@@shmick6079 There's a number of different theories, but one of the more common is the Irish word "rout" (pronounced root) which means to make a great bellowing noise, typically referring to cattle, but the translation would be: We root for the team = We cheer for the team I imagine most American's would find the sentence "Scoring a root with a Shazza at the pub..." a little bizarre as well /grin

Great reaction guys. Most of the clips you've watched here are illegal actions, but it's a tough game at the best of times. Just yesterday, a player on the team I support suffered broken ribs, a punctured lung and a lacerated spleen in a marking contest. No harm intended, but he just copped a knee in the ribs by accident. Don't be put off by these actions. It's a great game and has been since 1858. Cheers, Glenn.

putting the head high contact aside, most aussie rules players have been playing since they were 5 or so. combine this with ultimate fitness, these guys can take a big bump in their stride (barring bad injuries). A bit like a boxer can take a lot of contact. FYI, on the weekend, Christian Petracca (Melbourne) suffered 4 broken ribs, lacerated spleen and punctured lung (all from the same incident) and after a short break came back and played half a game. Might I suggest that your first look at "game play" be to watch the highlights of last years Grand Final (Championship Game) between the Brisbane Lions and the Collingwood Magpies (I bet this was the team you were warned off from supporting?), it was a great game and shows many of the great skills/plays/athleticism and excitement that this game embodies (best sport in the world IMHO). Teacher asked her class what their dads did for a living. One by one, they answered until it was 'Little Johnnys' turn, who stood up and said: "My dad is a naked Go-Go dancer in a Gay Bar". The teacher, horrified, hustled Little Johnny out into the corridor and asked: "Is that true, that your dad is a naked Go-Go dancer in a Gay Bar?" Little Johnny sheepishly replied: "No miss, - he really plays full forward for Collingwood, but I was too embarrassed to admit it!"

It's the same in most Aussie sports, there are risks. But charging an opposing player with intent to risk serious bodily harm is a no no and players who indulge in the practice ultimately destroy their own careers. You can hear the crowd boo them as they continue playing. No one goes to a game wanting to see such bad sportsmanship.

An interesting factoid about the AFL... It is the *ONLY* professional sporting league in the world, that does not allow the umpires{referees/officials} the option of banning a player from the remainder of the game... If a player indulges in sufficiently bad (nasty) play he may be reported/referred to a tribunal that can ban him from playing for the next game (or 2 or 3 or ... 24 or permanent) but that is ONLY applied AFTER the event. The player continues in the current game, even if he's deliberately injured an opponent who cannot continue. This has a possible detrimental effect that in an important match (Possibly a Grand Final) a player who is nearly the last chosen on his side and is retiring soon, could choose to target a Star player on the opposition, and accept the penalty that would've been applied but is meaningless ("Eh, I was going to quit anyway!") I don't *KNOW* that this has occurred previously but the possibility is there.

its important to note that although it appears that at the time there isn't much consequence for a lot of these actions - there is a "reporting" and "tribunal" system for actions which are illegal. umpires can report players both during the game and also after the game (reviewing footage etc). there may not be any serious in-game penalty at the time but a lot of the actions in this compilation result in people being suspended for multiple weeks or having fines imposed.

I think if you look into it, you’ll find that wearing helmets can actually cause more damage & a higher chance of TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) & CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy). CTE is the result of repeated mild TBIs occurring over months or even years. The false confidence of head gear can encourage leading with the head in tackles, causing higher rates of concussions. Without helmets players may be more cognizant of the potential for head injury. I’m no expert, of course, & I’ve only read a couple of articles but it’s very interesting all the same.

There are multiple efforts to tame this sort of thing down in the game, and they aren't perhaps being celebrated as much as they used to. Older footy players are suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy and the class actions are coming in Australia (the same way as they are with retired NFL players) With the exception of the accidental head clashes in these videos most of these "bumps" would have led to suspensions for the player involved (missing one or more games). Barry Hall (the Sydney Swans player in red/white) who bunched Brent Staker (West Coast Eagles - yellow/blue) got a six week suspension. It was a bit of a moot point as later in the game he (Barry) broke his forearm running into the fence around the oval Go celebrate the best marks... that stuff is impressive

Australian rules football is safer from a concussion point of view than either of the rugby's and american football. Thats for two reasons: First, you dont get hit in the head that much in aussie rules. Getting hit hard is the exception these days rather than the rule, whereas the point of the other 3 "football" codes is to hit your opponent hard (ive played rugby union and aussie rules at school and club levels). Second, because youre not wearing a helmet or padding in australian rules you dont get fooled into thinking your invulnerable. There are some guys who can crash and bash on the aussie rules field but theyre the exception. So you are actually trying to make sure you dont seriously injure yourself. Because youre not all padded up you have no illusions about how vulnerable you are and your judgement isnt skewed by padding. Tacklers are just as vulnerable as their targets and tacklers mostly watch what they are doing. Bad collisions are almost always accidents, and theyre not that common. An NFL player, being all padded and helmeted, has the illusion they are protected, so they hit harder, especially since every starting play involves most of the players hitting each other. But doing that means your brain is bouncing around in its shell and getting damaged. in rugby its a point of honour to hit hard, even without pads. Rugby forwards are basically trying to physically intimidate their opponents and its always been a thing in rugby that that means hitting hard and ignoring your own injuries. None of that happens in Aussie rules anymore, but before about 25 years ago it was common. You do get CTE in professional australian rules players but its nowhere near as bad as rugby and NFL. For what its worth Ive been knocked unconscious 3 times playing rugby union but never playing aussie rules, even though I played aussie rules longer. With Aussie rules, the main long term physical effects are your knees and your hands. An aussie rules ball is heavier than an NFL or rugby ball and that ball means when you get to my age your hands feel like they are on fire on cold mornings.

