Fond memories of Rhein Main. Lived there from 1959-1962 as an Air Force brat. Visited it in 1973 as an Army wife. Wish I could have gone back before it closed. It was a wonderful part of my childhood that I will never forget.

I was stationed there from 1982 to 1988 as a member of the 435 SPS. What a great Air Force base! I can't believe it's gone.

stationed at Rhein Main from 97-01. Loved every minute of it. I worked in the PAX terminal for a year then worked on the commanders staff in CCX as the reserve coordinator and facility manager (among other things). My wife and I think about our good times in Germany often.

I was stationed with the 435 Civil Engineering Squadron(MAC) from Jan 1978-Jan 1980. I saw many changes including my time as a dependent in the 1956-1964 time. I would enjoy talking to any of the former 435CES personnel stationed there as well during my time. Been back many times recently in 2010 and all but the hotel and one star building are all gone. We reminisce about the base frequently. John F. Robertson, Capt, USAF(Retired), Tacoma, WA.

My first base, 1989 -1991, 435th APS, the Gulf War airlift was unbelievable. I worked between 60 and 80 planes during each 12 hour shift, and I worked every C5 and C141 we had in the inventory. We went from 10 August 90 to sometime around Christmas that year with no days off. Ramstein got all the press in Stars and Stripes/AFN, nobody talked about us at all, even though Ramstein's APS unit was almost entirely TDY to Rhein Main. I remember watching the hostages come back from Iran when I was in grade school seeing the old tower with "Gateway to Europe" lit up on it and thinking "I'd like to visit there some day." I didn't have it on my dream sheet, but I went to drive past that old tower damn near every day. Be careful what ya wish for I guess. The 435th was one of my best units, along with the 731st and 721st AMOGs. Got to see Europe, meet Bob Hope, and it was my first of two massive airlifts, because I was at Charleston AFB SC in 2003-2005 when Dover's warehouse roof collapsed and we moved everything though the 437th. I still have the 79 Firebird I bought on base back in '90. Lots of fond memories, and some not so fond ones, but they're fewer. Germany was great for a 19 year old farm kid, and I got a nice big chunk of the Berlin Wall. I'd do it all again if given the possibility.

Rhein Main was my first base after Basic and Tech School. I was there for 3 years (1952-55) . It was the perfect base for a young country kid, affording me a chance to travel throughout Germany and Europe. At that time, only 7 years after WW-2, an American GI was highly paid when compared to German civilians. (The mark was 4.20 to the dollar, cigarettes were 80 cents a carton, trains and streetcars were free to US personnel, beer and wine 50 pfennigs a glass, so my $80 monthly pay went a long way!) I was in the 60th Air Police Sq and worked Highway Patrol and town patrol in Frankfurt...anyone remember the Reichshof or Mair Gustl?.

I was stationed there as a Law Enforcement airman with the 435th Security Police Squadron from 1986 thru 1989, what a great learning experience from my first base! I am still in touch with many awesome Germans and fellow Air Force folks from there. Loved the video, sad though.

Thanks for all of the positive feedback. Ken James and I put several months worth of effort into producing this documentary. Anyone who was stationed in Germany during the Cold War era knows how important Rhein-Main Air Base was to the US military. Ken and I worked really hard to make sure that we did justice to all of the men and women in uniform who served at RMAB through the years. It was a real honor to put this together.

And thank you so very much! I just found this, and it filled me with sadness to find all the bases I lived at as a dependant are gone. I thought for sure at least Rhein Main would survive. Alas, no.

Thanks for creating and sharing this. I was Stationed there, Jan 1981 - Jan 1984 with the 435th SPS and got to see a lot of things too. Things that I'm PROUD to have been in. My Uncle was one of the people that went there to build the Dorms in 1945 - 1947. Sorry RMAB is no longer there, but there's some family history there :) Thanks again for bringing back fond memories.

