretty cheap compared to some big worship bands. And also this is like an ideal rig. Nothing wrong with a amp and guitar and then build from there. That's how I started. I used a j mascis jazzmaster and a fender mustang 1 amp. I have since moved up to a prs se custom 24 and a blackstar ht stage 60 mkii tube amp with some pedals. But it wasn't over night, I built uo to that
@rbeamish6492
@rbeamish6492 4 года назад
No. You play what you can afford, and get the best sound you can. I don't have an electric of my own yet, but the one time I have played electric in church I was using a borrowed Squier Bullet Strat into my Marshall AS50D acoustic amp, and I managed to get a pretty awesome clean tone. You can totally sound great on cheap gear, it just takes a little more work and careful choice than if you have a larger budget. If your worship leader is judging you by the names printed on your gear, they have the wrong attitude.

There are many options out there for under 300 bucks. Look at the squier bullet mustang. It’s 149.99. Guitars are very subjective I’ve played 1500 les Paul’s. 200 dollar squires. And I have owned a 40 dollar pawn shop strat. Play lots of different guitars and see which works best. If you take your time I’m sure you can find a guitar you like for 200.
