After Life Season 3 Ending Explained, Ricky Gervais's tale of grief and moving on has come to its suitably heartwarming and heartbreaking conclusion with After Life season three. Tony has been struggling for a while now, and though we see his efforts to move forward being knocked back once or twice, his friends are always on standby to help him out. So how did his story end? In typical Gervais style, it happens in a far-from-simple way. But thankfully, in an exclusive chat with Digital Spy, the cast were on hand to give their verdict on Tony's future.

I cried my heart out. In the last scene, first, his aging dog disappears then it's him walking alone and he disappears. Maybe I'm just morbid but I read into it as the dog died first, after all, she was getting old, and then sometime later after being alone in life for a while, he died. Either way, amazing series... but it did break my heart. So well done. I'd expect nothing less from someone as genius as Gervais.

That's what it seemed he meant. The trees were green, then Fall, dog lived for a while longer, loved how they "greyed" him for realism. He died last, but was an "angel" until then.

I took it the same way. The slow walk away represented his life over the years - his wife faded first, then Brandy (they had her looking gray and grizzled in the last episode), and eventually Tony. Not sure I've ever been impacted like this by a TV show before. Amazing writing and acting, and each character was totally believable.

I did not get the impression he took his life. The dog aged, the trees changed, so time passed. I think, he walked thru his natural lifespan, accompanied by the loves of his life till they passed, then it was his turn. Beautifully done.

I've been suicidal for 20 years. I have never seen a more accurate depiction of what it is like to be suicidal. The part where he says, he still wants to die every day even though he won't do the deed. The part where says he gets irritated at people saying he has to keep going. Yup and Yup. The part in the yoga studio, when the poor lady says she is lonely, and they tell her to get lost. So accurate to how real people act. Wonderful show.

I just binge watched Afterlife season 3 with my husband. We both realized just how lucky we are. We are soulmates, we love the same music, we love to travel, we love to try anything new. And we both realize just how lost we would be without the other. While I'm sad the show won't continue, I realize why it can't go on. Once he has the Apiphany of why he can't go on being sad, and mean and angry, he's where his deceased wife wanted him to be. He's in a place where making other people happy is the most important thing and if he doesn't find another special person to help him carry on with his life, that's okay. He knows what he's supposed to do, he has purpose in his life. It always makes me sad to think that there are people who don't believe there's something after this. After losing my entire family in the last five years, I have to believe there's something more to look forward to.

The end scene where he is walking away; I felt this was showing us that within the year he would lose his dog and then he would pass away too. The trees start off with green leaves as it appears to be Spring or Summer time when the fair is on, then the leaves go brown at the end and fall as if to tell us it was Autumn when he passes away.

Brilliant show, loved all 3 seasons, and the ending. There are mixed views around the ending and if Tony committed suicide etc. My interpretation is Tony lived on longer after the end scene, for how long we never know but from the changing seasons and fading out I believe Brandy died maybe not too long after of old age, as we saw she naturally aged during the course of the show. Tony then fading out later along with autumn colours suggests he lived on longer before again naturally dying at some point. Remember the scene on the bench between Paul and Anne, when they both quote Robert Frost with 'life goes on' The fading out end scene with each character fading at different times feels very much like it's saying life goes on. He probably never got over Lisa but come to terms with grief of sorts and realising that 'life goes on' He wanted to be kinder in life and did so in many ways to his various friends and people he met. Visiting the children's hospice gave him purpose and I am sure Tony would have kept to his word to visit everyday. Interpreting the part where Lenny looks at the photo oddly he took of Tony at the end. I like to think it was perhaps somehow slightly distorted with maybe angel wings of sorts in the picture he saw on the camera. Like from the conversation Anne had with Tony about the work of angels in real life form. Rather than it being a blank picture without Tony in it to suggest suicide etc. Personally just my own thoughts. Either way, a great show, acting, thought provoking, comedy gold and sadness rolled into one, great support characters/cast as with all Ricky Gervais shows.

@Jitsuman

That’s how I interpreted it too, except for the photo. Normally in every episode after the two listen to a locals story for the paper Tony would unenthusiastically tell Lenny to “take the photo”. However here Lenny did this on his own and it was of Tony at the end of the final episode indicating that Tony’s story was told. I figured that he looked at the picture funny to give emphasis on this weird feeling of how the tables have been turned.

Everyone is talking about suicide. But I like to think that he fades away because his work as an angel is done. First there is Lisa and the dog (also angels) who encourages him to go on and do his good work. So they fade away first. And when he looks at the fair he knows his work is done. Everyone he 'touched' is happy, so he can now 'fade away' to because he finally found and fulfilled his purpose. I know it's corny, but I like that explanation better.

