You know, it’s not just the arrogance of Delphine that ticks me off, but the hypocrisy. She talks about the Greybeards limiting the Dragonborn’s potential, yet all she does is order us around and try to have us do her dirty work. The Greybeards encourage you to meditate and reflect on what YOU think it means to be Dragonborn, while she’s just like “Don’t think, KILL!”.

Some of the best charcters in gaming are hyper violent and sre loved because of why. Delphine violence is based on stupidity and hypocrisy.
Bethesda doesn't know how to write "hard, meaningful choices" - Fallout 4 is a perfect example of that. "You must save the son you have only known for 2 minutes and have formed literally zero attachment to!" Or not, I don't care about that kid. Especially considering under the circumstances there is no way I am not a Synth and thus he's not really my son anyway.

What plot of Fallout 4 I would make here on the spot in the comments if I was a writer/developer. Let's see... The raiders who kidnapped Shaun would actually be regular raiders, well organized and numerous. They would take him, because he is not affected by radiation and they want to find a cure, but they lack technology and scientists to do so, so they kidnap some smart scientists and tell them to make a lab. The lab slowly grows into the institute. They will create many things including the synths. But after a few years, Shaun, now a young scientist using advanced technology finds many pre war places of interests, including the vault where he came from. He finds his father in there, but decides to keep him frozen, until he finds a safe way to get him out without alerting the raiders, but he understands that he can just wait and he will leave on his own. Not knowing they killed his mom. But then he will find out because of the security cameras and starts plotting in secret, to create the army of synths and wipe the raiders off the face of the Earth. Planning to be there on the day when his father wakes up to be a family again, preferably after all the raiders are dead, so they can live in peace. But he is forced to miss this moment when it comes. On the surface though, Shaun still pretends he is working with the raiders for now. Meanwhile the Minutemen are trying to protect the Commonwealth from mutants, feral ghouls, deathclaws, raiders and other menaces. The Mechanist, who loves to create robots, finds out and helps them with their defenses, indirectly. (Sending robots that protect them from time to time, then leave.) Being a mysterious person. But some of the raiders are dealing with a corrupt Brotherhood elder. The Brotherhood doesn't know one of their Elders is dealing with the enemies, but Shaun finds out and replaces him with a synth, so he can have a spy in the Brotherhood. The original elder's bodyguard is killed during a fight though. This raises a suspicion within the Brotherhood. Meanwhile Shaun separated The Institute from the raiders and begins a full scale attack against the raiders using synths and robots. While these two factions are at war, the Brotherhood recognizes a synth that died in the battle against the raiders as the murderer of Elder's bodyguard and then find out the Elder is a synth as well. Now the Brotherhood battle both the Institute for revenge and the Raiders because they are scum. Meanwhile The Minutemen think the Institute is still with the Raiders, as they've battled them before, they too have their own agenda to battle both groups, but the Mechanist stopped sending helpful robots all of a sudden and nobody knows why. (Another side quest) But the Minutemen are basically trying to protect common folk from harm, but now they need your help more than ever, now that the Mechanist stopped the support. The Brotherhood is self centered and battling raiders and Institute to protect their own group and they are paranoid that there may be stronger opponents than them, probably overestimating the Institute, but who knows. Join them to find out. The Institute fights Raiders, because Shaun wants revenge for his mom and incidentally ignited the wrath of other groups using his shady tactics. There are many enemies, so if you want to join them and your son, count on many battles. Raiders battle all other groups, because they are scum. Plot twist: The Mechanist started supporting the Raiders with advanced robots, that is why they are tough to kill now. Why though? That is up to investigation. So if you want to play a villain, join them and find out. (I don't have the endings and plot twists thought out for each faction yet, but I could do it.) Tldr: Some alternate plot made up in my head as a setting to Fallout 4 when the player finally wakes up and sees the Wasteland factions battling each other.
The Dragonborn also seems to forget that he can refuse to work with them. Sure, it's like saying you quit when you're getting fired, but it's the authority that matters in that situation.

She's on the elf list. And yet Ulfric isn't, despite being a legend during that war. She must've done a while lotta bad things. And for what? The possibility that the elves might want the Dragonborn, someone who would nothing more than a myth even the long lived elves don't remember? Who holds nothing of importance for them?

