Its due to our presidential election system being massively flawed the electoral college is why trump had 3 million less total votes then Hilary in 2016 but since he got over 50% of the votes in enough states that the electoral college let him win the 2016 election. Who are these pollsters asking? My classmates and I did a poll in Philly of 120 people, in a very liberal area, and 68 out of 120 people said they'd be voting for Trump, 3 for RFK and 49 for Harris. Each poll has its own margin of error. the margins are typically anywhere from 1.5 percent to 3.5 percent. Check the small print at the bottom of the poll graphics and you will see the margin.

So it varies poll to poll, but for this particular poll (IPSOS) it's a margin of error of 2.2 percentage points at the 95% confidence level with 2045 adults (different ages, genders, races, income levels, etc) surveyed per state. This is why polls are so meaningless nowadays. It's such a small number of people that it can never paint a true picture.

@@Dkeys88 The "margin of error" is also biased by the sample size and methodology. Polls are a good guess but in matchups as close as this they're pretty useless.

The Margin of Error (MoE) differs from poll to poll and depends on the number of people polled - it is usually published just below the graph. Typically polls of 5-600 people are about /- 5%. Polls of 1000 people are about +/- 3%, polls of 2000 people are about +/- 2%. So what you do is add 3 and subtract 3 from each result and that gives you the range of probable outcomes. If Kamala was at 49% and Trump 46% - with a 3% MoE that means if everyone was asked the real result would probably have Kamala somewhere between 46-52% and Trump somewhere between 43-49%. So it means there is still a decent possibility that Trump would actually still be leading. The other important parameter or caveat is rarely mentioned - the Confidence Interval (C I). This is usually 90 or 95% and defines the probability of the actual result falling outside the MoE. So a poll with a MoE of 5% and C I of 90% means that there is a 10% chance that the result could be outside the MoE. Many folks say that they don't believe in polls, when what they mean is that they don't understand them. A poll is NEVER wrong. Every poll reflects the answers of the people they asked to the questions that were asked at the time they were asked, according to the methodology that was used. The problem is that uninformed people try to extrapolate, or extend the finding of the poll and apply it to everyone that wasn't asked, but without understanding the two critical caveats of every poll - MoE and C I. If a poll result does not include those two parameters - it is just crap and should be completely ignored, just like you wouldn't take the opinions of folks at your local bar and apply them to the whole state or country. The MoE calculation is standard and its purpose is exactly to mitigate and define the sampling error that you strangely suggest makes polls useless. The problem is when folks try to extrapolate the results of a poll in definitive terms, or apply the results outside of the scope of the poll. The poll only represents the feelings of the respondents to the questions that were asked at the time they were asked. Anyone critiquing a poll retrospectively after an event that occurs 3 months in the future says more about the limited comprehension of the critic than the accuracy of the poll.

It's polling data. It's showing trends, which used to be bad for Biden and they showed that too. In fact, if anything the media hurt Biden by questioning his age endlessly and not focusing on his historic legislative accomplishments, while giving the rich old rapist a free pass to spew his familiar brand of dementia and lies all over the place. Reporting on real polling data (and cautiously repeating that this trend is not conclusive) is not intellectual dishonesty.
