After years of watching Red Bull Rampage from afar, our new-guy behind the lens, Max Rhulen and myself (Rob) were fortunate enough to pay a visit to Virgin, UT for the first week of the revered 2023 Red Bull Rampage freeride event. Thanks to Can-Am we were able to gain special access to the event site and witness the 18 athletes and their dig crews carve in their lines for this year’s contest. Since Can-Am ambassador and ten-time Rampage competitor Tyler McCaul was sitting this year’s event out due to a recent ankle fusion, we were able to wrangle him into being our co-host and historian as we ventured into the hallowed grounds for our first time. It was an amazing experience for a first timer from the UK to get this sort of a tour and time with the riders, their dig crews and to see the absolute massiveness of this event first-hand. Check out the interviews from several legendary riders and their diggers as they prepare for the craziest mountain bike event in the world!
As the 2023 venue had been previously used five times - including the most recent 2022 event - most riders did not have to start from a blank canvas, although some riders who were new to the venue opted to anyway. Due to heavy rains falling on the arid hillside over the summer, soils had shifted, and rain ruts had developed, so there was still plenty of work to do to get the lines dialed in, even for riders committed to riding the same line down the hill as the year prior.

Slope style at rampage SUCKS!! Gee Atherton had the right idea, just massive drops and huge jumps, the way big mountain/freeride is supposed to be... the insane jump Adolf Silva did on his first run years ago was wayyyyy more gnarly than seeing someone do a flip-whip.
@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf 9 месяцев назад
We're huge big mountain fans too, but there's still something to be said for slopestyle tricks with the gnarly exposure and large jumps. Maybe the perfect run consists of a combination of both?

@@TheLoamWolf I think it would be solid to run two events where one it is still the true freeride and then one that is more slope style. There is enough competitors whom would be available etc there and two very clear categories and would allow even more riding and coverage and awesomeness.

@@Shreddingbikeparks It isn't that they aren't huge/gnarly etc. It is that it is very different riding type and style. I can watch slopestyle plenty of places but I can't watch a lot of true freeride like back when this first started and Bender was about also etc etc. Edit: to note I have at least 1/2 size of the slope style hits when I was 18-19 but there wasn't any public riding parks with such features to try. Now these days, no as I haven't ridden hardly as much for the last decade or so. But back then I would of been dumb enough to at least try some of them.

Unfortunately Rampage is becoming nothing more than a vertical slopestyle competition and the big mountain free riders will be pushed out by the Pro slopestyle crowd. Brendog might be the last of the riders doing what Rampage was originally created for.

16:00 I'd call that a mattock. One tip: On steeper gradients you can also use one as a rough rake to pull loose material down the hill if you lay it on its side and drag it. Edit: You could do the same on flatter terrain but then it probably makes sense to grab a better tool with a longer handle.

It makes sense, and is why there's the mandatory "rest" (or ride) day, but seems like most riders are still working pretty damn hard.

Rampage is getting out of control between the 60 ft gap jump Gees 70 ft drop or the Lilly pad gap! Is it really worth maiming or killing yourself for a trophy and money? I enjoy watching these guy but come on once something really bad happens they will shut it down and I don't want to see that.
@kenwood5535
@kenwood5535 9 месяцев назад
these comments need to stop, rampage isnt any more dangerous than world cup dh and these guys want to do it. Are we stopping FMX or Moto, or F1 or Nascar......If these guys don't want to ride they don't have to.
@slayer6936
@slayer6936 9 месяцев назад
@kenwood5535 Okay, I don't see 60-foot gap jumps with them falling down a cliff if they miss or 70 ft drops or that Lilly pad gap jump Brandon F. Is going tod Brandon made the 60-foot jump today by a ft or 2 I see none of that in downhill racing at all because I watch it every week. And you're saying these comments have to stop. What is wrong with having safety concerns about the riders? Nothing at all. If you're not concerned, then you have issues! Believe me, I love watching these guys ride and pushing the limits. I just don't want to see Utah shut this great event down. Because of someone getting you know what. The way America is today, you have that possibility of it happening, and I don't want that to happen because I love watching what these guys do. No, these comments don't have to stop because we have something called the 1st amendment. Explain to me why they have to stop.

How many people have died racing in the TT and that doesn’t get cancelled. The athletes want to do it and they know what they are capable of. My stomach turns watching them hit some of this stuff and quite honestly I don’t even understand how it’s possible but it will always carry on as long as they want to race it. I would rather it go back to more raw big mountain rampage. I find lines like brendogs way more exciting than the tricky lines. Still seriously impressive obviously but just my preference. Also the judges bum the shit out of the slopestyle boys.