However imo he has more than redeemed himself by teaching mortals the Thu'um and aiding them against Alduin in the Dragon War. The key difference is that Paathurnax IS actually your superior, being the abbot, so to speak, of the Greybeards and you, as powerful of a Dragonborn you are, are not above him. Besides, he talks to you like a peer, someone on the same level, AND is the living proof that through meditation and great will one can if not change their nature, at least channel it for the greater good (a dragon's name in Skyrim represents their nature and Paathurnax means something along the lines of CRUEL TYRANT, but he has worked ages to not be a cruel tyrant). Delphine, on the other hand, is a hypocrite and coward who hid in a village living a simple tavern life, while the other Blades died fighting or hid in sewers overrun by thugs and thieves, and she is supposed to serve either us (as we are the Dragonborn) or Titus (as he is the Emperor). Not only she does neither, she acts like she is the one in charge AND even has the balls to say the Blades are proud dragon hunters and then never gets close to a single dragon, even asking us to kill the one dragon who proves her wrong. There's a reason why in my first playthrough I left her and Esbern as the last NPCs to kill after a simple console command, before retiring with my wife as the richest and most powerful person in Skyrim

@@Ledecral Fawkes refusing is part of why I put the thing in and self-sacrificed pre-Broken Steel. The other reason is that the transition for the narrator praising your sacrifice, to lambasting you for murdering everyone is so jarring that it's comical. "He was a martyr and a hero who loved all, he was a villain so evil he was Hitler times a million." is what it feels like.
Gotta say I’ve literally never sided with Delphine on this one, even for curiosities sake. Paarthurnax and the Grey Beards have been bros, Delphine and the Blades only ever want to talk to me about their problems. Frankly as soon as I’ve looted that fancy electric Katana that tends to be the last I see of them.
I had to spend hours troubleshooting during my first playthrough because Esbern wouldn't say his fucking dialogue during the peace talks sequence, meaning I had to sit there at the Grey Beards table just trying to magic man my way around the console while this useless hobo looked at me with his smug baldness from the other end of the room, quietly mocking me in front of the entire peace council, that witch Elenwen included Screw these guys. If it wasn't for the essential labels they'd be the firsts in line to feed the Ebony blade and Boethiah's Shrine
You can go to paarthurnaax and the Grey wards and they give you the brilliant idea of lying to her if I remember correctly. It may have been a mod but I think it was vanilla.

@@OfficialNazeemProblem is The Blades inserted themselves in first place. Without Delphine inserting into the story, we still would be able to fulfill our destiny easily. Blades only made Dragonborn run around, do their errands and discover things which already Paarthurnax and Greybeards knew.
From experience, killing Delphine over and over again gives a boatload of exp from whatever weapon category you may be using at the time. I reached legendary on most of the combat skills pretty quickly from just “killing” her in anger for a few hours. Delphine is unkillable, and unkillable npcs are exp grinders.
Yeah I usually to go to mages guild to sneak kill one of the essential npcs over and over, they just wake up and go back to bed and you can do it again. It’s a surprisingly fast grind to 100 sneak

The Thieves guild trust you and only you. In fact, the Dark Brotherhood make sure the listener gets what you need. And of course, the Riekling tribe you can become chief of in the DLC that has Solsthiem. I think that’s how it’s spelt.
I'm seriously hoping that in ES6 there will be a book you can find detailing the blades after the events of Skyrim and in it it says that the cannon ending to their story was that Delphine and Esburn were executed by fellow blade members for making the Dragonborn leave the blades and dooming the organization from ever resurging
I like how Delphine decided to give you this ultimatum / sharing she knows about Paarthurnax AFTER the Dragonborn used their sacred blood to get into their old digs And I have had Delphine tell me she knows about Paarthurnax right after getting into Sky Haven Temple. She straight up says that Paarthurnax was helpful, but now that they don’t need him anymore, he needs to die. Almost as if that, now that the Dragonborn has served their purpose, it’s time to test them. Honestly, the Paarthurnax Dilemma mods where you can put the Blades in their place feels like it should’ve been in the game from the start.

