Afternoon Tea Etiquette With Miss Sue Flay - Ever wondered about the correct way to eat a scone? Jam first or clotted cream first? How do you stir your tea properly?
Here are some fun top tips on afternoon tea etiquette - by etiquette rebel "Miss Sue Flay".
One of my very first afternoon tea videos (simply for FUN - before the hate mail arrives!)... No, high tea is not just at a high table, I am aware... it’s more of a full meal, with a cooked element and usually served later in the day... this video was edited (shocker!) and doesn’t include ALL information.
And no, I NEVER usually allow my dog to drink from my China, I AGREE, it’s not nice... but I was asked to for the purposes of this video and I’ll forever regret that choice, but please, no need for the nasty comments, I’m well aware of my human error. Eddy actually has his own Instagram account (@EddysLastYears) and is currently dying due to cancer, so any vile comments would be better kept to yourself, just please be kind... it would be most appreciated.
In fact, if you’re here for a truly serious lesson in etiquette, please go & search for a boring and stiff-upper lipped etiquette coach elsewhere (there’s plenty of those out there with silver spoons in places you wouldn’t want silver spoons!) - afternoon tea is supposed to be fun and my best advice is to enjoy HOWEVER you like, life’s too short to be told how to fold a napkin... seriously! Thanks so much for stopping by.

Important: NEVER stick out your finger either you hold a tea cup or a glass. You cannot apply in the XXIc. what was considered a good manner [and depicted in painting] if the XVIII and XIX cc (at least definitely in these cases) - your will be looked and perceived like a "parvenue" . It's considered bad manners for a long time now for the very reason: 'Nouveau riches' and 'parvenues' tried too hard to copy upper class and stuck out their pinkies too mach and at any opportunity. It became a signature of bad manners vary fast [even a satire]. So, talking about manners, watch your pinkie, keep it close to your other fingers. (A historian here :))

I'd have agreed with you if she knew what she was talking about. But since she was just making shit up, then no, America has enough con artists at its helm. It doesn't need any more in other areas of their lives.

I can assure you that you dont. Most of us in UK only have time for a cup of tea and a biscuit. Outside of the home it's almost impossible to get a good cup of tea here. I've had better tea in New York and Paris.

As soon as I saw the comic book style set, I knew I was in the right place. But as an American, I am slightly fascinated by the Conish vs. Devonshire cream debate. It's kinda like the North vs South iced tea debate: Most Northerners add sugar (if any at all) after the tea is cooled while Southerners add sugar while it's steeping making official Sweet Tea.

The Basics of Eating a Scone Properly Scoop out clotted cream and jams onto your plate, enough for one scone. Break apart a small bite-sized portion of scone with your hands or if using a knife, cut the scone horizontally. Use a knife to slather on cream and jam onto the broken-off piece of scone..... My mother would have left the table if I broke my scone in half and started taking bites out of it. That would be considered terribly rude and anything but lady like .... I’m quite sure that if you we’re privy to finishing school you would break apart your scone into delicate bite-size pieces as is appropriate in polite society.

The pinky thing came about because small porcelain cups have very small handles and made that way so you would only hold them in a dainty delicate way. this often meant that you could only use two or three fingers and hence the little finger.

It's important to note, that's it's called afternoon tea and not high tea being shown above. Many from North America seem to get the two mixed up. High tea is a more substantial meal (fish, meats, and the sort) served around dinner time. It is served at a "high table" (hence the name) and with high-backed chairs. Afternoon tea (as above) is between 3-5 pm, and is typically served on a lower table with lower chairs.. These days.. not always so anymore.

She got more things wrong than she got right. If she wants to break with tradition and do things her own way in her home, then bully for her. But she made a video called afternoon tea etiquette and then proceeded to leave out all the etiquette associated with afternoon tea. So many non-English are going to watch this and think this nonsense is actually true. You never EVER stick your pinky out (that's a huge faux pas) and high tea is tea served in the early evening late afternoon period which is a full meal. That's high tea, not just tea served on a high table. And that's just for starters. How can anyone teach etiquette when they can't even hold the cup correctly? She's no expert. Just someone looking for social media attention.

You clearly know nothing about etiquette firstly you fold the napkin in half and dab your mouth withe the inside so it doesn't go on your clothes or the floor! We also use the thumb and the index finger to pinch the cup then use the middle finger to hold I up. You only split the scone once which is in half !

Never ever smash your butler over the head with a confectionary tray, Always remember to break wind into a hanky in front of guests. Always smash every piece of bone china at the dinner table afterwards. Don't Gallop a horse into the dining Area high on cocaine. Don't say Fuck or Cunt. Never invite the poor or homeless or insensibly Fat to an English tea party. Don't wrestle a local Afghan hound to the ground and arrest it for Bicycle theft. Always leave the premises very angrily with racist disdain. Headbutt Partario Battersby Lillyhammer and Milly Trouther Longshank to thank them for their kind hospitality Always curtsy constantly and apologise constantly while bowing and grovelling constantly, whilst consistently constantly courting crows from Croatia. Never set fire to any beard or eyebrow. Always turn up 4 weeks late for a tea party to make sure you get their early enough. Always laugh at every comment. Never ever ever, never, ever, never ever point at a tea cloth or white napkins, but always wipe your genitals after bathroom breaks with a "red" napkin. I really hope this helps, or I will get very Angry.

Did you know , by any chance, that was brought into England by Princess Catarina de Braçança, daughter of His Magesty The King João IV of Portugal, when she married King Charles II of England, around 1660? The Princess introduced the habit of drinking tea at any time during the day as she was used to in Portugal while living with her parents The King and Queen Of Portugal, back in the 17 century. Much later , in the XIX century The 7ª Duchess of Bedford introduced the "five o'clock tea in London.

Dos: Drink Eat Enjoy Don't: Don't do things at expense of etiquette and other people As someone from England, you should only care whether you and your guests are enjoying your time. Stop wasting your time on etiquette, you're just drinking tea and eating cake and scones. It's an enjoyable event, don't make it hard and annoying for yourself

True, life is too short and etiquette rules may be cool but enjoying your life to the fullest the way you want is even cooler! One rule we should all follow: avoid toxic, full of negativity people and choose our friends wisely...

And how do you drink your tea? I was to slurp quietly so that you get all flavours of your tea, is that right?
@sueflay9922

Patti, making a sound is traditionally said to be rude, no slurping.... However I say do what you like - it's rude to point out people's bad habits, so just go for it!

Deeping anything in your tea is a no-no for three reasons: 1) we bring food to our mouths not the other way round, as the biscuit gets soggy there is a risk of it breaking or tea dripping midway. It looks disgusting and makes you look like a toddler. 2) you are depreciating the tea you are being served. It shows that either in your opinion it is a cheap tea that requires extra flavour, or you are unable to distinguish good from cheap and it is so that you don't mind tainting good tea with biscuit flavour, you might offend the host. 3) your cup will look a mess in the end. Some people might disinvite you in future just to avoid the tea deeping ritual.
