The advancement of women and girls requires that their rights are protected and enshrined in national laws and implemented through well established and functional institutions.
The Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa was signed on July 1 2003 and entered into force on 25 November 2005 .
The Charter calls for the end of discriminatory and harmful practices against women and the implementation of and protection of their rights including enforcement to ensure women achieve their full potential and contribute the development of Africa.
The Charter’s articles cover amongst others - Elimination of discrimination against women; Right to Dignity; The Rights to Life, Integrity and Security of the Person; Elimination of Harmful Practices against women (e.g. FGM; Marriage & Divorce; Access to Justice and Equal Protection before the Law; Right to participation in Political, and Decision-Making Processes; Protection of Elderly women , Right to Education and other Social Welfare rights.
