I live in Ontario, Canada, and was introduced to the VFL in the 1970s when matches from Channel 7 were (somehow) shown on the PBS station in Detroit. Australian Footy (stop with the "Aussie Rules" stuff, OK??) is the greatest team sport in the world, in my far-from-humble opinion. Really appreciated seeing the comparisons of the grounds they used this past season - Thanks for this!!
I'm a Melburnian. You're right that people would call it "footy" here. My dad and uncle played in the seniors in the VFL... but thanks to a PE teacher/football coach who was a bit of a tool I played "soccer" - which some of us would provocatively call "football" around footy players. I can tell you that people told me I should play "football" and would use "Aussie Rules" to clarify when I said I did! That was a common distinguishing name around me at that time. Footy more likely means rugby (probably league) in Sydney and Brisbane. Channel 9 here aired a different "The Footy Show" in QLD and NSW for NRL fans when it aired an AFL version for the rest of the country. People seem to say "AFL footy/football" when required now.
I agree. I can't think of a situation where I'd like to share with one other team let alone 4 other teams. There seem to be a lot of secondary stadium that can be refurbished to house teams. The only question is who would remain.
It's definitely a shame that Melbourne is split between two stadiums, I like that in London all their football clubs have different grounds. But at least the two stadiums are beautiful! I'm Canadian and new to the league I absolutely love how these stadiums look would love to go to one
I live in the UK and support the Western Bulldogs , if I ever get the chance to come to Australia and watch them play I would enjoy it . I wish the AFL could come here and play games at Lord's or Edgbaston , Trent bridge or one of the other cricket grounds!
An AFL game at Trent Bridge would be an interesting one. Would definitely like to see some exhibition games outside of Australia though. Like in Ireland, the UK, New Zealand and others.
5:03. Bowl stadiums often end up looking lifeless, even with a good crowd in, but the 'G' always looks majestic. Whenever I see it it's hard not to think of all the great and different eras it's been through, with antique styled member's stands and modern facilties, and it still retains that class.
For Anyone who might be thinking "Where is Jiangwan Stadium in Shanghai?", Basically, Due to COVID, The Game was cancelled in 2020. And this Year in 2021, It will be Replaced by a Game at Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns.
Never say never but more likely to be at a rectangular ground - maybe the new Sydney Football Stadium (SFS) College Football has been played in Sydney. 2016 California GB v Hawaii at Stadium Australia (AnZ Stadium) drew 66k, and in 2017 Stanford v Rice 33k at the SFS
Have you produced a video of the NRL stadiums? I sure as a Victorian based Aussie you wouldn’t show bias against the Rugby league. Especially when Melbourne dominates all the major sporting leagues in Australia in 2021.
I don't think so. But Geelong have kicked up fusses to make concession rules twice. 1 - Favour the minor premiers in the finals 2 - Marks only apply if they travel 10m
Cazalys stadium doesn’t just have St Kilda play at it it also host the Western Bulldogs and the Gold Coast suns but also had Melbourne, Sydney Brisbane and Adelaide play at it in 2019,2020 and 2021. Not trying to be annoying just letting you know
@@damiencasaccio5513 2005 and 2006; Sydney vs West Coast. West coast home games, but at the MCG. WCE failed to be premiers in 93 because of the moving around. If GC gets the home game at a GF, they deserve a HOME game, at home. Not in Melbourne, where the dons have home-ground advantage despite being an away team. It's high time to play a GF somewhere else.
The old Oriole Stadium in Auburn and the Blacktown Olympic Park, Daikyo Stadium, Gold Coast and the Geelong facilities have all been used for Spring Training by Asian operations. Australia is too far and expensive for MLB clubs.
I like the A-League. But I don't know about the AFL. I don't understand Australia Rules Football. I've only watched one highlight video and was just super confused. lol.
Yeah, it can be confusing if you are not familiar with the rules. That's why it gets the derisive nickname "aerial ping pong" from those that aren't into it.
@@SuperSirianRigel there's a great little video 'What is the AFL' that explains some basics of the game and a channel called :Footy A 2 Z' that dives deeper into the game... If this help....