There has been a big crackdown in recent years and contacts such as those in the video rarely occur now. Having said that, what was in the video, from around eight to fifteen years ago was not as bad as regular incidents in the 1960s,1970s and 1980s when the game really was brutal. Few players get reported (cited for rule breaches and suspended for games if found guilty) twice in their careers these days but in the past there were quite a few reported more than ten times. The record is held by David Rhys-Jones, a nice guy but certainly a victim of "white line fever", who was reported 25 times.

Well I have seen a Legend of the AFL whose brain was donated after he died after a long life, to science. They found evidence of CTE. The Barry Hall punch was justified in my opinion. Staker had been tagging and harrassing him all game and the umpires were refusing to award Baz any free kicks that should've got and so he had no choice but to teach this pest a lesson. I think he got suspended for 9 games, but i blame the umpires for letting it get to that point when they could've nipped it in the bud by paying free kicks against Staker in the first place. My sentiments are very similar with Scarlo and that pest Ballantyne. Geelong Cats are the greatest team of all because we play the game the way it should be played. We barrack for a team, we support a team, we go for a team; but *we do not* "root" for a team. In aussie slang, to have a root means to have sex. If you have a quickie or one night stand and you kick him/her out immediately afterward, ya call it a root n boot!

Concussion injuries are an issue for NFL, AFL, and Rugby football codes. One point of view is that pads, helmets, and other protective gear used in NFL results in more risk to the players because people in protective gear may hit harder because they feel the hit less. There is also the psychological aspect of hitting harder because you feel more protected. Would be interesting to see if anyone has undertaken studies to measure impact forces across football codes.

4:48 Big bad Barry Hall. A brutal individual who was on suspension more than on the field.

I suppprt the might navy Blues Carlton. My suggestion, pick a team bases on the team colour's, mascot or even team song. As long as you enjoy the game

You dont see much of these anymore. The AFL has made the game much softer where they have pretty much eliminated bumps and certain tackles and give players lengthy suspensions Every week you see players suspended now for even minor infringements. The game has certainly changed for the worse with numerous stupid rules that have been introduced over the last 5 seasons where the rules and the way its officiated is the worst I have seen in my 50yrs of following this sport. Even the umpires are in the news every week with their poor decisions. This game is the most electric in the world but it also has the worst rules of any sport which is poorly officiated which has all come down to adding 4 field umpires on the ground at one time where each one has their own interpretation of the rules and dont know if they are coming or going. The game was much better officiated with just the 2 field umpires. It eliminates many grey areas of the rules but the AFL love to screw this game up. Its like comparing a lamborghini and a volks wagon. A lambo is hand made where a volks is mass produced. Our umpires now are mass produced and when you mass produce something the quality deteriorates.

4.40 was Barry Hall he was a professional boxer and used to cop shite of other players all the time trying to rile him up . If you watch the Australian rules explained clip it explains the sport to you and you can see some of the unique skills to our great game . Go Tiges

Much of what is here is fair play. Not all of it. Also because it is a fast game the chance of misjudgment in action is higher. So if you are punching for the ball to defend against someone marking (catching) it, and accidentally punch the guy trying to mark it, were you deliberately targeting the guy to take him out or was it an accident? If you were going to shepherd someone, (hip or should bump someone on the opposing team trying to get the ball) did you hit his head or body? Did you mean to hit his head or body? Were you really going up for the mark or were you seeking to hurt the other guy going for the mark with no effort to get the ball yourself? I know a lot of people jump to the emotional "Oh that was really bad and they are really hurt" as a means to justify the conclusion that the person needs to be punished but often it is not illegal or anything that they did wrong. You can do something maliciously for sure and illegally and you should be deterred from that if you do but a hard bump or hit does not mean you did anything wrong necessarily. Sometimes small bumps and hits are illegal and bit hits and bumps are legal. It is a quick, hard and fast game. Good to play and great to watch.

its beleived this hits, although not proved yet, but many rugby players, similiar game, are starting to show signs in later life of motor nueron desease. if you not sure what that is, stephen hawkins had the same or very similiar. we have just lost a rugby player, rob burrow, i have also just lost a work friend, our manager, femal boss, from diagnosis till passing was 4 years, she passed last year

The majority of these are illegal and result in lengthy suspensions . Long term concussion is being taken very seriously by the AFL , its ended a few careers recently and some of the greats have come out and talked about the long term effects they have suffered . Fortunately today there isnt as many of these big hits now .

Whether the woke or medical or other groups want to admit it there is the gladiator in nearly all of us and this is a perfect example. Other sports such as rugby etc. have the same.

Did you notice that if the hit was legal no matter if you get knocked out or that badly injured that you can't walk off the field by yourself the game dose not stop.

These type of hits are pretty much all outlawed now. They still occur, but the penalties are large.

The AFL is trying to clean it up a bit. I feel that if it is in the 'spirit' of the game and the player is not critically hurt the umpire should definitely report it for a suspension.

Pretty tame compared to what what football was like years ago. More umpires and cameras mean most of the illegal stuff has been taken out of the game.

there's also no send off rule so any outlandishly thugish play the aggressor continues to play out the game & usually becomes the target for the opposition for the rest of the game
