Great review of the products. But none of them are affordable in India. All are humorously expensive. I am using a small Camlin color box (for children) that I bought 24 years ago (similar to that Cotman design) and squeezing tube paints into that. i love it very much because it has stayed with me all these years and I am still finding it useful.

Very informative and good recommendations to beginners. The Pebeo ones are very pastel like and definitely not as vibrant as the others. The metal box would be a reason to pick them up though.

Thank you very much for taking the time to make this review. After watching it, I bought the Prima set in “Classics” but I really like that they have sets for different environments. Woodlands, Tropical, etc. It’d be nice to add each set as I can afford to so I can pack the appropriate colors for wherever we’re headed. Neat brand that I didn’t know about. Thanks!

In India you get an artist's edition 18 shades set of watercolors nicely packed in a tin box by camlin. And it comes for just US $3. Another students' edition set of 24 shades comes for just a little more than US $1.

I like the Koi or prima marketing ones so much better than windsor newton cotman. I have to really mine the paint out for cotman but the other two reactivate so easily!

Yvonne Sun That being said, I'm thinking of getting a Sakura Koi Pocket Box set, when I save up enough money, maybe the 24 or 36 set since I like to have more colors. I'm just entering highschool now though, maybe when I get a job

Sakura koi is really pigmented in my opinion too, that's the one I am getting, cuz right now I am using these super cheep ikea watercolors that I have had for like 5 years, and the are seriously not as pigmented as koi or any others that I have heard of.

I have the koi 24 sketchers box now, the quality isn't really that great, but I love how the layout is set up. My favorite part is the removable mixing tray because it goes over the paints and my mixes aren't over the top to drip down. I'm going to be getting st Petersburg watercolors next and I'm pretty happy about that, then hopefully upgrade to some artist grade paints after that!

Great video! I had been trying to figure out of refillable pans could be used in the winsor and newton cotman box and now I finally have an answer. Also great advice about the lid of bottom mixing wells being raised up, I hadn't thought of that. Thank you!

Only the WN pans will fit. They sell colours separately in pans too.
@pamela7411
@pamela7411 8 лет назад
Yeah I thought so... that's why I was looking for a good metal box I can use. I also don't like the way the pans in the cotman move around (they don't seem to fit well in mine) when I'm picking up color and I'd like some more mixing wells. So the hunt continues for a box with a raised lid... Leaning towards the Prima Marketing... We shall see. You have great advice!

My first watercolors were Louvre (I wanted Reeves but Louvre was cheaper), and when mum bought me WN Cotman pocket plus, I loved it. No more worrying about binder separating from the pigment and molding palettes, and it comes with a lot of mixing space. I stopped using them for several months when I got daniel smith paints, though I felt bad and now I'm thinking of using them for journal sketches.

Thank you for your video, I've been doing more and more real media stuff, and sort of accidently fell in love with watercolor but I can't justify shelling out a ton of money for it when its more just a "play" media for me, and not a media I sell in, I have a cake set from a well intended "art set" box I got as a gift many years ago that I started to play with on a whim and while they are hardly good I want to break into a better quality set.

for Dutch people, Hornbach has a brand of watercolor Lucas, that is 12 colors in a plastic box for 9,95 E. Or 24 colors in a metal box, in 2 different metal boxes for 19,95 a piece/set. They are more opaque, but they are very good student Quality.
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 лет назад
That's a good price!
@abbyrivers9971

it is, and Lindsay, from Frugalcrafter, has hadf a review with the artist Lucas and the student one.They had allmost the same results when tested. Beside the lightfastness, that isn t really tested ( to hard for non-manufactories). So it has a very good qualityu and is the cheapest one in Holland besides the brandless ones and the kids Crayola or Reeves. :-) I live to fas away and my bank doesn t offer the needed payment( don t earn enough money for creditcard uses). So I m waiting for a friend to travel to the city that has that shop, and take the watercolor back to me :-), I would buy, all3. they even have one for 24,95 E that has the 16 colors and half of the space is open to add more pans. www.hornbach.nl/shop/LUKAS-Kunstenaars-aquarelverf-in-metalen-kist-met-16-kleuren/3867077/artikel.html

they add sugar next to gum arabic to their watercolor.interesting. But the White nights are very nice for the amount of paint, and nice to have those big pans to refil with a tube paint. thanks for the youtube about it. There are so much different brands, so it s better to know what to buy and what not to buy, and save money for the better set of paints.