Delphine immediately getting Shouted off the mountain is my go to when she pulls that. Parthunaxx is the only reason Alduin was stopped. Yet her level of arrogance in still considering him an enemy is just brain dead stupid.
I always imagined that my dragonborn peacefully left Delphine but closed the doors on the way out, considering that the dragonborn is the only key, they would slowly rot in the temple they usurped.

I love that logic Delphine uses. “You aren’t welcome here!” Last time I checked the only reason we got in here is because of me. They have the audacity to direct the Dragonborn around when their entire existence is to serve them.
Really, it comes down to a choice between loyalty to the Greybeards or the Blades. Which isnt really much of a choice. The Greybeards can send you to just about every shout in the game which ultimately leads you to the Dragon priest masks and the ultimate dragon priest mask. In the end the greybeards can easily lead you to mastery of the voice and more powerful overall. The blades are only fun to rp with but are essentially useless.
There is a third option with mods being the fuck your faction faction, so clearly if you’re going to play the entire Skyrim game on PC then obviously choosing the fuck your faction faction is the best choice.
That’s why I’m so glad there’s a mod that lets you put her in her place. It lets you pretty much tell her “You serve me. I don’t serve you. You will respect my decision about Parthurnax or I will destroy you instead. You’ve seen my powers. You really wanna try me?”

The paarthunax dilemma makes no sense whatsoever. Paarthunax was pardoned by the ancient tongues. You know, the ones who actually suffered from his and Alduin’s crimes? So why does he have to face punishment now, after hundreds of years of solitude? He’s not responsible for any of the present dragon attacks and even helps you defeat alduin (more than the blades do, ironically) and he all ready received forgiveness from the ancient nords. Delphine is so horribly written throughout the entire main quest tbh, Bethesda just decided to not even try.

this. i love that even people who don't bat an eye at bludgeoning tyranus to death or betraying their closest friends and lovers to mephala and/or boethiah draw the line at killing paarthurnax. it's the one thing every skyrim player can agree on: we all love our big teddy bear partysnaks.
i use the mod to solves this but i also think we should have an option to kill Delphine for disobeying your word, like banishing is not even enough because she was always annoying and cocky.
@@ananousous Reminds me of the mage playthrough I did where I married Brelyna (dark elf mage student): I ended up sealing the racist jerks in Windhelm into soul gems (I think I needed to tag one of them as unessential to do it) and putting them in a display in my Windhelm house. The best part: I managed to soul trap them and let my follower finish them off, so my fine was tiny.

That would be great, but do you truly think the Thalmor would ever honor any sort of deal of that nature? When they would gain everything and lose nothing by agreeing to the deal, being led to the Blades, and then double crossing you?

I just console command kill Delphine and Esbern. Yeah it’s a bit of a tedious task. But essentially writing them out of the world Elder Scroll style is satisfying.

The Dragonborn, with Paarth, the dragons, the companions, the various guilds, the lordship of multiple provinces and the power and legitimacy of the Dragonborn vs Esbern and Delphine, both who are terrible at fighting.

A lot of Dragonborns turn out evil, but so very few decide to actually kill the only dragon that's ever been truly nice to them. The very same dragon that gave humans an edge over the ruling dragons, to begin with.
I love how Bethesda writes some characters as if the character knows they are in a video game, are immortal and thus can say anything they like without fear of getting put in the ground like a normal person would be if they talked like these characters do or had their absolute gall and arrogance. If Delphine didn't know she was an "essential" character, she wouldn't use the tone she does and she'd pick her words a little more carefully because she knows she'd go flying off the mountain and there is nothing she could do to stop it from happening.
Delphine probably doesn't assume that the heroic dragonborn is going to literally just murder her over a difference of opinion. Precicely because she *doesn't* know she's in a video game where the avatar she's speaking to is controlled by someone who is totally disconnected from her reality in a way that makes them highly likely to do psychotic shit for no reason.

