Sweet! Simply Red "Holding Back The Years" topped the charts in the US in 1986. The song defined smooth for the decade that followed and more. The video remixes the singer's memories into his present moment daydream. Their debut album also featured a soulful cover of the Talking Heads song "Heaven" that still sounds really nice.
"Holding Back the Years" is about the feeling of needing to leave home and make your mark in the world, but being afraid of the outside world due to childhood trauma. The song's lyrics convey a sense of waking up and shaking off years of daily trauma, and knowing it's time to move on with your life. The song's chorus is the repeated line, "I'll keep holding on" which means he is holding on for a better future. When he packed his bags and got onto the train he was leaving his home to make his mark in the world and at the end he released some of his pent-up trauma.
I think the song is about his mum who abandoned him when he was very young and he wasted all those tears because she never came back. I don't know about the teacher. Maybe he had a crush on her 😂
❤❤❤❤ Beautifully sung. Highly triggering to someone going through a rough patch. In the end though, at least the message is to keep holding on. As to the video, it is just an amalgamation of dark images. My view is it captured a mood being created in the time it was written. 1985. Yuppies. Young, upwardly mobile. Just kids really, sold on wealth and success as a solution to all of their problems. Wasted all those years. I always figured, turn the scoreboard off and play for fun.