Old vid, I know. But viewers in the USA might be interested to know this: If your budget can stretch to $56 (as of July/18), you can get a 100% professional quality set of 12 from Da Vinci. The colour choices are great, all but 1 are single pigments, they're fully lightfast, just as strongly pigmented as W&N Artist w.c., or Dan.Smith (much more intense than 'Student grade' paints like Cotman), and you get 12 full pans. Honestly, paintings done with these could hold up in a museum for centuries. (No, I'm not associated with D.V.! I use mostly DanSmith tubes, but am very happy with the few D.V. tubes I have, and I think the 12 pan set is a screaming deal.) The White Knights set in this video are also a good deal, but the quality is not quite as good. I haven't looked closely at the W.K.'s 12 pan pigment choices, but in general, that brand makes some compromises. But still good for the money, and better than most student-grade paints. Here are the Da Vinci 12-pan set colours: Da Vinci Yellow PY154 Hansa Yellow Deep PY65 Da Vinci Red PR254 Alizarin Crimson (Quin) PV19 Permanent Rose (Quin) PV19 Phthalo Blue (Red Shade) PB15 Ultramarine (Green Shade) PB29 Sap Green PG7/PY42 Yellow Ochre PY43 Burnt Sienna PBr7 Burnt Umber PBr7 www.davincipaints.com/product-p/set-wcpan12fp1.htm

The Paul Ruben pan set is what I would start with and put in DV as it empties. The Paul Ruben is much cheaper than the DV boxes, at 30ish for 24 colors while being very close in qualitg. The DV's true value comes in their tubes. They sell 30ml tubes for $15! That is insane.

Teoh what you are referring to as a lower mixing area on the Van Gogh set I don't think is meant to be a mixing area at all. You can fix your mixing well problem by lining the edges with caulk, and also divide the big wells into smaller sections. I always line my palette boxes around the wells and outside edge to stop accidentally leaking paint in storage or transit. Just a thin layer will do the job.

Thank you! A great review, I really enjoy your style :) Have you tried the koh i noor 24 disc set by any chance? I'm just a beginner and impulse-bought one and I'm not sure whether I should return it and get one of these sets. It was $16.70 AUD and on eBay the Winson & Newton and White Nights palettes are about $30...

+Caroline Dinh I have not tried the Koh I Noor. Maybe you can just use it first, then upgrade to other brands.

If you're referring to the "Koh-I-Noor Watercolor Wheel Stack" they are labelled opaque on the bottom of the stack (I got duped). I have swatches of the 18-set but dont know where I cud post it for you ... I concluded that only 1/2 are usable.

Would you recommend the pebeo set for young children who would like a set similar to my Windsor Newton professional?
@teohyc

Pebeo is not that good. If you want affordable sets, go with Prima Marketing, Winsor Newton Cotman, Gansai Tambi.

Hello again, What do you think of the new Van Gogh portable palette design? It seems to me that it is less versatile. Also, have you ever tried Jane Davenport watercolours? Very affordable if you buy them from Michaels with a coupon. She claims they are artist quality. I did buy her set called "Brights" and I found it to be very vibrant indeed! I used it to make some mixing charts and to practice making secondary colours according to some of your other videos and I'm happy with the results. Oh, and when I made the chart using the grid, I followed the suggestion of one of your commenters, and I used the bottom triangle for the colours mixed in the palette applied to the paper wet on dry, and in the top triangle I mixed the colours on the paper. I wet the paper with clear water first and then applied the two colours I wanted to mix. Very interesting and I learned so much in such a short time! Thank you for all your demonstration videos!! PS The very first set I ever bought is the Winsor and Newton Cotman set just like yours and it's the one I just keep going back to.

Van Gogh has many palette designs so I don't know which one you're referring to. As for Jane Davenport, I've heard about the brand but has not use the paints before. I believe I saw Lindsey the Frugal Crafter making a video on that.

Thank you. There is a video about the new Van Gogh palette here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p853NVztotE.html When I try to find the Van Gogh box online from Canadian retailers, all I can find is the new style. PS I still plan to buy it, though. I think the price is worth it just for the brush!
@teohyc
@teohyc 6 лет назад
Thanks. I like that the box has 6 mixing wells. Having more mixing wells is very useful. As for its size, I can see that it's bigger compared to those 12 pan metal box and the Winsor Newton Cotman Sketcher Box. So it's not going to be as compact. As for the brush, once it gets worn, you have to buy a similar shape brush if you want to store it inside the box. Those 12 pan metal boxes can store more variety of collapsible brushes.

