We put these on our front windows- really lovely!!!

My issue with shutters is they only work when shut, thus effectively negating the window. It is 1 step removed from just not putting in a window.

When it is cold outside, dark winter nights, yes shut them. My mom loves to open in the morning and shut at night.

Exterior Awnings > Interior Shutters

yep, calculated overhangs... deciduous trees... shade-screens... tilt/turn or casement for egress, otherwise picture, and never slide windows/doors... proper site placement & design... and even the "double-double" method for extreme cases.

This is true for summer, but awnings won't help much in the winter.

@@r.j.bedore9884 agreed, if i had to choose i'd prefer to plan to prevent unwanted heat gain rather than plan to receive passive heat benefits. Im from the desert so I might be biased lol

Would focus on a similar solution for the exterior or ceramic film for more UV and solar heat gain reduction

You should look at VIG glass windows. Luxewall and kolbe windows will have a residential product soon. R15-20

That’s would they said 2 years ago. Not available for residential homes last time I checked. And I bet you it’s gonna cost you arm and a leg.

Hopefully a non-plastic alternative to this shows up, it's a nice concept. Awnings/exterior shade is nice, but it doesn't provide the cold insulation increase this does.

look up the "double-double" window method. works great with thick envelope wall structures like staggered stud, hempcrete, rammed earth, & ICF. r20's +++ while maintaining your view & natural light.

Looks too traditional. Anything that would fit a modern style house?

if you are truly looking for energy efficiency then shutters need to be on the exterior of the window. weather stripping on the interior shutters? lol
@HowToBuildYourOwnHome
@HowToBuildYourOwnHome Месяц назад
Yes, these shutters do have a weather stripping inside, less maintenance on the inside and you can easily shut them.
