First I assess three influential readings of Postmodernism-those of Jean-François Lyotard, David Harvey, and Fredric Jameson-for a fuller understanding of the paradigm that has passed. From there, I look at the important critiques that were emerging in the 90s and 00s. This includes David Foster Wallace's famous essay "E Unibus Pluram" as well as Linda Hutcheon's conclusion to The Politics of Postmodernism to find a new label for post-Postmodernism. Three proposals-remodernism, performatism, and metamodernism-will occupy us going forward.

Brilliant, and deserving of so much more attention. On some level, I've sensed the same shifts you talk about for a while now. I'm excited for more from you.

Holy cow this is really fantastic work. You’re clear, engaging, and the presentation includes all the important bits. I wish my old philosophy professor could’ve taken a few pointers.

Finally! Someone gives Harvey's book the attention it deserves. I think his idea of time-space compression (driven by technological development) as one of the factors that accelerate social change, is not very often discussed.

Honestly, taken together, the metanarrative, an eternal and immutable myth of purpose, and a deeper meaning to life all seem to be seizing at the same thing in the end: a "why" to our lives that is not merely the surface experience of experiencing moments and surviving one day to reach the next day. All told, postmodernism means the death of philosophical thought. Edit: Hey, I watched your next video and I was right!

This is great stuff Brendan... Subscribed! I think you're in a good direction to be looking past PM, although, I'm not sure there could be a Post-PM, in the sense that it is so pluralistic. It feels like PM will give way to more of something like a singularity, which is why it looks like something new and old, exciting and mundane, at the same time. Right now, the bottleneck is in human consciousness and information processing, but when we actually start to LIVE multiple identities, process and speak 40 thoughts at once in multiple virtual universes, it's going to be postmodernism in a voluntary matrix-like reality machine, that may or may not function for free depending on the day lol...

I don't know how I stumbled upon your channel, but this is awesome stuff. Thanks for making this content. BTW, did you ever happen to read Houellebecq? I think he's quite an interesting literary figure in the conservative, reactionary, anti-postmodernism realm.

Thanks very much. Glad you found your way here! No, I'm not familiar with Houellebecq. How'd you get interested in anti-/post-postmodernism?

@@BrendanGrahamDempsey You should definitely give Houellebecq a go. His The Possibility of an Island is still my favorite novel of his. It's hard to tell what got me into feeling an internal push back against postmodernism. Maybe Jordan Peterson first making that connection for me, between "SJW types", nihilism, and postmodernism.

that stephen hicks' book unfortunately lacks any meaningful substance, for example kant is called a "counter-enlightenment philosopher", refer to the video cck philosophy made about it in general, it seems to me that conservatives misunderstand postmodernism on purpose and are proud of it, so far i've yet to encounter any conservative criticism of postmodern philosophy that has any substance to it. jordan peterson's "postmodern neomarxism" is such a colossal misnomer that it illustrates how he doesn't understand marxism, neomarxism (which is an actual thing, just not what peterson thinks it is) or postmodernism. žižek already butchered peterson on this topic and anyone who still thinks peterson had a point there is just proud of not trying to understand.

Grew up in the Modern world, lived and suffered through the Postmodern world and now here we are right where I have always been philosophically and spiritually fighting for since I came of age in the 1970s... back to values -truth, trust, tradition (perhaps enhanced by those times as well as ancient pasts), spirituality, and the Real world. Thank God Postmodern ism is DEAD. though I always like Lyotard and have read and re-read The Post Modern Condition several times over the years. Hooray Postmodernism is finally DEAD. hahahaha. It has been the most miserable of times (though there is still a lot of misery out there created by it and its' hateful arrogance. (derrida and foucault -puke) as far as spirituality goes for the metamodern... I suggest that one doesnt need to reinvent "religion" ... just read the upanishads and apply them to your individual life. the Santanan Dharma has since time immemorial been the standard for the necessary adjustments to the progression of time and cultures. imo.