Gervais explicitly said he ruled out suicide after he got feedback from psychiatrists saying DON'T let Tony kill himself because a lot of their patients watched and enjoyed the series. You could make the argument that he wanted that ending but then changed it to be ambiguous, and that was his version of ruling it out. But it doesn't feel like a very Gervais move.

I was hoping for Tony to get together with Emma. But knowing Ricky I was quite certain he wasn’t going to opt for the typical Hollywood ending. I really liked the ending. He liked Emma a lot, but it wouldn’t be fair if he kept her on the hook forever. There is a lot of love in letting go as well. And Lisa was his one and only true love, some people just don’t want to find someone else after a loss, which is totally fine. The fact that his dog died first, and that Tony walked on a bit by himself made me realize he didn’t kill himself, not even when his dog died. He went on to do good. He see him frequently going to the children’s hospital, helping his friends and loved ones. And enjoying his talks with Anne. This story about loss hit me harder than I could ever have imagined. Having lost literally everyone I have ever cared for, including my two kids. Who haven’t died but who have been cunningly taken from me. I never felt so many similarities as to Tony. I just watched the entire 3 seasons in one sitting again.

Afterlife. I happen to believe that this is the true Ricky Gervais masterpiece. Everything about this series is truly brilliant. The assembled characters, the clips of Lisa and the struggle with grief and acceptance. To be able to mix comedy with such deep subject matter is something only a gifted writer could do. The show has ended on a very meaningful tone but I’ll definitely miss it. There are many beautiful moments but in series 2 episode 2? When he sees Lisa, having lost he hair, and tells he she “never looked as beautiful “ I thought that was brilliant and set the standard for how afterlife can go places most comedy shows can’t. Maybe I’m wrong calling this a comedy but there was many things that caused uncontrollable laughter. It’s been great watching and although the end has come I will always consider this to be a timeless and beautiful series

I absolutely love this show. It brings out a lot of emotions and I wish there was more. But thankfully he was wise to keep it short and the ending was perfect. Highly recommend you watch it.

I suppose I'm echoing what some have said here already, but at first the scene of Tony walking with the apparition of Lisa is meant to spark the idea that he killed himself. But then it morphs.. the colors of the trees change and his dog disappears, indicating that he lived on through the "autumn of life". Brilliant in that they kind of get both, the feeling that he killed himself, but also that he didn't. Nice work Ricky! We had to put our kitty Winx down last Sat (liver/kidney disease), so needless to say.. eh hem, yea ❤

Maybe I've got a bleak outlook on it. But the way Tony seems to be so content with all his friends happy seemed to me like it is a final stand often (and in my own experience with those who have) . It doesn't seem to be that life goes on and eventually we all pass, but in that last moment that look of concern in lenny's face is like a realisation that Tony has gone to commit suicide and seeing Tony with Lisa in that end scene makes me feel like he did...

I see the ending as a way of saying that Tony is indeed an angel but, as explained by his grave-side companion, one that is alive. Hence the final scene is the only non-literal moment of the whole show. It represents what we all know what angels do at the end of a film (they move on and go back to heaven) but this time it is telling us that Tony moves on to his heaven; that is just a happier life.

The scene where the kid asks him if he believes in heaven, I felt it was sort of meta, I thought it was touching to see Ricky basically saying hes an atheist but hes not a psychopath who would just lash out on a dying kid I dont believe in god either, so I connected with that, the lesson there being: we should all be kind to eachother first of all, no matter what Id say I liked the show in general, comedy didnt always hit for me, same with some characters But the last episode was sooo good, beautifully done

Maybe shocked he was so happy and smiling. Ricky in "Lorraine" interview I think said he was surprised how some saw it. Why would he want to die, he found the peace he wanted here. He would want to honor Lisa's memory being an angel on earth.

more than tony and his dog, the way the other characters found something in the end is what surprises me. the ending was ok for me. but the way he wrote the other peoples stories thats what i find truly uplifting because in the end its like everyone has a reason to be alive. hois was obviously to find that caring is a superpower and it made hi happy making others happy which he did not realise.

my interpretation of the end scene (amateur writer here) is a metaphysical one. The field he is walking through is a green pasture that is his life, eventually his dog passes over followed by himself and in the final moments of his his life in this world his wife is there by his side. Holding his handing as he is ushered into the next world.

The bittersweet possibility of loved ones reconnecting in the afterlife is so promising. (How did Gervais say farewell to that wonderful dog when filming ended??).