I've killed him once, once. In the very beginning, Never again. Why would I kill the one chill dragon in the game? The "rewards" of doing so aren't even worth it. Kill the coolest character in the game for a decrepit base, and a task to go recruit people to join the club? No thank you.
Paarthurnax is essentially Skyrim’s Urdnot Wrex: you CAN kill him, but you’ll feel terrible for doing so, and you should, because you’re a terrible person if you go down that path
I can think of multiple ways to resolve this WITHOUT killing Paarthurnax. 1. Just walk away. Say: “Okay, you won’t help unless Paarthurnax is dead? Fine. You’ve barely helped so far, I think I’ll be just fine without you.” The Blades are left with two choices: swallow their pride and relent or lose their “champion”/errand boy the Dragonborn. 2. Ask for testimony regarding Paarthurnax’s change to good. Aside from the Greybeards, there must be some others who’d defend the noble dragon. The ancient heroes whom Paarthurnax originally taught the Dragonrend shout and whom he referred to as his FRIENDS in Sovngarde come to mind. 3. Point out that Paarthurnax is pretty much THE best dragon to try and reform the others or just keep them in line, and killing him would likely stir up MORE violence. “Is your necessary retribution worth potentially condemning countless innocents, eh Esbern?” 4. Shout them down, like in the Mod. 5. Straight up kill ‘em. Not so high and mighty now, eh Delphine? I’m actually not pleased with the idea of brutal murder, but I do feel she could do with a good punch or two.

I want to create a story involving not one but TEN Dragonborn, each with their own backgrounds and motivations. Three would be heroic, compassionate, and immensely brave, the embodiment of heroism. Four would be…morally complex, for lack of a better term. The last three are outright villains who use their incredible abilities for destructive purposes.
I like to think this happened. Delphine tells the Dragonborn to leave to which his does but before leaving he says to her “don’t come crying to me when your world falls apart Delphine” being a complete Karen that Delphine is she just smugly waves off the Dragonborn like he doesn’t exist. “We don’t need you we can recruit anyone with all these guilds in Skyrim” Five months later and Delphine is left in the grand hall room munching on bread while Esbern is trying to reason with her to reconsider to call the Dragonborn back but she refuses to listen. At first Esbern agreed with Delphine about killing the dragon but after a five months of no new recruits joining the Blades it got to the point where Esbern got suspicious and sought out why no one was joining up. Turns out all the guilds in Skyrim refused to help the Blades under the strict orders of the Dragonborn due to him being the leaders of all the guilds. The Dark Brotherhood, The Thieves Guild, Bard’s College, College of Winterholm, The Companions and The Imperial Legion or Stormcloaks refused to help support the Blades due to the Dragonborn having a higher position in these guilds. However despite informing Delphine she still refuses to listen. After 40 years Delphine is still at the temple still saying “the Dragonborn will see it my way” she has become a disfigured creature with most of her armour rusted away while talking to a disembodied skull that is now Esbern for he had died by via suicide. Delphine has gone mad even more than Cicero. She now is dubbed as the crazy lady that lives in a temple talking to a Skull. The local children of Markath dub her the Crazy Skull Lady. As for the Dragonborn, he hasn’t aged at all and is still as young as ever due to him being a vampire. As he sits upon the throne looking over Skyrim as he became the High King of Skyrim. (With the help of the Become High King Mod) Out of the blue Delphine was caught by the guards as she was trying to kidnap a chicken to join the Blades. She was brought to the high court where she was brought to the Dragonborn High King to face justice. She pleaded forgiveness and said her life has gone to shit but the Dragonborn said “remember when I said, don’t come crying to me when your world falls apart? This is what I meant” to which the Dragonborn used the same hand gesture she once used on him “take her to the dungeon and inform the Thalmor we have captured the last Blades member” Delphine was kicking and screaming when she was dragged out by the guards all the while shouting “You’re going to regret this you need Me! You Need Meeeees!!!!!!” The following day the Dragonborn received a letter from the Thalmor thanking him for letting them have Delphine and informing the Dragonborn that she had her execution yesterday, and they asked if the Dragonborn wants to keep the head. To which he wrote back to them “no need just toss it in the garbage where it belongs”
Paarthurnax is my favorite character in Skyrim. "No day goes by where I am not tempted to return to my inborn nature. Honor is fighting the lure of power.."
I hated Delphine the moment she forced me to go to some village in the boons to slay a dragon instead of just shouting at her, because she couldn’t take my word for it. Since I couldn’t ride Paarthurnax over their temple and incinerate the hell out of them, I just stole their sword and armor set like the true thief I was to display in my home, and left them hanging and didn’t dignify them with an answer, let them figure it out, I like to imagine Delphine and Esbern are the only “blades” left, and are as stupidly misguided as Dark Brotherhood was with Astrid in charge ignoring the tenets and the Night Mother.
I also stole all the stuff, and never went back. I then sold the sword and bought it back so the Stolen tag would be removed. I never did the Blades questline, so it's only Esbern and Delphine wasting away on their own.