Not so sure that the number of cricketers hinted at here played AF in their offseason. If you go to the MCG Long Room there is a photo of Bradman's Invincibles all decked out in baseball uniforms after a game. Several players from that team and era would have cut it as professionals. Look up the details for Neil Harvey and his talented brothers. If you look up records of a letter held at Australian Museum Sydney you will find a letter written by the great Victor Trumper to a schoolboy that wrote to him. Victor had played baseball with the Paddington Club at a time when the Moore Park area had several sports played. It was fitting that in 2014 the SCG was converted to a MLB standard facility to host the season opening series between LAD and ARI. It commemorated what had happened a century earlier. Time lapse imagery of the conversion is on YT.
The MCG also holds / held a record for a baseball game attendance. The 56 Olympics featured baseball as an exhibition sport. A game was played before a packed house after the Opening Ceremony took place.
I think the grand final should be hosted else where from time to time, one year in MCG the next else where so on forth, Take it to NZ, ANZ ..... spread the sport
I think the Grand Final should be moved around, but instead of awarding it to the top team on the ladder, the AFL could do what the NFL does with the Super Bowl, and schedule the game years on advance. Also, Carn the Dogs!
@@sovietonion72 yes, I can understand the 16 minute quarters argument, but I think the “iT sHouLd bE In tHe dAy” argument is stupid, and only made by a bunch of butthurt Victorians who can’t stand doing things that they aren’t used to.
Kadina Park just sounds better than GMHBA Stadium. All stadiums today are named after the construction company, if I'm honest it's very stupid why can't it keep the original name
As an interstate man who supports an interstate team myself, I think the grand final should stay at the g. Sharing it around would never work and the atmosphere at the smaller stadiums wouldn't be the same as at the g
I agree as a American AFL Premiership Gran Final always should be at the MCG . But if they keep your state of Victoria closed it should move until they end this insane lockdown in your area
Mate, the MCG is the home of football. It's like saying, "let the highest seeded club host the FA Cup final." Nah bro, when over 50% of players are Victorian, Melbourne is the birthplace of the game, and *most* importantly, the only stadium capable of seating 100k spectators is the MCG, just leave it
As soon as another stadium can hold the same capacity of the MCG the Grand Final should stay put. The game is always sells out so why would the AFL want to lose out on 30k+ worth of tickets , it's millions of dollars.
Yes but you think about it, even if it was held at Metricon, 75K is nothing compared to the millions of people watching it all over the country, so yeah, it should just be the team that finishes higher, gets to host it, can’t see any arguments against that.
@@themaster7552 yeah there ratings and broadcast money is good but Optus stadium is the next best Stadium in capacity and the AFL would lose $14 to 17 Million in ticket sales on average if at metricon it would lose $26 to 28 Million. If we use 2019 as the example the AFL brought in a total of $793 Million but after all revenue, operating costs, Investments into AFLW and Grassroot distributions, the AFL total profit for 2019 was $27.9 Million. So without another stadium with a capacity of 90k or more it's not financially viable to host it away from the MCG
@@themaster7552 the TV deal was part of that $793 million and still only had $26 million left to put aside for a rainy day like last year when the AFL lost $30 to 40 million after the broadcast deal... In the end the AFL is a business and a Grandfinal at the MCG is it's rainy day fund unless we have every stadium at a capacity of 90k+ it's not a financially viable option.
Remember that the MCC leeches take up 25,000 seats themselves and are unable to be sold by the AFL. Any other stadium would not need to accommodate them. 70,000 capacity is a very reasonable number. Hell, even 60k is fine to have a discussion about. if 60,000 capacity is enough for the Champions League Final and Olympics, it's more than enough for an obscure sport's pseudo-national league final match.
I wish AFL stadiums were more narrow that way the sport would fit perfectly in rectangle stadiums at least American stadiums which tend to be kind of oval in shape (College Stadiums at least), the main reason why Aussie Rules hasn't speared WorldWide in spite of being spectacle (Iam not an Australian), and Cricket Nations don't really ..ummm...they suck ok