I was looking for beginner watercolours that isn't crappy. Thank you for doing this. I am wondering, with the tubes of watercolour, can you mix your own colours with them and put them in an empty pan or is that something that isn't advisable?
@teohyc
@teohyc 6 лет назад
The advantage of pre-mixing colours is you save time if you happen to use that colour a lot. But that's why paint manufacturers make so many colours, secondary such as orange, purples and greens. It is best not to pre-mix so that you can more versatility with the primary colours you've got.

Hello Teoh, when you replace colors with tube paints do you have to do anything special.
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 лет назад
+Yvon Brown After you have squeezed the tube paints into the pan, close the box but don't shut it tight, then put the box under the sun to dry the tube paints. Note that some colours will turn extremely hard when dried and almost unusable, e.g. Viridian, but that is usually quite rare.

Hi, Teoh. If I must choose between two cheap sketching sets, Sakura Koi field set and Pebeo 12 half pan set, which one would you recommend?
@teohyc

+Teguh Setiawan Sakura Koi is better. Pebeo paints are really poor quality unless you want the metal box.

okay. thanx for the information. then i guess i'll pick Sakura Koi for my sketching set. it's easily available at local stores here. though, the pebeo's metal box is really tempting :D

Hi Yi Chie, thank you so much for keep sharing, it really helpful. I'd like to ask if I can get higher level, u think is it better to get mix like 2 or 3 brand as W & N, Daniel smith? Which color brand you think is more transparent but also bright? Did u try mission gold? and one more question, u recommend tube or pan if I dont need to take out? Is it exactly same effect ?
@teohyc
@teohyc 7 лет назад
+novem yip You can mix brands without problems. Some artists prefer certain colours from other brands. Each brand will have their own transparent and opaque paints. You just have to read their paint label description online. I find pans to be more convenient. Tubes should be more convenient to those who need to mix large mixtures quickly. I've used Mission Gold, still using actually. You can see my review at www.parkablogs.com/picture/review-mission-gold-watercolors-9-tube-set

White Nights has the best quality so I guess probably that. I like Winsor Newton Cotman for the size of the box though. If you're a beginner, I recommend the Cotman set. You can replace the paints later on with higher quality paints.

Between the box Winsor&Newton Cotman with waterbrush (14 colors) and Kuretake Transparent watercolor set (14 colors) with a waterbrush and an ink pen, which one would you recommend for travel? Thanks!

No, they're travel palettes with halfpans. What do you think about replacing the Kuretake's with Winsor's once they're used up? (I say it because I think the Kuretake's has more space to fit the waterbrush + pen) Thank you again!

What's your opinion on the very cheap prang and mont marte watercolor pans? I think they're around 10 dollars for 12 colors
@teohyc
@teohyc 6 лет назад
In general, for really cheap paints, the colours might fade, some are chalky, and some are too dry and difficult to dissolve. If you want affordable ones, check out Prima Marketing's watercolour sets. I've several reviews on them too. www.parkablogs.com/tags/prima-marketing

@TonyThimble 6 лет назад
St. Petersburg (or Leningrad) has student paints under the name "sonnet" and artist grade colours under "white nights". I recommend them the most because they are light fast and artist grade for half or a quarter the price of other artist grade paints.

KazeChama yes they are lovely! I have a 24 set and a vintage 12 set (not the same colors as the 12 set they have now) but they are extremely pigmented. They are 1/3 cheaper than other artist grade watercolors, but I am thinking of getting some mijello gold watercolors as I think they would mix well with the white nights. I highly recommend them!

I have the Winsor & Newton Cotman set. I bought it for its compactness too. Didn't yours come with a small paint brush? Mine did. Also, the Corman set came with a white. I don't know what that's for. Doesn't white make watercolors "muddy"?
@bugeyedmonster2
@bugeyedmonster2 6 лет назад
White is for if you're doing gouache style painting, where you do actually use the white, instead of the 'white' of your paper. If you look at some old children's book illustrations, that's primarily the style used. Wikipedia is a good starting point... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gouache
