I have 2 of these guys in a 70 gallon planted tank. They are fully grown and I have had them 5 or 6 years. I have also had to buy them from petsmart. The fishes temperament is very shy ,but also very personable. The only other tank mates i have with them are siamese algae eaters that are about 3 inches long. The leaf fish do leave them alone for the most part but i had to put them in the tank at that size or they will get ate.I find that a naturalistic setup is most preferred for these fish with lots of caves.( one for each fish) they will also hide themselves in the live plants to sleep.( sometimes on their sides) I have gotten them to take dried river shrimp and dried mealworms (that they like the best) On occasion I feed them guppies. It is interesting to watch them hunt as i have observed them acting as dead leaves when they hunt. hope that helps
I had two of these that I bought together. One bullied the other, relentlessly! I was in the process of setting up a second tank, so i could separate them, when, the bully died. The one that was left, "Gonzo", is as you described... very shy, yet, personable. However, his favorite food is Sinking Algae Wafers. I buy baby guppies and carnivore foods, but, he will beg for the wafers. He is one of the coolest fresh water fish we've ever had! He knows where I keep the algae wafers, and, when he sees me pick the packet up, he gets excited. It's the craziest thing! He's about 5.5 inches long and I've had him for about eight years.
I’ve had my guy, Sake, for about 5 years now & let me tell you he’s huge. He’s also very aggressive & in fact will try to eat anything that can fit into his mouth, but he’s never messed with my cory cats. I’ve noticed over the years & from learning that they need a large cave, are territorial, loves lots of plants, are straight carnivores & dislikes bright light!
I’ve only ever seen them at petsmart. I bought mine there and they are awesome fish . I named themGeorge and Laura bush fish, very personal and so cool to watch hunt.
Back when I had tanks I had 2 and they both grew to around 8 inches. They were massive. Also surprisingly good tank mates for being a predator. They are pretty shy and love a dense tank, but so cool to watch hunt. Pure ambush fish.
I absolutely love these guys and they grow fairly fats mine lived for about 6 years and got 6inches long. Mine actually hung out with my gourami that I got at about the same time/size and they were best buddies. They would take turn on the bloodworm cubes.
I've got 2 of these. Both were about the size of platies when I brought them home. I've had them less than a year and one is already about 6 inches long. They are in a community tank with carnivores/ omnivores. I have had no aggression issues.
I have mine in with an electric blue acara, some silvery tetra things- about 3x the size of a neon. A guppy, glass cats and some pictus cats. They have been in together for about a year now. I had basically a guppy tank before and unfortunately as he grew he ate almost all of the little fish but the remaining ones are wise to him and the tank seems to be very balanced. Feed blood worms and api brand pellets and flakes. He eats all of it!
I got one as a baby had him for two years his name is toby I love him and he has be a awesome fish to keep very Hardy greets me everyday when I get home from work
I have one for 3 years and he is fully grown now. it is about 6 inches long. it seems like you really love this fish, so if you live in Los Angeles, i can give it to you.
The 1 fish is disfigured probably from bolting in the tank , it will slowly starve . Happened to mine and yes there fine with Oscars had two 13" Oscars in with mine
I've had them and they were very easy to care for none ever died BUT I didnt know how big they got I was told they stay small (I was young) and it's TRUE when they get big enough they will eat everything they can fit in their mouths...but I think they're beautiful I just didnt have the money for a huge tank for five of them!
Sorry, my question isn’t about this video, but I couldn’t find a General Question area. Anyway, after looking at your fish room I’d like to ask what or how you constructed your aquarium racks? Some look to be metal and other wood. Are they custom or store bought? And, how did you get such a consistent look to the whole room?
Me and my girlfriend were just looking at one of these and petsmart employees had no idea what these fish were like so thanks almost put one in community tank now gonna wait till my predator tank is done
Heu man need your help so I bought one at my lfs and he was super healthy at the store I temp acclamated him like i do all my fish I did this for about 30-40 mins and when I added him he was flopping around like he had a swim bladder issue and now he's sitting at the bottom huffing and puffing idk what went wrong and now my tears in there have died
Loved the video! I just got one of theses little guys as a gift and I wonder if I could put him with a Betta... I worry about food (my Betta eats a lot faster than he does) and space (the betta tank is 3 gallons). Could you help me with that?Thank you!
Dude I was given a couple of African leaf fish and I put some bettas with them and overnight they disappeared one by one. I was wondering why the one survivor kept hiding until I discovered other fish missing their heads. Now I know these fish will literally chomp on anything
BTW petsmart advertises them as and intermediate experience COMMUNITY fish. So if they are true Predators there are going to be a lot of upset fish owners
