Trent Hafdahl and Justin Lowe from After the Burial demo their eight-string riff-fest, "My Frailty," from In Dreams in this exclusive Guitar World video.
I saw these guys play one night. After their set, I jokingly heckled them that they couldn't shred all eight strings. I was sorely mistaken. These guys are amazing guitarists. A lot of people don't understand just how technical this stuff is. Listen to Pi (The Mercury God of Infinity) and tell me you could remember that picking pattern. And let alone the fact that they play flawlessly live, perfect unison. It's pretty impressive. Music isn't just notes, it's numbers too.
Hey Hank.. You know I’m just reminiscing on some Justin Lowe materials. But the reason I’m writing you is because I haven’t seen you on the usual channels I once used to see your witty comments on years ago. Just wondering if you’re okay? Lol
i fucking love the pineapple, these guys are awesome. Breath of fresh air to see people who are making kick ass music, who also have a sence of humor, why take everything so seriously!
saw them live back in early summer along with Winds of Plague and As I lay Dying, still can't believe I got the opportunity to see such an amazing show!
@MrCl1nt Yes, some of their songs are played on 8-string guitars. Aspiration. But you can CLEARLY see that some of their songs are played on 7-string guitars, like "My Frailty." It says at the very beginning of the video, "7-string tuning - Drop Ab."
Btw, if anyone else is wondering, the only decent tab on UG is wrong for Trents solo part where he does the rise up. Its tabbed as a 3 note sequence but it's actually a 4 note sequence with the pattern fret space fret fret space fret. Same roots tho.
"Trent Hafdahl and Justin Lowe from After the Burial demo their eight-string riff-fest, "My Frailty," from In Dreams in this exclusive Guitar World video." *ATB proceeds to play My Frailty using only 7 strings...* Nice GuitarWorld. Nice.
yeah I got to see then again live and talked to the guys the guitars are tuned like drop Ab/G# and the 8th string is an F. but the lowest note onthe bass is G# and he actually plays the same octave as the guitars when they use the bottum string just like Meshuggah.
Actually, he does that, from what I know, because, since he's tapping out those sweep patterns instead of picking them like Trent does, he's using his hand as a rest on the strings to make sure none of the notes ring out.
@paucceri its for ehrn your finger tapping it dosent affect the other strings so the string your tapping is the only string making the noise opposed to if you where to barely hit the other strings your not trying to hit/play it would distort the sound completely
This was totally awesome. I've been learning the song and this just MAJORLY helped with Trent's solo part. totally insane!!!! This song is so fucking heavy, its melodic, is low as balls, its fast, it shreds, and it grooves. and is djenty. i really cant think of a more satisfying piece of music. All the haters on here are between ages of 13-18 so their opinions are meaningless anyways. I'm 25 and I've spent 10+ years listening to various types, and After The Burial is the future of metal.
I don't know about you man but I've listened to after the burial since 2006 - 07 and I love every piece of music that they've made since then, this is not my favourite album but they haven't died. In fact if you watch the latest studio update you'd realize that it will be something like Rareform, which was a kick-ass album. PEACE
I can not, for the life of me, believe that this song suffers from a distinct lack of cowbell. this leads me to conclude MOOOOAAAAAR COOOOOOWWWWBEEEELLLL !!!!
@nephilymbass1 there's plenty of times where they use the low string. Your Troubles, cursing akhenaten, ometh, fractal effect, rareform, aspiration, viscious reforming of features.. all examples of songs that use the 8th string
@rhythmkeeper009 you can see they're playing through Axe-fx's so that's probably what's been used for everything. I don't know if you can record straight from them
Hey Justin, No homo but I dreamt the other night that I met you after one of your shows and I asked if y'all had plans to re-record Forging A Future Self and you said something along the lines of "Yeah we definitely do, it's gonna be in the works once we finish up this tour." I kid you not.