As a German that is thankful to the incredible services provided by our friends from the US I am very disappointed that absolutely nothing is left from the Airbase or Gateway Gardens to remind the younger Germans of the facilities that used to be here. Even the entrance gate to Gateway Gardens is finally removed. Our local politicians did a great job in erasing that part of history.

I was stationed there from 1974 to 1977. A great posting and a proud history to be a part of. After that, Rhein-Main wouldn't let go of me. A PCS to Turkey sent me through there in both directions several times, along with several TDYs through there. In Oct 2012 I flew from Helsinki to Frankfurt/Main to spend a few days with German friends from my tour of duty in the 70s. The only landmark I could be sure of from the air was the Luft Bruke memorial . . . marking one of America's proudest moments in history. I was TDY to Berlin when the officers' club was bombed; lucky for me because I would have been standing near the point of explosion as I usually was at that exact time every day. Had to ride the Troop Train to Berlin, as every person going there on official business was required to do, to assert and validate US right and obligation to man and supply its garrison in Berlin. It was the cutting of rail and highway connections that necessitated the Berlin Airlift.

As a citizen of Frankfurt, born in 1964, I grew up nearby the air corridor of Rhein-Main, so I could join the final approach of C-130 and the (damned loud!) C-141 and C-5. Until now one of my hobbys are airplanes, and the "Hercules" is one of my favourites.

1976-78 435th CES. Heavy equipment operator (PrimeBEEF). Didn't realize how good I had it at the time. 18 y/o skinny young punk/rebel w/o a clue. Didn't know the history of the base nor what a sweet duty station it was. Off duty, I stayed drunk on that great German beer & stoned on hash. What a frickin' waste! The two winters I spent there were brutal. Especially '77. It seemed like every-other night ~ 02:00 it would snow like an S.O.B. Our job was to clear the flightline then the base streets.

I lived in Frankfurt, Germany as a dependent at Carl Schulz Siedlung from 1995-2000 and with the Army gone we went to Rhein Main for everything. I cannot express how emotional this video made me. I had many friends that attended Tuner Halverson Elementary and we saw many a movie at the theater but the part that shattered me was seeing the chapel. We went to church there every Sunday. We played soccer for RMAB Junior Rockets and had such a wonderful time there, God I miss it! What a great tribute video this is!

My first Air Force assignment from 1983-86. What an exciting time that was for a young me. In many ways the best assignment I had during my 21 years. I occasionally fly into the Frankfurt Airport and it is so strange to see there is literally nothing left (except the hotel). It’s all an air freight terminal now.

That was certainly a hopping place. I remember arriving there in January of 1982 on a 707 that was packed with troops, dependents and little babies just screaming. We departed from McGuire, in New Jersey, and my feet were killing me from that long flight, wearing Class A shoes. Two years later, when I PCS'd, I took the bus to Rhein Main and decided to take a civilian flight back home. So I took a Taxi to Frankfurt International and got on Lufthansa 747 to JFK. I decided to treat myself and it was relatively inexpensive.

In 1983 I joined the Open Day on the RMAB where this teribble accident happened: A Canadian F-104 crashed nearby the Autobahn and six people died. But I also can remember the 1991 U.S.-Airlift to Iraq, when we sometimes need to hold tight our pictures on the wall during the night! Anyway, best greeting to all of the retired (or on duty) airmen, pilots, crew members and all the other people stationed on RMAB.

I flew into Rhein Main on a C-141 from Tinker AFB non stop with a mid air refuel. We were on our way to Riyadh. Anyway, they off loaded us onto a bus and instead of taking us into the terminal I remember sitting on that bus for FIVE hours until they finally loaded us back onto the C-141 and away we went.

To continue from below. '77 winter was so bad that the Ohio River froze back home. When I returned home spring of '78, there was still piles of snow in parking lots. Not all was bad though. I meet some great people, saw some stunning scenery and castles and took in several killer concerts that I never would have had the chance to meet or see if I hadn't joined the USAF. I wish I had it to do again! Only this time not suffer from cranial/rectal insertion.
