Hi everyone, think it's about time I make another comment. I wanted to produce the work and let people learn and grow from it so it was never my intention to be posting comments and responding to comments unless someone says something directly to me. Plus I obviously don't have all the answers. I'm only 20. I still have much to learn and experience. But anyway I decided to make this video after I graduated from high school. I had just come from a trip to Ethiopia and Ghana. As time goes on and more information becomes available, many black people, African Americans are becoming much more aware and proud of Africa and Africans and the resilience and ingeniousness of our ancestors. However, there are many black people who do not. Black people who want to disassociate with Africa and Africans...sometimes their blackness in general. On the flip side, there's many instances where Africans or West Indians will come to America and try to disassociate with African Americans, believing the problematic white media's lies and stereotypes...believing that we are the cause of our oppression. So clearly there's issues on both sides, but the point is that we need to educate ourselves. We have to stop letting people who don't even look like us tell us about ourselves and our history and our potential and the stories of black people around the globe. We have to learn for ourselves. Black people are being systematically oppressed GLOBALLY, even in majority black spaces because of the messed up government! So a lot of work needs to be done and media is a way for us to educate ourselves and unite across borders to liberate ourselves, mind, body and spirit. So those are my thoughts. That's why I made this video, to get an idea of what some black people in America thought about Africa and Africans and vice versa, to dispel stereotypes and come together. Cliché-sounding or not, it's what needs to happen. Btw I've made a documentary entitled On the Rise: Finding My Purpose. It premiered at the first annual National Black Film Festival in Houston this past April. It highlights four black parties who found something they're passionate about and made it their purpose by using it to positively impact their communities. It dispels the stereotype that young black adults are lazy and un-ambitious. It inspires and motives. And it's available to see on RU-vid!! So please watch it and comment. I'd love to know what you all think. 💜

Please don't represent our CONTINENT AS ONE COUNTRY, AFRICA IS A CONTINENT
@MsJanise2008
@MsJanise2008 7 лет назад
Juliet Katakanya She made that distinction at the beginning of the video. The statement you may have seen toward the start of the video that read Africa is one big country' was an example she used to demonstrate some of the common misconceptions African Americans have about Africa. Directly after that statement she clarified that Africa is a continent composed of multiple countries.

I can relate. I am Ghanaian and when I moved to America the amount of ignorance was choking. People thought that I lived in huts and slept with lions. People thought that I was poor and got food from ngo's like okay. I was offended and explained to them that Africa isn't like that. There are poor people but the are people who live billionaire and middle class lives. We pay everything in cash there are hardly credit cards. I wish people knew more about Africa apart from war and being exploited by colonist

@anneghata9614
@anneghata9614 4 года назад
And that’s a beautiful thing! It gives me joy when Africans are proud to be part of the whole continent. I’m very proud to say I’m African too! The risk with that, though, is that we also encourage the “Africa is a country” stereotype, and it stresses us out when they think we’re nothing but a large country filled with poor people. I do encourage you to first say you’re from Africa, but I also encourage you to include the country that you’re specifically from afterwards. We are a united people, but we do have unique identities that shouldn’t be tucked away. But please, continue being proudly African! God bless you!

I'm a black American and I identify with African culture. I wear traditional African garb and celebrate African customs. Much of our style and music as black Americans were derived from African influence. I never make the distinction between black American or any other variation of black. You are all my people. I plan to instill these ideas into my children one day because I want them to not only have an understanding of their history but a sense of self. Never be ashamed of your roots. They are beautiful so embrace them.

TRUE SPEECH. I agreed with you when you said " Never be ashamed of your roots. Julius Nyerere one time president of Tanzania once said. Do not be ashamed to be a black person.He went ahead to say," Unity will not make us rich, but it can make it difficult for Africa and the African peoples to be disregarded and humiliated. What this man meant was, without unity, there is no future for the black race.

China has flooded the Photovoltaics market with cheap PV's, Tarrifs in Europe and the US made it prohibitively expensive to sell them there. Akon got a credit line to go into certain countries within Africa and take Solar to places which literally aren't connected to the grid (and it'd likely be very expensive to do so), whilst still trying to make money from the enterprise. Personally, i think African countries should look to at minimum jack up mineral taxes, and/or look to renationalize certain mines. But unfortunately too many countries in Africa are getting ripped off by European and Asian corporations, not to mention the rampant corruption. Don't get me started on the UTTER fraud perpetrated by the French Government of "CFA Franc"...outright fraud! Anyone who wants to do some research or a glimmer of how Africa is being looted , look up "Anil Agarwal Zambia", "Benny Steinmetz Simandou", "Dan Gertler Congo".....just some examples. The South Africans are going in the right general direction on certain aspects.

