I'm at a point in my life where it's no longer hard for me to say No. Even me, am proud of myself. I've realized their emergency is not my priority and I'm not responsible to solve their problems, if I have it, I'll graciously do it. I confidently tell them I have debts I'm paying off and my resources can't accomodate their request at the moment. Each time I do it, I pat myself on the back. #Shalom
Black tax is not just about diaspora... Its actually any1 working and has to support his/her family when they work. It was coined in SA where parents would position themselves for kids to work and do things for them
You are looking splendid! (Love the top). Thank you for talking about this, I saw my parents go through the demands of Black Tax growing up when Western Union (with its hefty transfer fees) pretty much held the monopoly over international remittances. I have seen that it never ends. I have obligations but have learnt to say no and make myself unavailable to people who might have expectations that I am not in a position to meet. It’s a real challenge for almost all of the African diaspora. Remittances remain the most effective form of financial support across the continent. The numbers exceed so-called development aid as well. While I am all for remittances and have seen how many lives, families etc back home have benefitted and continue to benefit from them, I must say Black tax is so very costly in so many ways.
The content of this video is so on point. As a 1st born, a lot is expected of me, but I've explained to them my situation, emergency only. These are real issues and it's commendable that you are using your channel to bring such awareness.
This statement "the likelyhood one will be broke in canada than in Nigeria" Please can you throw more light. If possible can you make a video on this. Thank you so so much for always delivering valuable content. God bless you❤❤❤
I spoke a little more about it in the video. There is some leverage in Nigeria that is not available in Canada. There are options of not paying rent on time, boycotting utilities and depending on people to get by in Nigeria that is almost impossible in Canada. In Nigeria, you can start a business from the trunk of your car or the side of the road, cant happen like that in Canada. I may just make a video about it. Thanks a lot
Thank you for this video. I wish everyone back home could watch this. The expectations don't align with the reality of most people here. Most people just assume you MUST be able to afford to send large amounts..some will even make calculations for you based on the exchange rates. Forgetting that we spend dollars here and not Naira. Like you suggested, I let my family members know the true situation of things. I don't do too much explanations with outsiders. Everyone will be alright. Lol
Thank you for this video, great as usual.Marina i appreciate your consistency through the years with your videos. Frank, down to earth and informative. Keep it up. On the topic i do not do more than the ability God has given me. I never borrow to fund transfers back home.
I appreciate that! I am happy for you. Some people are so backed into a corner that they get into debt to fund lifestyles back home, which is sad really
That emotional blackmail part. I zone out when that starts. How can you have run out of goodwill with all your friends and family that me who is a total stranger on the internet is your last hope? My own charity list is long please.
Where is the lie ? I can totally relate to all you have said. The moment you travel abroad you become a means to an end to some. It’s always their audacity for me 😂. Anyways “GIVE BUT DONT LET IT EMPTY YOU”.
On this side of my planet, Na peace o! 🤣🤣🤣. I do only what I can afford, I don’t entertain”emergency” bullying 🤣, I don’t project an image that am not , and don’t put myself under pressure. Like you said , if you die, they will migrate. Thank you much
We Haitians face the same dilemma with our people back home, and many who come here finally realize the harsh reality we have been living in the western world.
This content is giving. The mentality of 90% of Nigerians is those abroad are very rich so it is their responsibility to take care of them and children. Currently am on the hot sit, just because my husband resides in the UK automatically became a witch. I hear dont mind the wife she is behind his actions not wanting to help us. Someone even called me once to give her the private number i use in speaking to my husband. Can you imagine?
I referenced people in that specific situation in the video but you and I know that is not everyone's reality. The suffering is everywhere so we can all manage our expectations