the part thats even funnier is the only things you get from them that matter is the shout that you will use once and never touch again. the rest is sutff you loot from sky haven temple. they provide no other reason for existing. parthanax could easily give you a name of a dragon or hell fly you to skaldoven himself. or use the undead dragon from the dawnguard dlc. bend will shout also exists.
@@jdogzerosilverblade299 if you finish the war before doing the main quest, since there's no peace council you have the choice of actually getting ohdaving's name from paarthurnax himself. So yeah, not even that
She is dumb enough to challenge a guy who can literally kill gods with his words. That phrase is a direct threat as she said she would kill her enemies. Somehow she thinks she is stronger than the dude in a fully enchanted set that has killed a god.
Well yeah but you know what’s funny? I downloaded the mod that lets me save parth and after killing alduin, I literally went straight for Delphine and esburn, killed them without a single thought, fuck those guys.
At the end of every playthrough, I always use vampiric grip on Delphine and carry her all the way to the Thalmor Embassy. I throw her over the wall and then I stop playing that character for good. This is my canon ending

Delphine honestly strikes me as somebody who is desperately struggling to remain relevant. If she doesn't want to die along with the entire world, then she HAS to help you. But just because she's friends with a historian who is ACTUALLY useful doesn't grant her any tangible AUTHORITY to swing around like she does. Like, she had no business at the peace talks. All she did was reveal her continued existence to her mortal enemies for no discernible purpose other than her own ego.
Notice how they're both conveniently placed near the edge of the montain when presenting you with that choice. Be a shame if someone would happen to raise their voice to remind them who's the boss around here. Edit : Just realised that's basically what the Paarthurnax dilemma mod does. Shining exemple of unanimous thought shared by the skyrim community, which is, don't f*ck with gramps Paarthurnax.
the best part of Delphine being an Essential NPC is that it allows you to wail on her ass as much as you want for daring to even consider killing Partysnax.
Delphine : In the name of the Blades of the Emperor. You're under arrest, Dovahkiin. Dragonborn : Are you threatening me, little girl ? Delphine : The blades will decide your fate. Dragonborn : I am the Blades. Delphine : Not yet. Dragonborn : It's treason, then... Fuuuuus....
That’s why I installed the mod to force her to accept my choice. You basically go “I’m the Dragonborn, your order serves ME,” and threaten to bring the temple down on her head.
I wonder if she realizes that this puts her at odds with the dragonborn? Her occupation as a dragon slayer is going to lead her to Paarthurnax, which means she’s going to have to fight the dragonborn eventually. Not like she’d ever get past the gray beards.
I remember that Esbern gives you a quest to achieve a very good passive effect against dragons, you can do that before you hit this dead end. What I mean is that you can also use and discard them just as they intend to do with you. You can literally leave them for the rest of the game waiting for news even if Alduin is alive or not, rotting in that musty temple.
It's so frustrating that there is no resolution to this quest unless you kill Paarthurnax, there is literally 0 reason for the Dragonborn to kill him after everything Paarthurnax has done for humanity. Yeah, he was a dragon and enslaved humanity like every other, but if not for him humanity wouldn't ever have won against the dragons.
I literally used the mod called “the parthanax dilemma” for my first play through cause I heard about the whole “killing parthanax thing” from the internet. I enjoy talking to him tbh.
I killed Paarthurnax exactly one time. And I immediately felt guilty. So I went back in time and blew Delphine off a mountain for making me choose between the Blades (as an Oblivion player, it hurt) and the Greybeards.
i like the blades in oblivion, but in skyrim they just suck. especially delphine, i don’t really have a problem with esbern, he just kinda stands around.