I have very close friends from the Continent, and they have shared some beautiful experiences with me. I view them as my long-lost cousins, and I feel a sense of kinship with them. Lea Topcap here's how foolish you sound. DNA test can't determine much of anything when is comes to where your from. Top researcher have came forward and spilled the beans on the testing. They stated that they can only trace 0.01% of anyone's DNA back to a specific group. Meaning the test people have been taking are for entertainment purposes only. Also, Africa was never a real place. All you have to do is study old maps and hidden cultures. Its more of a description of an area meaning without cold or sunny. This planet has numerous places that fit that description. When you make claims that your African, you show a lack of knowledge and intellect which further puts you in a place of ignorance. Instead of being feed your information, try looking for yourself. A person who allows someone else to turn their stones over, misses out on the treasures that may be hidden under them. Turn you down stones.

Brian Reed I agree man. But I think initial anger is okay as long as a person doesn't stop there. I'm white, but I came to believe, based on several reasons, that the public school system is basically designed to brainwash kids into becoming government dependent statists/conformists. As long as a person turns their anger into productivity, it can be good. Fussing alone is just a slippery slope though

Re educate my life and existence perspective... To me brought up in the west, going to Africa is not a luxury, but really essential as a ( part) black person.. Black people of the western world have an emergency, if they have not been to anywhere in Africa, and spend some time there.. I have only spent 6 months there on two occasions and is not enough. How can you respect the black identity of someone when they have no inclination to want to go to a black continent, created for black people, by black people ?

Nice vlog! Thanks for sharing. I’ve lived in Uganda, Kenya, and South Africa in the span of 4yrs and still present in Africa… In my experience the majority of the African people I’ve encountered have been friendly, yet also a bit judgmental and standoffish. They stick with their own kind, which I do admire, but in a way, it could make someone feel like the “odd man out”. Also, as an indigenous American, it has been a bit difficult to thrive career-wise in Africa. However, continental Africans can go to America, go to school there, work there, etc. Yet, "AA" can't go anywhere in Africa and thrive unless they're rich... It seems like a double standard to me.

There is a difference between nationality and origin. Being born somewhere makes you a citizen of that country not a native. A white man born in an African country is not African as his culture, name, customs says otherwise. Afro-descents are different because they were forcibly brought into the Americas therefore it is difficult for them to be a native of another land as they have been here since centuries. If citizenship really grants the title of being an "American", blacks and brown skin people would not be oppress or discriminated against as no distinction would have been made.

This is a good start...a good way for both sides of the Diaspora to get a grip, and to move forward stronger together and unified. It will take time to undo the damage from European interferences of slave trade, mis-communication, colonialism, racism, religious divides, etc. We all need to broaden our minds through cultural exchange and study of current events throughout the Diaspora. Education from an Afrocentric perspective is key to de-program. The cultural divide even amongst "Blacks in America" makes this video's focus on them most needed. America and Europe have a way of sucking most of Africa out of the souls of who it deceives. Now this generation is traveling to Africa and will spread the truth with help from technology to speed up the process...hope my brothers and sister. South Carolina, USA

Young City Bandit well, africa is not any other continent. We have a sense of pride due to our history, resources and culture. Not that other continents have no pride, but its more national pride e.g. asian culture is completely different like when comparing india to china or iraq. They are completely different. But i can compare tanzania to Zimbabwe, both on far sides from eachother (east africa and south africa). although the culture is different there is a lot that can be related such as words...shona people of Zimbabwe have similar words to swahili

They have shared our culture in their arts maybe with something of Europe but massively African....it is the same in all America... They show to the world that black people can do and be the best... The only difference between us is the development level....and the propaganda by whites people who want our destruction!.... Today I will be proud to see much more afro American people of course African African also invest in Africa and being rich here... It is bad to see how white people can be rich in and by our land more than us!.... African American are for me the best in America... Liberia is the country that took in the Black Americans way back when. It was a struggle for those folks and I met a decedent of that back to Africa Movement here in Ghana recently. She was very proud to be Liberian but she also teaches at an HBCU in Texas. The thing is when she said she was Liberian I asked more about the language and she said they speak English. I then said that's right there were Black Americans that traveled there in which one became president. Once I showed interest she revealed that info to me. Its good to take time out to research because you never know and African People know all the American History all the Canadian history etc. We as Americans have to become knowledgeable on our own.

william overton behind it all is the system of white supremacy which is called apartheid in Africa. Same system, different name. It's a known fact that Europeans created ghettos and push poor people of color into them and sometimes white people too only to give one the illusion that poor white people are going through the same thing black people are going through but poor white people are just casualties of War under the system of white supremacy. I look at poor white people the same as I do rich white people. There's no difference. They both are capable of practicing white supremacy.

