AFUL is a brand that although new to me has been around for four years , most of that time having been spent on research and development, thus making sure that their products are competent sound wise , but also competetive price wise.
To obtain these two goals they patented a number of technical abilities, that although not entirely new, have been used in a smart and efficient manner.
They are in no particular order:
EnvisionTEC High-Precision 3D Printed Acoustic Cavity Structure: Using high-quality 3D printing technology, AFUL Acoustics has designed a precise 3D printed acoustic tube structure for the Performer 5., Which helps maintain a proper phase correction between different frequencies.
RLC Network Frequency Division Correction Technology: In order to extract every bit of performance from the 5 drivers, the Performer 5 features in-house developed RLC Network Frequency Division Technology.
This allows the different drivers to have accurate frequency division but also corrects their non-ideal frequency response for certain frequency bands, resulting in a smooth frequency response.
High-Damping Air-Pressure Balance System: releases the air pressure inside the ear canal providing a comfortable listening experience.
As for the presentation we have a simple yet well executed package , that contains:
• six pairs of narrow bore tips that come in three sizes and two color variants. ( Tip rolling is a recommendation )
• 2-pin cable ( I used a 4.4mm cable as the stock is 3.5 )
• puck-style carrying case that is of decent quality although I opted for a different case due to the cable swap I did.
When we talk about fit and comfort the absence of any ear pressure and a perfect fit , all add up to a satisfying experience that makes for excellent listening sessions !
Finally onto sound and depending on your definition, you could call the P5 a bass boosted neutral or W-shaped.
There is a sub-bass focus on the P5, with a replay and tuning so good , we get all the necessary rumble but also the filling out of the accompanying mid bass and midrange replay.
Midbass is spot on, enough quickness and slam to match the subass well.
Even when tracks get busy in the low-end the quality of the DD used in the P5 is capable of handling such complexities in a commendable way , especially when you consider the price.
The mids on the P5 are the second star of the show, they are clean, everything getting an almost perfect balance and accuracy with regards to timbre, tonality and note weight , whilst still avoiding the bleed that sometimes occurs with sets that have the sort of low-end performance the P5 offers.
The treble is perhaps the one that surprised me the most , why you may ask , because it's got this correctness that draws you into it's replay.
It's always there in the right amount, no peaks, no sibilance, no over emphasis, just pure neutrality in the right amount.
Technically the P5 is a solid performer, soundstge and imaging are perhaps the two that for those looking for huge stage and pin point Imaging will not score full marks......everything is more intimate.
But detail retrieval , tonal correctness and sound coherency are for me full marks.
The comparisons to other IEM is always a delicate one, yes there are a number of examples which get totally trampled by the P5 , but there are also some very solid ones, the MANGIRD Tea2, Yanyin Cannon, Hisenior Mega 5P , Blessing 2 and AüR Audio Aure.
All of the above mentioned have areas where they shine, but at the end it's about which ones tick the most boxes for you.....for me I've done my ticking!!!