Great conversation to begin. I was very pleased to run across this video. Let's do better than poking fingers at each other: African Americans are not the only people who are misinformed about Africa; my fellow African colleagues do NOT know much about Africa either. They know little to NOTHING of the transatlantic slave trade. To know about your local culture is NOT the same as knowing about the continent of Africa. Africa is huge and full of rich, ancient cultures and modern people who are facing the future with confidence and pride. The comments section here lazily falls back on hackneyed stereotypes and it is counterproductive. The current generation of African Americans doesn't have the same negative views of Africa as our parents who had so little truth and information at their disposal, so let us stop playing on the tired tropes of African Americans thinking Africa and Africans only diseased, impoverished and destitute. We need to move beyond that nonsense that Europeans have perpetuated and instead work together by investing in places in Africa that are primed and ready to lead and not just follow. Africans all over the world need to pull together and work for the advancement of African people worldwide. It pains me to death as I travel from country to country to see Africans on the street and they turn their heads and look away; what's with that? It's funny, but for all the "motherland" talk we African Americans share, the only black people I end up talking to for more than a quick hello on my travels are other African Americans (AAs), although I have learned that black folks in general will quickly smile and return a hello if one is initiated by me. My fear is that the pendulum has swung to the other side and AAs have been fed this romanticized, idyllic version of Africa, which is also not true. Disease, poverty and destitution do indeed exist on the continent in vastly larger proportions than those found in North America or Europe---however, let us not be smug in announcing such. Truly, all these things can be found the world over, and there is very little good in simply mentioning them without any effort in solving the problems. Anyway, can we get a forum someplace on FB or something to facilitate a forward movement?

Exactly, I don't understand how it becomes a verbal confrontation over the internet when The bottom line is we all in the diaspora know our roots began in The Mother Land,and it is up to us to go experience the beauty, real cuture, food, music, dance for our self, and not believe what the media portrays it to be
@africandefender2967
@africandefender2967 7 лет назад
Desert Lotus You are absolutely right, one thing I know to be true is when we talk and teach positive continuously more and more of the African diaspora will do research learn what has been lost or stolen,and what's going on today and grow closers have pride etc. We don't need others to teach the African culture to Africans, when we learn from one another in and out of Africa we can pull what we have achieved every where and build on it for the mother land,cause yes all others take and take from the African diaspora still today,it makes them happy why can't we be happy.The African way without outside influence is the right way,all others have proved that,we don't have to.

Am from GHANA and me and my family are doing really good thanks to the natural resources in Africa. I see hundreds of thousands of dollars every single day and have possessions most of these Americans and African-Americans don't have. I think some African-Americans lack respect and values, some are ignorant about their roots and hence they look down upon Africans though we are all one people but separated by slave trade.

Bawa Mohammed Awal People like to portray all Americans as "well off" but dont be fooled there is millions of poor people here. You are right I have seen many Africans from different countries living better than many Americans i know. Everywhere has rich, poor and in between and the countries of Africa are no different. Anyone who believes a whole continent is poor is very uneducated. AAs have been ignorant by force for a long time but the worse thing they could have done was give us the internet. Knowledge at our fingertips and ways to speak to people we couldnt have without it. i feel we are becoming more aware and future generations will be more knowledgeable. just my opinion.

No...... white supremacists constantly show Africans living in huts made from animal dung and constantly starving to death. .. WHITE SUPREMACISTS are to blame for this, not Black Americans. When Africans come here, the only time you all fully associate with Black Americans is when you are selling us something.

The only time Africans in America try to associate with BLACK Americans is when they are trying to sell us something.

Because of White Supremacy in America, we are not taught our history.!!!!!! What are you all taught about Black Americans in Ghana?

Im planning on a trip this yr to Ghana, and in all the videos I've watched, the american ex-pats have nothing but good things to say about living there. The American ex-pats talk about the ups and downs but overall good things to say, and also mention how well they were received by the Ghanaian people. Personally i cant wait to go.

Africans still live in huts I'm like is this the 17th century?! In South Africa, people used to live in huts possibly 200 years ago and it's 2020, times have changed! South Africans and many Africans live in houses, apartments, and cities just like normal people do! Some people need to stop being so negative towards Africa because it is a beautiful continent with many countries with different cultures, languages, and people. I am honestly proud to be an African.
